Hallo there, and welcome to the eighth installment of (Professional) Baseballers of Lesser Note. In which we spotlight some of the distinguished gentlemen who have partaken in the professional gentleman's sport of baseball throughout the various eras encompassing the aforementioned sport.

This week we look at Mike Marshall

What'd He do?
Career stat totals:
911 Seasons / 1035 games/ .270 BA / 148 HR / 530 RBI

What Can You Tell Us About Him?
Mike Marshall had a traditional path to the majors. Drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers, he rose through their minor league system and, after crushing the ball for the Triple A Albuquerque Dukes, he debuted with the playoff-bound Dodgers at the end of the 1981 season. Sharing time at RF with Reggie Smith, he even made an appearance in the NLDS (in a year when baseball had expanded playoffs due to a strike).

Coincidentally, Marshall's career with the Dodgers began the same season as another Dodgers named Mike Marshall (a pitcher) ended his LA career.

What Happened to Him?
Marshall soon took over as the Dodgers' primary RF and occasional first baseman, putting up decent numbers throughout the 80's. But he seemed to have a yo-yo syndrome, where he was injured one year and healthy the next. At his peak, Marshall made his lone All-Star Game appearance in 1984, then followed it up in 1985 by hitting .293 with 28 homers and 93 RBIs. Back in the day when hitting more than 25 homers was considered newsworthy. It certainly was, as Marshall finished 14th in the MVP voting that year.

While he never finished on MVP ballots again, Marshall continued to have productive years for the 80's Dodgers. In fact, on the Dodgers' World Series-winning '88 squad, Marshall actually led the team in RBIs with 82; even besting fellow teammate and eventual NL MVP Kirk Gibson. During the '88 playoffs Marshall batted about .230, but did hit a key 3-run homer that sparked a 6-0 World Series Game 2 win for the Dodgers.

After the 1989 season, Marshall was dealt to the Mets in a package deal for Juan Samuel. Marshall was an initial part of a pretty good 1990 Mets team, but soon faded and was expendable by mid-season. The Mets were loaded at both OF and 1B, so Marshall was dealt to the Red Sox in a deadline deal. One of the annual "ummm...we're contending, we should trade for SOMEONE deals" that Boston seemed to do. Marshall had serviceable games for the Sox, but with his skills eroding, he was released mid-way through the '91 season. He finished his career with the ol' Cup of Coffee for the California Angels. Not a bad career at all.

But there is one amazing statistic that Marshall was also known for. At one point during his Dodgers days, he was linked with Belinda Carlisle. In all of her post-Go-Go's, mid-80's hotness.

Play in the Majors, win a World Series and get to bang Belinda Carlisle. I stand corrected: I shouldn't say "not a bad career at all". I should say "that's a pretty damn good career"! We salute, you, Mike Marshall.

Belinda was/is gorgeous. She looked a little baby-fattish in her Go-go's days, but she always had a cute face. She filled out nicely once she went solo.

She didn't really play up her sex appeal, though (aside from a few random instances, like when she showed off her rack for five seconds in "I Get Weak"). Which kinda' made her more desirable in my book. Compared to someone like Madonna who was shaking her hips in a psuedo strip-club video. Belinda had that "Elizabeth hotness", if that makes sense.

madonna though had alot of musical talent

Belinda was talented also

As far as the stripper look for that time period, I would say Samantha Fox

I though she was super hot back then (I was in college when she started), but she had zero singing ability. But damn what a body

I find it funny that some people thought she was the same girl as the porn star Samantha Fox. That one had to be 10 years older (and I had never heard of her until the singer came along)

Yow. Samantha Fox. I was in middle school when she first appeared and thought she was super hot, as well. But holy crap was her singing terrible.

All the little boys in my school liked her. The guys who had a locker next to us had a huge poster of her hanging inside their door. We used to pester them to open their locker, so we could gawk at it. Pretty famous poster; I'm sure you can find it, or know what I'm talking about; it was a collage of her in different outfits. The main pic had her in some white top and standing in a pool with her juggs hanging out.

I guess she's the closest thing my little generation had for their "pinup queen". If you were born from 74 to 78, you probably did one of your first spank jobs to Samantha Fox.

i just goggled her and Touch Me came out in Fall of 86, so I had just started college.

For some reason I thought it was 88, but like we both said it's not like she was famous for her singing talents.

I do remember the pic of her on the Touch me single, the record would slip right into the crack of her ass and the ass was in the shortest jean shorts.

I was born in 1969, so i don't fit your 1974-1978 timeframe, but I am sure it is true.
