I wanted Milwaukee to win because they're sorta' what the Pirates aspire to be (and could be). Both were terrible about 5 years ago and the Brewers have come out of obscurity to make some noise. I agree that Fielder and Morgan come off as ding-dongs. A bummer, since I used to enjoy Morgan when he was a Pirate. He seemed like a hard-working guy; not projected to make the team, but he did and became an over-achiever. Then this year he opened his mouth and became a ding-dong. Pretty sure Texas is now the first back-to-back AL champ since the Yankees in 2000-2001 (who actually won three in a row, then). So I'll give them credit and pick them to win the World Series in 6. Haven't picked them at all in the past two years. Now that I have, watch St Louis win. |

Yankees made it to the WS 4 years in a row, not 3. They won in '98-'00 and lost the '01 to the Diamondbacks. Beat Padres in 98, Braves in 99 and Mets in '00 |

Yer' right. I always forget to distinguish between the '96 and '98 teams and forget to count one of 'em. |

First Non-Yankee team to go back-to-back since Toronto, when it comes to the AL. I'm the DWB version of Tim McCarver. |

One of my favorite WTF McCarver moments was about 10 years ago during a Yankees/A's playoff series. One of the Yankees was clowning around in the dugout, putting a headlock on somebody. Joe Buck quipped: "he's a big wrestling fan, probably showing off some of those moves to his teammates". McCarver, not missing a beat,: "and Matt Stairs... is a HOCKEY fan". Yes, and Wade Boggs ate fried chicken. It all fits together! |

Tim McCarver would be great at that Kevin Bacon game. He could link anything together with his nonsense and random "tidbits." |

Sad that McCarver used to be considered something of a "breath of witty fresh air" in the 80's. I'm usually against beating a dead horse when something really sucks... wait, no I'm not. But this "Living on the Black" book took a even bigger nosedive with crap like this:
-Rockies came along in 1993.
-Cecil never won the MVP, although he finished #2 in 1990 and 1991 (oh, BTW, guess who won in 1990? RICKEY HENDERSON). He also calls the (Devil) Rays an "expansion mistake". The book was written in 2007, so it's funny how the old tonic of "winning" solved the Rays' problems in 2008. I'll cut him some slack on that because, before 2008, the Rays were considered a mess. I get that he wanted to use Mussina and Glavine and their respective travels as a window into all of baseball, but it's a piss-poor effort. I almost need to finish the book now just to see what other garbage I can find. |

That book sounds like how the Rays owner described the franchise when he first took over the team. It's like a bad onion, and the more you peel away at it, the nastier it gets. I would never go as far to say "mistake", but they were poorly ran and there was never a clear, consistant direction the team tried to follow. They spent money on free agents like Canseco, Greg Vaughn, and others, and almost all of them flopped. They never really developed many stars in their minor league organizations until guys like Crawford, Upton, Baldelli (Who suffered the unfortunate fate of his chronic fatigue), traded one of their best players for a MANAGER, and then went with a youth movement despite having poor pitching at every level and never really putting together a strong core rotation until a few years ago, with the development of Shields, the trade for Garza, the trade for Kazmir (when he still produced), solid performances by guys like Andy Sonnanstine and Edwin Jackson (in a low-brow trade with a Dodgers), and then there's David Price, Jeff Niemann, Jeremy Hellickson, and Wade Davis, with guys like Alex Cobb and Matt Moore waiting in the wings. Sorry, just had to rant. I'll be the first to say the Rays couldn't do a damn thing right, but they also had their share of horrible luck. Josh Hamilton, anyone? The Rays did a good job of letting Hamilton go elsewhere, away from his troubles. |

Odd. Read an article about this OCCUPY______ "protest". Some demonstrators were planning to go to St. Louis, buy a ticket to the World Series right before game time, then streak on the field to protest whatever ambiguous cause they feel they're "fighting". Big problem-- you're expecting to get walk-up tickets for the World Series in St. Louis?! Riiiiiight. The place where it's not unusual to see 20,000 fans line up five hours before a game and fill the streets around Busch Stadium to get a free promo item in mid-summer? Considering these Occupiers are supposedly protesting big spending and excess wealth, good luck finding a walk-up ticket to the World Series in St. Louis for less than 3 hundy. |

Sure it was "The NFL on FOX" promoting "The World Series on FOX", but I thought it was kinda' cool that they got Josh Hamilton and Lance Berkman to do the Cowboys-Rams coin toss in Dallas. |

And to tie up the season, Tony LaRussa "retires" after winning the World Series.. Didn't realize he was 67, but I doubt it'll stick. Unless he develops some health problems. I wouldn't be surprised if someone comes calling in a few years. LaRussa is supposedly a close friend with Jim Leyland. Leyland "retired", recharged, then came back to lead the Tigers back into relevance. Wouldn't be shocked if LaRussa does the same, two years down the road. |
