Y'know, it might be a good deal for the future. Rivera's signed for two more years, so I could see where Soriano sets up for two years and becomes the closer in year three. Very similar to the way Rivera became, well, Rivera. Didn't he set up for John Wetteland for two years before becoming the closer?

And they still have Boone Logan.

I have to disagree here

Difference is Rivera was a relatively unknown player when he was the set up guy in 96

Soriano was the closer with the most saves this year, so he is a proven closer

Rules that create the most unfair balance in any major sport. If the Yankees were restricted to, say, a 110 mil. payroll, there's no way they would be able to field potential all-stars at every position every year, and maybe some other teams that have a hard time fielding a major league caliber team to begin with can feel like they have a shot again if they spend a little cash.

The Royals have to be the best example of this in the AL in recent years. When they spend money, it's on players a team like the Yankees would call back of the rotation starters or bench options. If they could seriously have a chance at a Texiera or a Soriano or even keep a Greinke, then maybe they wouldn't be in such a horrible stretch of non-glory.

Kinda' splitting hairs, here. The point is: (if all goes well) Soriano will probably take over from Rivera in 2013.

The salary cap issue is strange. The Pirates are making money, but if they start investing in their on-field product, then ownership would start to lose money. I'm always curious just how much money the Yankees, Cubs and Red Sox kick down to teams like the Pirates and Royals. I've heard Yankees fans holler: "hey, we're supportin' all a' youse losers". That's kinda' hard to dissect.

Found this book titled: "Pine-Tarred and Feathered" at a new store called "2 Bucks Books". It's written by an SI baseball writer as a daily diary of the 1983 season. Think of it as an old school blog. He starts in January 1983 while covering a Dolphins-Patriots playoff game. So far it's rather enjoyable-- somewhat similar to Jim Bouton's "Ball Four", minus cursing and "expose'" stuff.

It beat out a Thurman Munson biography on my "What Should I Buy" list. I'm really not too keen on one-athlete biographies, since it's usually a 300 page blow-job of said athlete. For instance, as much as I like and admire Roberto Clemente, I found his last biography to be rather uninspiring.

Also found the first-ever Colorado Rockies program for 2 bucks at the same store. I never had a chance to buy that one, even though those things were available for YEARS at grocery stores all over town. I think I had a bug up my ass about the Rockies until Coors Field opened in their third year. Cover price was 5 bucks, so I waited almost 18 years and saved 3 bucks!

Gil Meche decides to call it a career. Not an elite player, but how many times can you say someone walked away from guaranteed money by having major surgery that would end their season and possibly ruin their chances of being an effective player again?

Rays sign Damon and Manny. Because THAT will make up for Carl Crawford

Damon might be a good veteran presence, like a Cliff Floyd was in 2008... but MANNY?!!? WHY!?!?!!?!? He doesn't have it anymore, and as much as the Rays have sucked in the past and I've defended almost everything, the one thing that is unforgiveable is a lack of hustle.

Same reason I hate B.J. Upton.

In a perfect world, Manny disappears after two weeks of Spring Training to go compete in a Brazilian Checkers Tournament (or something equally stupid), Damon sticks around as 4th or 5th outfielder and Rocco Baldelli starts.

I thought Rocco retired, again. Or if not that, isn't with the Rays anymore.

I don't think he's officially retired... but in a perfect world he'd come back from the injury bug and make the roster in 2011.

You're right, he currently a free agent. Like to see him come back, but it's doubtful.

I love Rocco, but it just seems like his body won't let him. He played half a playoff game and was removed from the ALDS roster with some sort of muscle fatigue, and he only played maybe 10 games before that, most in short spurts.

Rocco was compared to Dimaggio by some scout when he was drafted, but it's more like Gehrig now. I just want to see him play every day at a level that won't embarrass him. He has, or had, the talent to be a major leaguer for years, maybe even an All-Star on a regular basis.

I read about that. I don't know what surprised me more that the Royals were dumb enough to be paying Gil Meche $12.5 million this year, or that he retired without sitting out the year with the injury

Props to Meche though, 99.99% of MLB players would not do that

Small market teams have to pay elite player money to attract border-line all-stars and high ranking role players and back of the rotation starters. It's hard to attract the MVP's of the baseball world to places where winning rarely happens, fan support is low, and the market isn't large enough to support payrolls that would compete with the Sawx, Yanks, Mets etc.

As much as the large markets are guilty of over-spending, small market teams over-spending on lesser quality players doesn't help either.

I realize and understand everything you just said, but I was still stunned that Gil Meche was making that much money

It's one thing to overpay Jayson Werth as much as he is getting from the Nationals. But Gil Meche?

I'm sure there had to bea thin market that year. I can't explain otherwise. He was a good pitcher, but not an ace/13 mil a year guy.
