Red Sox fans have really turned into entitled assholes after getting two rings in the past decade.

I never understood the "fired for not inspiring the team" when said team won so many games. If you're a manager of a team that should be winning 90 games and you're winning 70-ish, then yes, there might be a lack of desire or repsect in playing for that manager.

If Terry's gone, then Epstein should be, too. Honestly, how many bad signings or trades has this guy made? Wait, how many GOOD ones? It's sad when re-signing your pushing 40 backup catcher is your most notable, positive, transaction. A rotation consisting of Tim Wakefield, oft-injured Erik Bedard, and Andrew Miller is something a team fighting for an 80 win season should have, not "the best team ever". Crawford doesn't fit with whatever the Boston lineup was supposed to be, Adrian Gonzalez couldn't hit shit against New York or Tampa all season, John Lackey is/was a disaster, excuses or not, J.D. Drew is still a big waste of money... it just goes on. This Red Sox team is the new Yankees circa 2003-2007. Big time failures despite bloated payroll and "all stars at every position", increasingly doing worse, not even making the playoffs now.

Red Sox timelime...

07 - Won World Series
08 - Lost ALCS, 4-3
09 - Lost ALDS, swept I think
10 - Failed to make playoffs, remained competetive despite major injuries
11 - Failed to make playoffs, choked away playoff spot like no other team before

Reminds me of the Yankees, who...

03 - Lost World Series
04 - Lost ALCS, 4-3
05 - Lost ALDS; 3-2
06 - Lost ALDs; 3-1
07 - Lost ALDS; 3-1
08 - Failed to make playoffs

Edit: Sounds like i'm sympathetic for the Red Sox, and I kind of am, more so for the individuals effected rather than their fanbase. The fans can still suck a fuck, but I do appreciate some of the talent and staff they have.

His contract is conveniently up, so they're letting Francona walk as it's not a real "firing".

I can see how a Sawx fan would think: "if he can't win, get somebody in there who CAN. We did the same thing in 2003/2004 when he canned Grady Little. We want another championship". I don't see how bringing in anybody other than Francona would be the instant upgrade they think they need.

I would cut him some slack, as Francona basically pulled off baseball's seemingly impossibility by winning the World Series not once, but twice. But I guess the stay of execution is a little less than four years.

Predictions time... the American League is going to be a tough one to call, so I'll do NL first...

Philadelphia over St. Louis in 4

I don't think St. Louis has enough in them, pitching or hitting. They won the season series, but this is the playoffs and it's 0-0 again. I will be shocked if St. Louis wins more than 1.

Milwaukee over Arizona in 5

I don't know much about either team, except Arizona came out of nowhere this season. Milwaukee has the prettier lineup, so that's my deciding factor.

Because of personal bias, the AL is just a hard toss up. I want my teams to win, but at the same time, do I think they will?

New York over Detroit... in 4.

I know Verlander has been the man, but it's the same way with the Yankees vs. Twins back when Johan was the god of the AL Central. You can't count on one pitcher to win a series, and even that one pitcher can lose, too. I haven't seen enough of Detroit, and since it's all about Verlander, I can't imagine they have that much.

Texas or Tampa Bay in 5

As much as I wanted to say Tampa over Texas in 5, I just can't say it convincingly. Texas has just as good of a pitching staff, and more consistant hitting. the Rays are on fire right now, and playing the first two in Texas doesn't hurt. Last year, the road team won each of the games in the best of 5 between TEX/TB last year, but Texas also had Cliff Lee shut them down twice. So who knows...

I echo your NL predictions. The Good Land Brewers have been knocking for awhile, and I feel this is their breakthrough year. They're hoping it works, as they put all their eggs in the 2011 Season Basket.

AL-- Tigers over Yankees in 5.
I'm not sold on the Yankees pitching past CC and I think the Tigers hitting is much better than anybody expects. I kinda' feel that whoever wins this series will go on to the World Series.

Rays over Rangers in 4
I'll go with the hot card and pick the Rays. Rangers haven't been punched in the mouth and had to claw, recently, like the Rays have. MLB Network tried to put together a package for the Rangers 2011 season...and one "highlight" was George W. Bush almost getting bonked by a pop-up. They're a good team, but I feel the Rays are better, right now.

