With four games to go, the Pirates are now guaranteed to reach the All-Star break sitting at .500 or better. FWIW, they're only 1.5 games out and in second place in the Central. Enjoy it while it lasts, because starting on the 18th they have two weeks of Reds, Cardinals, Braves and Phillies. If they reach August 1st at or above .500, then things get exciting. |

Jeter finally got #3000, a home run off David Price in the 3rd. Went 5 for 5 for the day, and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 8th. I'd say he had a great day. Way to go Jeter. #2! Jeter! |

The Pittsburgh Pirates are playing a saturday night primetime game on FOX against a team with a worse record than them. Edit: Nevermind, it's WGN. I just woke up and got my channels confused. Still, Pirates have a winning record! |

I am not as big a Jeter fan as most Yankees fans. Yesterday was impressive But now he should be dropped to 6th or 7th in the order for the good of the team |

Weird deal with the Mets trading K-Rod to the Brewers. If he finishes less than 55 games this season, his contract can be bought-out for $3.5mil. He has 34 games finished, already. With John Axford also closing for the Brewers and the team saying they'll use BOTH guys in the role, they'll probably be counting "games finished" for K-Rod. Just a strange situation that a contending team gets a player in the second half for the stretch run, but can only use him so much. |

I never liked the idea of getting a closer, when you've already established a closer, and now are telling them to share duties. I've never been a fan of this, ever. I'm sure it's more successful than, say, platooning three guys in one position and all three are career .250 hitters with light power and average OBP, but in this case, K-Rod is a personality, and he might not be a good fit for a clubhouse with a guy like Greinke running around. |

I agree and that also certainly lessened what the Mets got in the return for him |

They didn't need him tonight. Went to the Rockies-Brewers game and the Rox pounded them 12-3. The latest line-up shuffling has Ryan Spilborghs hitting leadoff and Ty Wigginton in LF. They're also trying Ian Stewart at 3B, again. I think this was Wigginton's first game in LF this year. He was all nervous and kept fidgeting with his glove, walking around, stretching, adjusting his belt, etc. |

Went to last night's game, as well. Mark Kotsay replaced Ryan Braun in LF around the 5th and while I've never felt one way or another about him before, I think he's kind of a douche, now. Whenever an opposing batter strikes out, he swings his left arm in a hooking "got 'em" move. Even if it's the opposing pitcher. I'm sorry, but I never knew Mark Kotsay was out there striking out batters. Being right on the fence, we started heckling him about it. We were telling him to keep that left arm lose, take an extra bullpen session, etc. He made the "blah blah" motion telling us to shut up, as the inning came to an apparent end. But Prince Fielder bobbled the ball for an error and the inning continued. He came back all frustrated. We got on him, saying: "oohh! What's the arm motion for an error?! Use your right? Wiggle your leg?!" So he goes in for his at-bat the next inning... hits a fly ball out to our side. He comes back for the bottom half and we say: "your fly ball missed us, Hercules. Nice try, though. Maybe it that LEFT ARM wasn't worn out....". |

Awesome story. The things you see and hear about that the camera misses. I didn't know Kotsay was still in the majors. |

It is Tuesday, July 19, 2011 and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in first place. Columnists are picking up on this; as they should. But it'd be nice if they did some research. Example, on SI columnist mentioned that the Pittsburgh offense has no punch, aside from Andrew McCutchen. Which completely discounts the contributions from Neil Walker who's batted clean-up most of the year. With the team contending I hope they don't do something ridiculous like the last two times they were in this positon. In 1997 they went out and got... Shawon Dunston. In 1999 they went out and got... Joe Oliver (for Jose Guillen, no less). |

I'm not giving up hope for the Rays, but this season is starting to come crashing back to reality, that 2011 was going to be the year of rebuilding rather than serious contending. It's not just being 6 games back of the Wild Card spot, currently owned by the Yankees, just a lot of little things. 1. Lack of offense. While the Rays can score runs a plenty, it's more often they don't, and in the AL East, you're NOT winning games 2-1 every night. It's just not possible. 2. Lack of power. B.J. Upton is leading the team with 15 HR's, and his AVG. is below .240. Longoria has been fighting hip, oblique, and foot problems all season, and the only other power souces are Matt Joyce and Ben Zobrist, who are very streaky in that department. 3. The bullpen, while fine, lacks definiable roles still and knowing your place is important to relief pitchers. I still have trouble naming the players, but only the closer, Kyle Farnsworth, has a defined role. Everyone else just kind of pitches whenever, and that's not good. And SEND J.P. HOWELL TO TRIPLE A! He needs to work on his mechanics ever since the shoulder surgery. Suddenly thrusting him into important games with only a handful of minors appearances just doesn't seem Joe Maddon-like. 4. Too little veteran presence and too many rookies. Johnny Damon seems like a swell guy, but the club suffered early with Manny Being Manny, and Kyle Farnsworth never comes across as Mr. Friendly (see also: Troy Percival). The Rays 25-man roster is filled with inexperience and role players rather than definiable talent. I like Sean Rodriguez, Elliot Johnson, and Reid Brignac, but NONE of them are doing anything offensively, and on defense have been quite unreliable at times too. That's just the middle infield. There's more, from the outfield to the rotation and the bullpen. And stop blaming the lack of sell out crowds for underperforming. There have been other teams with underwhelming attendance that can still win games. As a Rays fan, your stadium is a LOOOONG trip for me. It's not about being a dome, it's about poor location. I would have a hard time justifying traveling 95 miles one way to see the fucking Rays on a regular basis. One of the few surprises is Casey Kotchman resurrecting his career, but will he stick around into 2012? Is Kotchman worth any significant time and money to invest into? He's a light hitting first basemen, but has a nice glove. I miss Carlos Pena, even if his avg. was 100 points lower, yet his production was still pretty good. |

Unhappy owner = Uh-oh. Read that the Rays owner is openly getting sick of the Rays and St. Pete. A guy obsessed with the stock market and making money, I'm surprised he hasn't completelt gutted the team of players making more than a million dollars to try and save a few bucks. I guess when Upton and Shields are traded, it won't be a surprise, unless he decides to unload some other "contracts" too. |

Saw the Cubs vs. Astros at Wrigley Saturday. I had seats 8 rows from the Cubs bullpen mound. Great seats, hot day. The ballpark does have an awesome vibe, especially with the rooftop seats on the buildings across the street. As a Reds fan, I've heard rumors about Douchebag Cubs fans, and I dismissed them the same way I dismiss the idea from Red Sox fans that all Yankees fans are inherently douchey (don't worry Scrooge, you're still a douche to me). I have to say, though, that Cubs fams, or at least some of them, are indeed Douches. That, or I just happened into a Douchebag section. Fans were heckling the Cubs pitchers as they warmed up, talking about themselves incessantly and loudly as if Wrigley was a giant outdoors singles bar, and they even heckled the beer guy for being sweaty on a 90 degree day. On a positive note, my usher was awesomely nice and the game was fun. Don't expect me to call Wrigley friendly, though |
