I short-changed Tex's worth in my little rant. His glove is top notch and his power numbers are consistant, it's just hard watching someone who can hit so well with an average struggling to stay near .250. |

In a WTF Moment, I was surprised to see that the Rockies signed and started Kevin Millwood, last night. I'm guessing he's there to eat innings for the rest of the season and until they get a gauge on the 3 pitchers they got for Ubaldo Jimenez. There's nobody else in the system who's ready to start...so here's Millwood. They've had some weird journeyman "inning eating" starters over the years; guys like Livan Hernandez, Scott Elarton, Jeff Fassero and Rodrigo Lopez. |

The Tigers pick up Delmon Young from Minnesota, the only notable waiver move so far. I haven't followed Young much since his days in Tampa, but he still carries that arrogance when talking to the media. I remember Todd Kalas doing a pre-show bit with him before a game against Minnesota, and he just has an awful attitude, still, 6 years into his major league career. |

Saw a weird stat that the Giants hit something like 8 homeruns in a row; all of them solo homers. Supposedly, it was the first time since the deadball era of 1914 since that had happened to a team. |

Jim Thome hits #600, and it's a shame more people haven't paid as much attention to it as Jeter's countdown to 3,000 hits this season. I guess that's what happens when you play for a low-key team and are one of the few big names NOT to be tainted by the youknowwhat era. |

I remember when he hit 500, I thought: "I didn't know he had that many. Wow". Fun and interesting trivia question (potentially easy): Thome hit NO homeruns for one of his teams. Which one? I'm looking it up, but I think he's the only 600 homer guy with that weird designation. EDIT: yup, he certainly is. Griffey hit 3 with the White Sox and Willie Mays hit 14 with the Mets. So re-work the question and you can now ask: who is the only 600 HR guy who hit no homeruns for one of his MLB teams? |

I don't think Thome had any for the Los Angeles Dodgers... of California. :P |

Until today, I'd completely forgotten Thome was a Dodger at one time. I thought he would've retired at the end of that season (2009), but he came back and had two more solid years with the Twins. Obviously, his HOF plaque will have "Dodgers" listed, but I'll be surprised if the Dodgers lay any claim to him when he's inducted. For instance, I remember the Twins promoting Dave Winfield's induction in 2000-2001, but Winfield actually had some decent years for them. Despite the fact that "Twins" isn't a team you think of when say "Dave Winfield". |

It's a real shame Roberto Alomar never played a regular season game with Tampa Bay. Now THAT would've been an awesome "he played for THEM?!" moment. |

Funny and random thing-- ran across a Mike Mussina baseball card. On the back, it has his full name of "Michael Cole Mussina". |

The Pirates came up in conversation, last night. An interesting thing about MLB is that they don't have the pussy "last place schedule" stuff like the NFL does. If they did, the Pirates would've made the postseason once or twice in the last 15 years. Without looking up specifics, I can recall a few times where NFL teams had strong rebound years after going anywhere from 4-12 to 8-8. I remember the Donkeys benefiting from this a few times (1991 especially). I'm torn on whether or not this benefits MLB. In one way, it makes it more relevant when teams do contend. People complain about the Yankees dominating the AL East since the late 90's... but they often forget that the Yankees sucked for about 10 years, before that. But it definitely hurts a team like Pittsburgh or Kansas City when they go through these awful sub-.500 dry spells (although for Pittsburgh it's not a "spell", more an Era). |

The Yankees also dominated the AL East when it was at it's weakest. The Red Sox were a mid 80's win total team for most of that stretch, the Blue Jays were around the same with mediocrity, the Orioles fell hard after 97, and the Expansion Rays need no explanation. It still take s agreat team to win 4 World Series' in 5 years, and make it 5 out of 6, but it didn't hurt beating up on those teams all year long. |
