Yeah, Sox went 0-6 in the pre-season but they nailed the Yankees 9-6 in the season opener.

All the games count the same in the standings, so the 0-6 in pre-season comment is ridiculous

They are still 2-7 after tonight, though I will admit this could easily pull the Red Sox out of their funk. Granted I don't watch the Red Sox games against any team but the Yanks, but Beckett was certainly on tonight and talk of his decline was certainly wrong at least tonight

I take back what I said about on paper the Yankees having the best bullpen in baseball. Tonight was pretty bad, though as well as Beckett pitched, Yankees weren't winning anyway

Joba was so hittable and unwatchable tonight. Time to trade him for a bunch of baseballs and bats, maybe a futon

This was the first game of the season I watched and what a game to pick

Drabek > Yankees :P

I remember seeing a quick news blurb in Spring Training with the headline: "Joba worse than Yankees thought". I thought: 'yeah, no shit'... but the article was actually talking about how Joba's injury was worse than the Yankees thought.

We haven't talked much about Manny retiring, but the strange thing is that nobody's surprised. Told the Main Chickie about it over Saturday breakfast and she said: "so? What's the big deal? Isn't he the one who flipped out before and keeps screwing up?"

I think I mentioned something about how "Manny would flake out and enter a Brazilian chess tournament" back in the offseason thread. Still, it's disappointing and an embarrassment that he flaked out.

Manny quit on everyone and himself. Cheating is terrible, but quitting is even worse.

Finally something to smile about. The Rays are WHOMPING the Sawx 7-0 in the 2nd inning, and nobody out. Take that, Dice-K.

Granted Dice-K had some success a few years ago, but what a waste of money he turned out to be

Not as bad as Kei Igawa of the Yankees though. I remember the two of them having these huge posting fees. And then doing almost nothing (in Dice K's case) and NOTHING AT ALL in Igawa's case

Seems the hitters that come from Japan (Ichiro, Hideki Matsui) play better than the pitchers that come from Japan (Dice-K, Igawa, Irabu from years ago, Kaz Ishii)

It's a gamble either way. Hitter wise, Kaz Matsui and Akinori Iwamura are a couple of examples that didn't produce as much in the states, the former more than the latter, except for Aki's 2010 season. Ew...

Trying to remember his name-- but it was the Japanese second baseman who played for the White Sox a few years ago. Phillies traded for him when Chase Utley got hurt in 2009 (I think).

Kaz Matsui was a big part of the Rockies 2007 season and World Series run. But that was his only year of significance.

Of course, Nomo had a decent enough career while he was over here.

Dice-K had a good first year, but then everyone figured his stuff out. Not surprising, but still. There are some good Japanese pitchers, but they're usually bullpen pitchers and not the ones people blow their loads over.

To put a nam to someone mentioned by EvE, Tadahito Iguchi had a few years with the White Sox, but tailed off mighty fast, then bounced around with a few teams afterwards.

Oh heck... how soon we forget Tsuyoshi Shinjo! He was the guy the Mets picked up the same year as Ichiro came over. Was probably most famous for being exactly average to below-average and having Big Ass Wristbands.

Another Mets import from the late 90's... Masato Yoshii. The Mets had him and a (for the first of several times) washed up Nomo in the same rotation at one point.

Masato Yoshii. Dang..how could I forget about him?! Seriously.

He had one of my favorite moments when he was with the Rockies: he hit a homerun at Coors Field, but wasn't sure what to do. He got to first base and looked lost. Coaches had to tell him to run and touch all of the bases. Fun stuff.

Watched the highlight show on MLB Network this morning (one of 23 that run during the day). Have to say that Dan Plesac is starting to sound like TNA’s DON WEST.

“Whack! He’s the Crushin’ Russian, Kevin Kouzmanoff!”

Also, Juan Pierre has been in the bigs almost 10 years and he STILL can’t find a batting helmet that fits him.
