It's a little silly that MLB.TV is STILL promoting a "get the rest of the season" package for 9.99. When we have all of one week and change to go. It should be free for the final week, with a chance to sign up for 2012 at a slight discount. |

If $9.99 is for the last week, playoffs, and access to archives for the next few months... pass. Unless you work a schedule that prohobits you from ever watching baseball, that's just a silly offer. |

I watched the Rockies/Padres game last night. Bad idea. Both teams are, at best, Triple-A squads right now. Rockies' Wilin Rosario struck out in the 9th, by swinging at a pitch that was nose-high. Just lame baseball. Aaron Cook's starting today and it's a good thing he was on the DL earlier in the year. Otherwise, he would've led the NL in losses. |

I hate to say this, but I almost don't want the Red Sox to make the playoffs this year. With the way they're playing right now, and the injuries to the team they'll probably just be eliminated first round anyhow, and I would rather they try and heal up for next season |

Also, I think the fact that the Reds didn't even contend for the Wild Card this year is ridiculous. They've got a strong enough team that they should be contending for the division. Granted, they aren't great, but a better manager would have had them in the Playoffs. |

My natural instinct says "Sox will slump into the playoffs, and win the whole thing", based purely on the flashbacks to 2004, and their impressive run in 2007, when Cleveland had them dead in the water, and the Sox came back and won that series, then whooped the Rockies like they tried to mug their mommas. |

Even though I am a Yankees fan, there was no doubt in my mind the Red Sox were going to come back from being down 3-1 to the Indians for 2 reasons: 1) When was the last time the Indians won a World Series? 2) More importantly, the Red Sox had Beckett and Schilling going in Games 5 and 6 (had to google in which order they pitched) and Dice-K was actually pretty good that year for Game 7 Then with the way they thumped the Indians (by a combined 30-5 which again i googled) I figured the Rockies who took an all-time run just to make the postseason and were severly overmatched talent wise by the Red Sox, would get swept. And they were |

Rockies suffered from an 8 or 9 day layoff in the 2007 World Series. They had won 7 games in a row to sweep through the NL playoffs and nobody in the world wanted to play them. That included the Philadelphia Phillies who won the Series in 2008 with essentially the same cast. Then, the Rockies had to sit at home, cool off, and wait until Boston and Cleveland completed their full 7 game ALCS. I don't think the Rockies were "severely over-matched" at all. They had an MVP candidate in Matt Holliday, a Rookie of the year and MVP candidate in Troy Tulowitzki, plus two more 100 RBI/25+ HR/around .300 hitters in Brad Hawpe and Garrett Atkins. Not to mention that Todd Helton had a great year as well. Compare that offense to Boston, who had Mike Lowell and David Ortiz as their big guns. Pitching wasn't bad for the Rockies, as Jeff Francis won 17 games, Josh Fogg pitched like he had sold his soul to Satan and the bullpen was excellent. They matched up well with Boston-- it wasn't like the Red Sox were a big juggernaut playing the pesky underdogs who just lucked their way into the World Series. Aside from Beckett and Papelbon, the Boston pitching wasn't all that impressive. The Rockies were absolutely fearless during their streak and didn't know that they were supposed to lose to these supposedly better teams. They had that enigmatic "Intangibles" stats going for them. But that layoff absolutely killed them. If both teams had had the same layoff time after their League Championships, I guarantee you that a sweep would not have happened. Heck, the Rockies might've even won the thing. I'm sorry, but it's completely misinformed to apply a blanket statement that the Rockies were severely over-matched, talent-wise, thus causing them to get swept. |

I agree that the Six didn't have anything definitive after Schilling and Beckett. He'll, it's still our #1 problem. In 2007 Bucholz and Lester were just establishing themselves, and Matsuzaka was inconsistent as well. Okajima was blowing past people in the bullpen, though that would change. Offensively, we spread it out more that season, especially with Manny beginning his decline. It's no wonder we got rid of him the next season. 2007 was the year of Pedroia, Lowell and Youkilis. Those three produced what Manny could not and helped us throughout the line up, which really is our strength. Outside of Lugo, we really didn't have a bad hitter that year, but the Rockies were a balanced opponent as well. I really think the layoff was what killed them, not just our offense |

Sometimes teams just run out of gas. Like the 2008 Rays. Honestly, after the ALCS, I thought they had it in the bag. Then they were just outplayed by the Phillies. The Rays put up a valiant Game 5 fight, but that weather bullshit really fucked everything up for a few days. And at least Hinske went down swinging. That's a jab at Beltran's called strike three to end the 2006 NLCS between St. Louis and the Mets. SWING DAMMIT! |

My goodness, I've been watching my fair share of Sox games the last two weeks, and if I were them, I wouldn't want to make it to the playoffs. The pitching is crap, a lot of errors in the field, they aren't hitting (except for the occasional 10+ run mashing), especially with runners on, and are playing like they are already packed to go home by the end of the week. My hatred for Boston isn't as deep as it was 6-7 years ago, but even I feel bad for some of their players getting trotted out and just being embarrassed by everyone, from New York, to Tampa, to fucking Baltimore, the worst team in the AL. Edit: Putting a lot of blame on the unproductive years for Carl Crawford and John Lackey is a shallow attempt to cover up that the team, for the most part, has been playing like ass, with a few notable exceptions. I know they are having their worst years in the majors, but Crawford isn't doing god awful, and Lackey... well, maybe he's got a case against him, but WHY IS TIM WAKEFIELD BEING PUT OUT EVERY 5TH DAY, WHEN HE CAN'T PITCH HIS WAY THROUGH 5 INNINGS OF DECENT EFFORT?!?! He's old, washed up, and his knuckleball isn't effective anymore, so he's just trash now. |

I don't think anyone really deserves the blame for what happened to the Red Sox. This was just a case of "not your year". Shit just happens sometimes. Guys get hurt and the team drops off as a result. Just have to accept it and move on. You don't always have to throw someone under the bus. The Pirates are also headed to a potential 90 loss season after being 53-47 on the 25th of July. The team has gone 18-40 since then. |

The Pirates have lost at least 94 games, every year, since 2005...so for them to potentially "only" lose 90 is a step in the right direction. I think they've had the worst record in the bigs since the All-Star Break; not to mention that blown call in Atlanta which killed their gas tank. It also ruined Clint Hurdle's chance for NL Manager of the Year. Now, you pretty much have to give that award to Kirk Gibson for the job he did in Arizona. |

I wouldn't put the majority of the blame on Crawford and Lackey, though Lackey has earned part of the blame. I'd put it on injuries and some bad play. The Sox are dependent upon Bucholz and Beckett in the rotation, and we haven't had Bucholz most of the season(at least it feels that way). Lester and Lackey haven't been able to hold the rotation up, and Wakefields knuckled isn't always consistent(If you've read his biography you'd know that, as every other paragraph emphasizes how "erratic and unpredictable" it is). Crawford didn't live up to the hype (don't get me started on Cashman running his price up and admitting that during a recessionary period. Talk about ridiculous) but he's not the only one struggling. Drew hasn't lived up to his contract once, Youk got hurt, and Reddick has been inconsistent on offense and defense. Honestly, the only consistency is MVP caliber play from Ellsbury, Pedroia and Gonzalez who are trying to carry the team with some help from Ortiz. But 4 men an offense do not make. Not against teams like the Phillies, Brewers, Rangers or Tigers. |
