Bert Blyleven got in partly because he was around for 100 years and partly because he put up very good #s every year, but as you said that is not a HOF'er

As far as Gossage and Dawson, Dawson deserves to be in IMO. Gossage it depends on how you feel about relievers being in

Alomar hung on for too long, but he deserves it except for that spitting on the ump incident

Bagwell the suspicion is there as you said and in this day and age that is good enough for him to be left out

I dont think Palmeiro deserves it either way. He was never the top 1B. Like Blyleven he was very good for many years, but does not deserve it

And McGuire is borderline even without the steroids issue

Blyleven's .534 career winning percentage is the number I have trouble with. That just screams "Pretty Good" to me.

I always felt that Gossage had some good years from about '78 to '82, then hung around for another "nothing spectacular" 10-12 years and when it was all done, his numbers didn't look too bad.

My bad on Dawson-- I meant to say "Jim Rice".

Forgot that Barry Larkin was eligible. I'm surprised he didn't get the nod, as well. Writers loved that guy, which makes it all the more surprising. I'm thinking he'll get in, eventually.

Baseball-reference has the official voting results:

EDIT: Tino Martinez got 6 votes :P

Palmiero's 3,000 hits/500 home run milestone was supposed to be his ticket in. Then he tested positive the same year he wagged his finger at congress. Then he played with ear plugs the rest of the season, because he couldn't take the heckling. Then he fell off the face of the earth until now.

In Blyleven's defense, he usually played for shit teams, so a "very good" win percentage can be forgiven. After all, Nolan Ryan's win/loss record was barely over .500 for his career, and he was arguably the most dominant pitcher of his time.

Edit Way to go Tino! You got more votes than... uh... Raul Mondesi! :P

Disagree on Goose being in, and not Lee Smith. Neither screams Hall of Famer, but I always thought Lee's career was a bit better overall than Gooses, but they both played well before my time, so maybe the media liked Goose? I don't know.

In a bit of information only I care about, the Rays will not bring back Kevin Kennedy to work in the broadcast booth, after two seasons of miserable game calling with Dewayne Staats. Instead, Brian Anderson (former pitcher with the Angels, D'Backs, Royals... etc.) is taking over full-time after doing spot duty last season during non-west coast road trips.

I must say, the quality of broadcasters helps games, and Kennedy SUCKED. I really wish Joe Magrane would come back, but I guess his deal with MLB Network is too sweet.

Trevor Hoffman is calling it a career with 601 saves. Was it because he felt he couldn't do it anymore, or because no one was willing to give him a serious contract offer?

Probably because no one was going to give him a good offer

Padres hired him for an unspecified front office role which I'm sure made the retirement easier for him

That's surprising, considering how well Hoffman's departure from San Diego as a free agent went.

The Rays sign Kyle Farnsworth to shore up the bullpen a little bit. If I recall Farnsworth(less) from his Yankee stint, you can guess my opinon of him based on what I just reffered to him as.

From what I read on mlb.com, Hoffman basically says that was over and done with and he was not mad at the Padres not re-signing him two years ago

Took a business is business approach

Still has a home in San Diego

Yankees signed Rafael Soriano
$35 million for 3 years to set up Mariano Rivera

So the MLB leader in saves last year is now a set up guy.

Only on the Yankees. And that is why they are consistently in the Top 5 teams, because they are willing to spend money to field the best team

Salary Cap.

That's just total shit, that no one can sign Soriano for a closer role, when a lot of teams need it, because the Yankees drove a truck full of money up to his house to be Mariano's set up man and can afford to field a team for $250 mi. a year.

Y'know, it might be a good deal for the future. Rivera's signed for two more years, so I could see where Soriano sets up for two years and becomes the closer in year three. Very similar to the way Rivera became, well, Rivera. Didn't he set up for John Wetteland for two years before becoming the closer?

And they still have Boone Logan.

Rivera set up in 1996 fo Wetteland but in 95, he was kind of all over the place. He spent half the season as a mediocre (at best) starter then did whatever in the bullpen.

I just now found out that ESPN will no longer feature Jon Miller and Joe Morgan for Sunday Night Baseball. After 20 years, why the change?

The problem is alot of the owners don't want to put money into their teams
So why bother buying the team to begin with

i realize some teams owners lose money over the years from their other businesses and have to cut back.

But with revenue sharing and TV sharing and luxury tax, the Yankees pay alot of money to other teams

So no salary cap. Yankees are playing within the rules
