Maybe Brian Anderson, Rays broadcaster and '95 Angels implosion survivor, will reference that in hopes of giving a bad luck jynx to the Sox. :P |

Rays Trivia Question tonight... who choked the biggest september lead in AL History. Brian Anderson gets to talk about it, and I forgot Joe Maddon was a coach with the Angels then, too. |

Russell Martin hurt his hand, Cervelli is suffering from a concussion, and Montero is DH'ing, so Jorge is going behind the plate. Come on, Jorge! You can do it! Edit: First batter gets on and attempts to steal, and Jorge throws him out. Bad jump, high throw, still got him out, though. |

Clayton Kershaw threw inside and plunked Gerardo Parra, who had celebrated a home run the previous night. Pundits are concerned that doing so, in the sixth inning of game he was leading, might hurt Kershaw's Cy Young chances and his precious stats. I'd say they actually improved it. Throwing at a guy who celebrated a home run is pretty much an unspoken team requirement. That shows that Kershaw is a team guy first and less concerned about his stats. It's a requirement of being a Good Pitcher, part of the package he needs to have to be considered a Cy Young winner. (besides, he still got his 19th win) |

Justin Verlander should win the AL cy Young easily and even get strong MVP consideration IMO While Curtis Granderson and Adrian Gonzalez are both having great years, they also both have great lineup protection. I realize it is harder for pitchers to win MVP, but the Tigers would be a .500 team at best without him I do hope Granderson wins it. Partly because he is a Yankee and partly because while he has always been a good player, he has never been near this level before |

Verlander is reminding us what it's like to have a true Cy Young year. You can win AND have the stats that people gush over. |

I think a pitcher can win MVP if there's no real MVP position player. The AL has at least two in Granderson and Gonzalez, possibly three if you like charity work with Batista. Verlander is definitely worth a 3rd place vote for me. The guy won Cy Young last month in my eyes, now he's just running away with it like no one else has in years. |

So, going to a Braves home game on Saturday night. Complete with a postgame STYX concert. Friday night is Star Wars night... which means the tape of the game will be altered and "enhanced" about ten years from now. |

The only baseball games I have ever seen outside of NY is the Seattle Mariners at the old Kingdome. My half-brother lives in Portland and once when I went to see him we went to Seattle for a few days. Randy Johnson was very young then and was wild and started a bench clearing brawl because he hit a couple of people That and the Cleveland Indians AAA team in the early-mid 90s were in Portland, so saw one of their games also As much of a diehard Yankees fan as I am, as a kid I went to lots of Mets games. My dad (also a yankees fan) was a mid-level manager working for NYC government in contracts and services. One of his biggest clients then was Ticketron and they would give him Mets tickets a few games a year. This would have been in the late 70s and early 80s (I started watching baseball in 1976 at age 6) |

Braves won 1-0 behind 10 innings from Tim Hudson, who struck out 10. Chipper Jones had the lone RBI in the bottom of the 8th. Craig Kimbrel came on to strike out the Mets' side in the 9th. Inspired by another (fictional) rookie closer phenom from "Atlanta", we yelled "Yeah. Yer' fuckin' OUT", for each batter Kimbrel K'd. Possibly not a coincidence, but on the top of the left field stands in Turner Field is a giant Chick-Fil-A cow, holding a sign that currently reads: "Burgerz? Yer Owt". Oh, and who knew, but there's a FEUD of sorts amongst the members of Styx. They kicked out former singer Dennis DeYoung, so they no longer do "Mr. Roboto". But all their other crap is safe. BONUS tidbit: on Friday night we went to a place called "Wild Bill's", a rock club about 15 miles north of downtown Atlanta, to see Skid Row. As expected, they sucked something fierce, but one of their opening acts was a local band called BIGFOOT who kicked all sorts of tushy. Got that "beard rock" look, or a throwback to late 60's/early 70's Sabbath...sorta' like Monster Magnet if Monster Magnet didn't suck. Anyways, before one of their songs, the singer simply said: "this song's about the devil". Awesome. Their last song? "This song's about Evel Kneivel". More awesome. |

Boston's Wild Card lead is down to 2 games, but they have 7 games left against the Orioles. That'd be swell for them, but they're currently losing to the O's. Not to slam the O's too much, but if you have 7 games to redeem yourself against them and you fail, you are not a playoff team. |