Oh, I also noticed that the Rays' Dan Johnson was one of the heroes in Wednesday's game. I was pleasantly surprised to see that, since he was the batter selected for the "if he strikes out, a whole section gets ICE CREAM" promotion at the Toledo/Durham game I went to.

One of those "well I'll be damned" moments. Here was a random guy I saw at a random Triple-A game in a random promotion that might be considered embarrassing. Then here is, four months later, helping his major league club make the Playoffs.

Dan Johnson is the King of Quad-A. He's had two hits in 4 seasons worth remembering... a 9th inning, game tying homer off Papelbon in Boston in 2008 in a game that had first place on the line, and now Game 162 of the 2011 Seasons. Truely the greatest player to ever suck in Rays history. Dan Johnson should remain on the 25-man roster for life whenever the Rays need a miracle home run.

I am shocked the Rays won 9-0. I expected a lower scaring game, but this is the problem with the Rays. They can string a few games together where they score plenty of runs, but then a few game stretch of not scoring, and one starter most definitely effected by a lack of run support is Shields, who goes in Game 2.

From everything I've read, Francona walked on his own. He seemed frustrated with the atmosphere in the clubhouse, which points towards recent acquisitions more than long term Red Sox players. I know that's the face they want to project, but the reactions of the front office seem genuinely surprised.

Honestly, I would have loved for him to stick around. He proved himself to be one of the best in the league at what he does. Mind you, he's got a stacked roster, but some guys *Dusty Baker* can't seem to win with a talented roster.

Speaking of Dusty, I agree whole heartfelt with everything Mad Dog said. Which is scary, as we don't usually agree Like that

I have a sickening feeling that they're going to give Baker another year to fuck up the team. They need to get him out because he was hell bent on ruining Chapman's arm this year. And Baker hasn't done anything to you know... coach Volquez on his control. Volquez still has all his velocity and shit, his control just sucks. So fucking coach the guy already.

I don't want Tony LaRussa though. I will refuse to root for them as a team if they hire that fuckface though.

But back to Baker. This team should have won 90+ games this year. They were talented at every position and they added good depth. This team sucked because Dusty can't manage a pitching staff to save his life and he has guys swinging for the fences on every pitch. He just needs to go, he's done barely anything positive for the team and I truly believe anyone could have managed last year's team to the playoffs.

This was the year for them to get back to the playoffs, win a series and show progress from last year. Instead, they regressed, that's Baker's fault.

I should have made predictions before the games started yesterday

Yankees over Tigers in 4

I was going to say Rangers over Rays in 5, so I have to stick to that even though the Rays thumped them last night

Phillies over Cards in 3. I know it's too easy to pick that, but the Phillies pitching is just awesome and while the Cards do have a few great hitters, I still think it will be a sweep

I will go with the Brewers over the D-Backs in 5. I don't know much about either team so I am going with the Brewers since they rarely ever make the playoffs and they are home

The rain out last night means that AJ Burnett is going to start Game 4

Why the fuck is he on the playoff roster? I would have had Colon on the roster to begin with not AJ

And why isn't Phil Hughes the starter instead of AJ fucking Burnett?

I agree with Colon being left off the roster. His arm is dead. Burnett isn't much better, but he's had a couple of good starts to end the season. I'd rather pitch Hughes over both, personally, but I guess Girardi knows what he's doing. I guess.

The Orioles finished 69-93, which is three wins better than last season. Hitting is ok (finished 4th in the league in Home Runs, and I think 6th in Batting Average), they just need to work on their pitching.

Major props to Baltimore for bringing it to a lot of playoff contenders during the final weeks of the season, especially Boston. Call it playing for pride or whatever, but with some more pitching, Baltimore can be a suprise contender in the very near future.

As much as I hate to say it, it looks as though the Reds will try for LaRussa when they get the chance. I used to love him as a manager, but he's a 20th Century manager in a 21st Century league. The Reds will go after him, though, because they want to be the Cardinals
