Andy Pettitte finally settled on retirement.

So... Hall of Famer or not? I think yes, but not on a first or second year ballot. 240 career wins in 16 seasons, 19 post-season wins ("most" all time in expanded era), 5 world series rings (and 8 world series appearances), and a pair of 20-win seasons seems to be pretty nice numbers.

Of course, the most glaring negative was the steroid admitance.

He was a borderline HOFer before, but admitting to steroids = no way he gets in

And I am a diehard Yankees fan, so I do like Pettite

That seems to be the nail in his coffin, but the one thing he has going for him there is a confession from the second he was named instead of hiding behind lawyers, denying it, or faking not understanding english.

Heard Those Three Little Words on Valentine's Day: Pitchers/Catchers Report. It's been 68 degrees and sunny the past two days and I'm ready for another year. Thinking about going to Cincinnati for Opening Day on Mar 31.

BTW, we'll start the "OAO MLB 2011 Season Thread" on Opening Day. Everyting until then; including Spring Training; is still technically the off-season.

Anyways, I'm still slowly reading Jim Kaplan's "Pine-Tarred and Feathered". Basically a blog about the 1983 season. There's some really interesting stuff here-- like the boner he gets from covering the White Sox rookie duo of Ron Kittle and Greg Walker. Or how Buddy Bell should be in the same sentence as Mike Schmidt.

He writes a story on Red Sox reliver Bob Stanley and how, as a middle reliever, he gets lost in the shuffle. To land more acclaim for middle relievers, Kaplan works with a guy at the Elias Sports Bureau and comes up with 7 "new" parameters for measuring relievers. Including the "hold". I'm not a fan of that stat, but it makes sense that a writer would have started it. I got the sense that writers loved interviewing some guys and want a stat to give him some cred and justify WHY they're writing about him.

Cincy on opening day is a blast. A blast of cold, but a blast nonetheless. I highly recommend it

Hell, I was at Opening Day Blizzards in '94 and '95.

I see they have a parade at 11am and some Opening Day hoopla at the ballpark, but are there any events I should be aware of? Anything the night before, or after?

Jim Edmonds is calling it a career, too. Since I'm not as much of a National League follower as I am A.L., I don't have a ton of fond memories and sadness for it, but I know enough of what he's done to know he was a pretty good player for St. Louis, as well as Anahiem, but after that... he just kind of hung around. I've seen his diving catch into centerfield enough in various replays and clip shows to not need to see it again.

Wow, the Yankees roster is pathetic this year. Who would've thought that 2 years ago when they splurged on all of those players that they team would be such a mess so quickly.

Check out the virtual seating chart for the Marlins new 2012 ballpark:

Click on any seat and it takes you to a virtual view. Complete with the ol' VRML look-around functions.

The roster is not pathetic, way too harsh IMO

Royals, Pirates, Nationals teams like that have a pathetic roster

The starting rotation I agree is bad, but they still have a very good if not great lineup and on paper a very good and deep bullpen

A payroll of $200 mil. should equal best team in baseball. The outfield is pretty darn average, their catcher(s) are unproven and/or lost "it", and their starting pitching after CC and Hughes is crap.

The Yanks seriously might be battling with Tampa for 2nd/3rd, because Boston isn't losing this year. Even Toronto and Baltimore could be much better this year, too. Good as in a .500 team, not division winner, that is.

Not that I'm aware of, but I've been out of town for around 7 years. I recommend trying some Gold Star Chili to remind you why you like real Chili, some LaRosa's pizza (which you can have delivered to your seat in the ballpark), and some Montgomery Inn Ribs. (Actually, the only palatable thing to me in that list is the pizza. I've never liked Cincy Chili or Montgomery Inn. But Bob Hope and Pete Rose liked Montgomery Inn, so it's sacred in the Queen City. I'll also add that I'm vegetarian, and haven't tasted the ribs or the chili in around 12 years.)

EDIT: My Dad says you have to have a Big Red Smokey to make it a real ball game in Cincinnati

Boston on paper has the best team in the AL East, but that doesn't mean shit until the games start

The thing is the only top player gone from the Yankees is the retirement of Andy Pettite. Most people expected the Yankees to sign Cliff Lee, but he wasn't on the team last year, so it's only Pettite gone

Russell Martin as catcher is not unproven, so not sure what you are talking about there. Posada should have been the DH 2 years ago.

I lean more to Scrooge's side than not. Two of the three big money infielders are creeping towards late thirties/forties. The only outfielder with a name is in the same spot, as well as several pitchers.

It's not that the Yankees don't have a good team per se, it's just that it's not a team that will last for more than another 5 years. Then all the anchors will be done and they'll be starting over again.

Of course, Hank Steinbrenner promises to be the most paying owner in baseball, so we really don't know how that will work out, do we?

Martin isn't unproven, he's lost his touch, thats why the Dodgers let him go. Maybe he can recapture his all-star status of playing ability, but he's been medicore or worse and injury prone the last two seasons.
