When it comes to starting pitching, there is a thin market almost every year. There is not enough decent starting pitching to go around the major leagues. 5 starting pitchers per team X 30 teams = 150 starting pitchers Factor in the inevitable average of one major injury per team for the rotation = another 30 starting pitchers So that is 180 starting pitchers needed. I don't know how many MLB starters are decent, but no way is it near 180 |

Rocco Baldelli formally announced his retirement and will work with the Rays in some invented position in scouting. I've mentioned it before, but when Rocco made his return in 2010 and hit a home run in his first game back, I couldn't help but get the indrescribable feeling running down my spine. It wasn't like the home run meant anything (it cut a lead down in a worthless game with Baltimore), but it was special for other reasons. |

I was just going to post something about Rocco's retirement. Looks like he has one of those enigmatic "Friends of the Team" jobs. Along the Gil Meche lines (at least in salary), the Astros re-upped with Wandy Rodriguez at $34mil for 3 years. |

It's funny how 5-6 years ago I knew the Astros roster backwards and forwards and now can't name 5 players in their 40 man roster. |

Andy Pettitte finally settled on retirement. So... Hall of Famer or not? I think yes, but not on a first or second year ballot. 240 career wins in 16 seasons, 19 post-season wins ("most" all time in expanded era), 5 world series rings (and 8 world series appearances), and a pair of 20-win seasons seems to be pretty nice numbers. Of course, the most glaring negative was the steroid admitance. |

I agree that he'll be an eventual Hall of Famer. Once Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Randy Johnson go in, there won't be any more slam-dunk 300 game winners left. I think a good barometer for Pettitte's HOF credentials will be Mike Mussina in the next few years. If Moose gets a good percentage of votes, then that will bode well for Pettitte's chances. He'll get a lot of backlash from the steroid issue, plus the usual anti-NYY stance. I can hear the case against him: "he wouldn't have won that many games on another-team-not-named-Yankees". But you can counter with the fact he had a good year in Houston (albeit hitched to Roger Clemens' steroid-tainted coattails). |

Pettitte's post-season credentials will be held more favorably over Mussina's of course, but other than that, I was thinking of Moose as a possible test of the waters for someone who doesn't have"guaranteed induction" numbers. Moose should get in, but it won't be for a while if he does. |

That's not the worst money spent. Vlad proved he could still hit last year, so if the numbers carried over with minimal decrease in production, $8 mil. isn't bad for a middle of the order power threat. |

I'm hoping he can still go. If only the O's had signed him back in '04. Well, maybe they'll be good enough to get a winning record, or 3rd place. |

The O's might be one of those surprise teams in 2011. They have good young talent, some decent veterans, decent bullpen. Starting pitching is always up in the air with them, though. |

I agree. If he gets at least 20 homers and 70 RBI, that's money well spent in this day n' age. |

FWIW, ESPN (3, I think) is airing the Caribbean Series online this year. It's all broadcast in Spanish, though. I thought it was interesting that the standings showed the team names instead of the country (ex: Dominican Republic is "Toros" and Puerto Rico is "Criollos"). Listing the countries is probably something they do for us Dumb Yanks when it's shown in English. Oh, and it's also hosted by a potential (Professional) Baseballer of Lesser Note: Candy Maldonado.
