I can only assume with one word: Luck. The NL west isn't that good, but still, they're playing way over their heads.

Random Rays related observation... what the hell happened to Willy Aybar? I know the Rays declined to resign him for 2011, but he's still a very capable hitter/reserve type, and he's not signed to any Major League team. I know he's got personal issues, but that hasn't stopped teams before.

And talking about falling off the face of the earth: Scott Kazmir. He was released 2+ months ago, and no other team has even given him a minor league contract? Usually anyone released with a big contract can find somewhere else to play for league minimum. Look at Gary Sheffield with the Mets in 2009... or 2010. I forget.

And for someone popping back up on the map-- I saw Kevin Kouzmanoff is now with the Rockies and has promptly gone 4-for-17. He's part of their latest attempt to fill the gap at 3B. He's basically auditioning for next year and a potential #6 or 7 spot in the lineup.

Forgot to mention in my quickie Cubs/Braves recap that Jason Heyward was the final out, taking a pitch right down the middle for strike 3. It's baffling how far that guy has fallen.

Once Garcia is off the DL, Burnett has to be put in the bullpen if they don't release him

If he's in the bullpen, you run the risk of seeing him on the mound.

They can put him as the 11th or 12th guy in the bullpen-- the one you rarely see. Ramon Ortiz had that role with the Rockies at the end of 2007. Just weird, because he was actually the guy who got the "W" in the crazy tiebreaker game with the Padres.

Burnett can get 3 people out... most of the time. I'd personally prefer him to be released, but that's not likely to happen at this point of the season.

Well, it was fun while it lasted: Pittsburgh just dropped 2 straight to the Astros. They now need to go an other-wordly 19-8 the rest of the season to reach .500.

Their season really went south after getting jobbed in that extra-inning call in Atlanta (Braves' runner was clearly out, but he was called safe and the Bucs lost). Call it the Curse of Randy Marsh striking again-- a shitty ump screwed over what had been a promising season.

We haven't heard from Lenny Dykstra in awhile. So it's time:

Dykstra charged with indecent exposure

Gist: he placed ads for "housekeepers" on Craigslist. When they showed up, they were offered the opportunity to polish Little Lenny.

There's a Mets pitcher on the mound right now who can't possibly be taller than 5'4". He looks like a middle school kid pitching. I couldn't catch his name, but I think it's Herrera, or something along those lines.

Sounds like "Daniel Herrera". Read More About It!

Reporters didn't get a chance to interview him, because he was short on time. *rimshot*

He's listed as 5'6", but that's being generous. I'm remembering the high school varsity football roster that had me listed as 6'2" and 240 lbs, when I only ever maxed out at 6'0" and 220 lbs. In high school my max was probably 6'0" and 185.

Reminds me of Major League, when some punk comes up to Vaughn for an autograph and congratulates him on making the hall of shame for most wild pitches in an inning. "I thought you had to do something good to be famous." "Not if you do it colorfully."

The Marlins are leaving Joe Robbie/Pro Player/Dolphins/Sun Life Stadium this month and are having a little goodbye party. A few Former Marlins of Note are expected... including MIKE PIAZZA. Piazza lives in Miami, which is probably why he was easy to look up and invite.

I think "Mr. Marlin" Jeff Conine is still working with the club, so he'd probably be the most appropriate guest. He's there, so they're also bringing in Gary Sheffield and some others (what? No Nigel Wilson, owner of 3 MLB hits?!)

Pirates were officially eliminated from the Central Division title two days ago. Not a total disappointment, but Pirate Jokes have begun resurfacing amongst baseball writers once again.

Across MLB, it looks like the playoff teams are set. Barring an amazing collapse, it looks like we'll have:

AL:
-Yankees
-Red Sox
-Tigers
-Rangers or Angels

NL:
-Phillies
-Brewers
-Diamondbacks
-Braves

Only real race is the AL West, where the Angels are 2.5 behind the Rangers. AL East is still tight, but it's the same ol', samel ol', as whoever doesn't win that division will be the AL Wild Card.

Braves are about 8 games up on the Cardinals in the Wild Card, so it's pretty much locked up for them. Great....another playoff berth wasted on the Frickin' Braves, who will do their usual gig and promptly lose.

Unexpected Shit happens (see: last year), but I think Phillies/Red Sox will be the World Series. Second choices: Brewers and Tigers.

Rays are only 6.5 back of the Sawx... we still got a chance! Sorry, Joe Maddon has made me into a believer in the impossible.

You can always hope for a "1995 California Angels" implosion of the Red Sox.
