You would really think that the Mets would've learned from the Beltran thing. But nope, they went and paid Jason Bay a shitload of money and he immediately started to suck. Good old Mets, won't they ever win. |

The Mets are a team dedicated to losing and screwing up. The signing of Bay seems to look worse every day. He was better off staying in Boston, or going somewhere that didn't have a stadium that sucked for everyone sans Jose Reyes. K-Rod was a terrible signing, just for the horrible media coverage last year for him beating the crap out of his father-in-law, and Carlos Beltran's met career is summed up by looking at Strike 3 to end the NLCS in 2006. |

The Beltran signing did not turn out that bad He had 5 1/2 good, very good or great seasons out of 7 The other 1 1/2 seasons he was injured But his Met tenure will mostly be remembered by his taking a called Strike 3 against the Cardinals in the NLCS of 2006 That and the Walter Reed trip flap of 2010 And Beltran was the hottest free agent at the end of 2005 because of his play in the 2005 playoffs. Bay was a need for the Mets at the time, but wow he has fallen pretty far pretty fast |

No kidding. I remember watching that game while exercising in my basement. I said: "okay, Beltran: let's see what you can do. This is your chance to Be Somebody" (to paraphrase Navin R. Johnson). Then the pitch lobbed right in there and the game was over. Mets overpaying for a buncha' name players, then sucking? Bobby Bonilla, Bret Saberhagen and Eddie Murray have NO idea what you're talking about. |

Aren't they overpaying Bobby Bonilla now, too? What brain-dead moron negotiated THAT contract? Steve Phillips? |

The Cubs ship Kosuke Fukudome off to Cleveland for a couple of prospects. It seems weird for Cleveland to bring someone in, but the Cubs are paying most of the remainder of his 2011 salary, so it doesn't cost them much. Fukudome is another in the line of Japanese signings that really didn't lead to much. I know he wasn't going to be the next Ichiro or even Hideki Matsui, but thought he'd be a little bit more than "just another guy in the lineup." |

Chien-Ming Wang is making his first start in two years against the Mets, and had a pretty crappy first inning, but welcome back. It's nice to see someone battle back from injuries, and missing almost two full seasons worth of playing time. In other news... the Diamondbacks recently had Wily Mo Pena and Sean Burroughs in their lineup. Pena hadn't seen ML action in about three seasons, and Burroughs in FIVE, last with the Devil Rays, to start the '06 season (I think we traded Dewon Brazelton to San Diego for him. Two flop first round picks). That last one seems like an eternity between major league appearances. |

I think it was a good move for Cleveland. He seems like a solid fielder and it gives them some needed depth. |

Not a bad move at all, just a commentary on the media hype for foreign stars. It's a recipe for disaster, putting so much focus on someone to perform at nothing less than the highest expectactions. The Phillies continue to be the Yankees of the NL, trading for Hunter Pence. I don't know what the Astros long-term plans are... they don't have much on their ML roster, they don't have much in terms of top prospects in the minors... it's a disappointment after years and years of teams lead by the Killer B's. |

Cleveland picks up Ubaldo Jimenez. I would say they're going for it this year, but I don't see anyone other than Boston vs. Texas in the ALCS. The Yankees also have an outside chance of course, but that's my official prediction right now. |

Pittsburgh brings in Ryan Ludwick and Derrek Lee. Both are upgrades for the team. What's sad is that supposedly they called other teams about other players, but guys wouldn't waive their no-trade clauses to go to Pittsburgh. Media reports say this is the first time the Bucs have tried to improve their lineup at the deadline since 1992 when they brought in (choke) Danny Jackson. Not correct, as they brought in Shawon Dunston in 1997 (and the panicky Joe Oliver deal in '99). They just finished up their rough schedule stretch by getting swept by the Phillies. They still ended up with a 5-8 record through, so it wasn't a complete disaster. They have 13 games against St. Louis and Milwaukee (plus three against the Reds) in August, which will make or break their chances in the NL Central. Obviously, I'd like to see them make the playoffs, but they have a very good chance to finish above .500, which seemed like an insurmountable goal back in March. |

I know it's a few days late, but I'm stunned the Rays not only didn't trade Upton or Damon, but made no moves at all... unless you really count sending Felipe Lopez from Durham to Milwaukee for a few hundred dollars. Oh, and way to go A-Rod. add (possibly) being suspended for gambling to your career resume of dickitude. I guess no one told him the dangers of mixing gambling with a major league baseball career. Oh, hi Pete Rose. I'm not trying to be a major ass here, but I'm starting to think Barry Bonds is a better person to emulate than A-Rod. |

As a player, you could pull out a shotgun at home plate and shoot the pitcher...and still get lighter treatment from the league than you would for GAMBLING. That's the Cardinal Sin of MLB . While it's rumored that other "celebrities" were allegedly involved in the same gambling circuit, I doubt their image would suffer as much as A-Rod's (or any MLB player's) would. |

I honestly couldn't care less if Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were in on these poker games, especially when a professional athlete is involved, and the history the sport has with handling gambling. It may just be "poker", but it makes the sport look bad, especially since A-Rod has a history of these underground games. |
