Twins place Thome on waivers. Hopefully he goes somewhere to win that World Series he wants. |

Which brings up the question: had he not been chasing 600, would the Twins have released him sooner? |

Hard to say... they've been horribly underperforming as a whole. I mentioned this a few days ago (I think), that the Twins were playing the Yankees with what looked like their Triple A roster, so he wasn't holding anyone back from a call up or something and was hogging a valuable spot on the roster. |

I think they're releasing him BECAUSE he reached 600, and also because they know they suck. One of the first things Thome said in his post-600 prss conference is that he wants to win a world series. That ain't gonna happen here in MN this year, so I think out of respect for Jim's dream, they're gonna let him try and find that dream and retire a happy man. |

I just realized that it's "placed on waivers" and not "released". Basically the first step to getting a deal done. Some other guys got the same treatment today, including: -Carlos Pena -Heath Bell -Jason Kubel My bad for saying "released". That's what Mike Jacobs got. BIG difference between that transaction and what's happening to these guys. |

Wanted to mention this last night and forgot, until reading on MLB.com. Last night, there was a point in the game where Cubs SS Starlin Castro was, to put it nicely, acting as if being out in the field was a punishment. He was unprepared for live play, was taking off his glove and holding it half the time, and several times, during a pitchers wind up, was seen shoveling sunflower seeds from his back pocket into his mouth. It got so bad, Bobby Valentine went on a 5-minute rant about how the Cubs need to, as a team, do something to teach him the ways of being a major leaguer, and not to play with such a lazy attitude. It really was that sickening to watch. The camera did wide shots of the entire field, with everyone looking prepared for a batted ball, except for him, just standing there, like a punk who didn't feel like he needed to be on the field. |

That's a shame, because when he's on, Starlin Castro can be impressive. I've seen a few apathetic slackers (heya, Larry Walker) on the field, but they would at least get in their crouch and look towards the batter's box during each pitch. |

That's the thing too. Castro is a promising, yet very young and obviously immature, player. He still has time to be molded into someone we won't resent with the right support of coaches and veterans around him to get him to treat the game with respect. |

Apparently the first game of the Marlins/Reds double-header had an attendance somewhere in the range of 350 people. 350! Yes, there's hurricane warnings and the game was pushed ahead a day to make sure it was played, but still... 350!? That's insane. I'm sure there's a lot of people who had tickets for thursday possibly couldn't make it to todays game, but... 350!? |

I was just thinking about how, not too recently but not long ago, people speculated that Derek Jeter could possibly reach Pete Rose's all time hits total... even as a bright eyed optimist, I can't see anyone ever reaching that total, ever. I still don't know how Pete Rose did it, and I've heard the breakdown of his stats countless times. While I'm on the subject of batting records, I can't imagine anyone with a 56+ game hitting streak. That's another one of those records that doesn't look that impressive as a number without much thought, but when you really look at it, it's insane to think someone would go a third of a season with at least one hit in every game. People always make big deals out of streaks reaching 30... that's barely HALF the record. I'd hate to see the fucking coverage a streak into the 40's would get, if that ever happens again. Edit: Oh, and fuck the Ripken record. No one's coming close to 1,000 games in a row these days of "resting" players. I doubt if anyone, on any team, plays all 162 games this season. |

While I think all three of those records are close to untouchable, here is one I think will never be broken Johnny Vander Meer threw two consecutive no-hitters So to break the record someone would have to throw 3 consecutive no-hitters I don't think we will someone tie that record let alone break it |

Went to the Cubs-Braves the other night. Really sucks how Wrigley is divided into "Bleacher Seats" and "Infield Seats; you can't walk around the entire field unless you have a ticket for both areas. I think I remember Fenway being like that, too (Yankee Stadium used to be). Completely silly. The surrounding bars close their outdoor patios about 30 minutes after the stadium lights are turned off. The interiors still go, but I imagine the outdoor cut-off is a concession for the residents. Not too many local or regional beers of note (and none in Wrigley)-- just Old Style and Leinenkugel. I've found some Goose Island beers around town, though. Cubs won 3-2 and Chipper Jones hit career homer 449 for the Braves. He'll probably be a Hall of Famer, so it's somewhat cool that I can say I saw "number X" of a certain player's career while I was on the road. I also remember seeing Greg Maddux get a win and Trevor Hoffman saving it, out in San Diego a few years ago. Random shit like that makes baseball traveling all the better. On the opposite of that, I drove to St Louis in 1998 in hopes of seeing Mark McGwire homer. Five other Cards did, but he didn't. I suppose, in the long run, that worked out okay. |

AJ Burnett needs to be released ASAP I know upper management won't release him because he makes $16+ million a year. Once Garcia is off the DL, Burnett has to be put in the bullpen if they don't release him |

Burnett pitched like ass again tonight? What a surprise. I'm just as surprised about that as I was finding out that Hitler didn't care much for people of the Jewish faith. |
