He's been in the majors for 8-9 years, but stayed there without shuttling back and forth to Triple A for about 6. He went Dodgers, Rays, Tigers, Diamondbacks, White Sox, the last four in 4 years. I won' be surprised if he's a trade deadline move this year. |

Maybe this is wrong for me to say, but I'm glad te Dodgers and Mets are in the toilet financially. Something drastic has to be done about these outrageous contracts and payrolls, and maybe teams with 100-150 mil. a year payrolls that have a large media market going bankrupt is the wake up call the league needs. |

It won't be a wake up call. And that's for 2 reasons: 1) The extenuating circumstances (Mets = Madoff whether they admit it or not and Dodgers = the neverending divorce of the McCourts) 2) There are some teams that will always spend with current ownership (Yankees and Red Sox) There is no salary cap so anyone can spend what they want Personally I think there should never be a salary cap, but if there is one do it like the NFL does it, not the NBA. The NBA with the current team being able to pay more and then things like the mid-level exception make it a soft cap. If you are going to institute a cap then do it all the way like the NFL does the one thing that sucks for NFL players is a lack of guaranteed contracts. Football is the most violent and injury filled sport and you can cut a player right off an injury What to me is the dumb thing about baseball payroll is more the amount of years given to each player (granted the $ per year is high also) but giving 6 or 7 year contracts to any player especially a pitcher is ridiculous |

...and speaking of overpaid pitchers: Jorge De La Rosa blows out his arm, will have Tommy John surgery and is gone for at least a year. In the same game, a guy fell from the center field stairs at Coors Field and is in bad condition at a hospital. Going out on a limb, but I'm guessing BEER was involved some way. I'm going to the game tonight, so I expect some knee-jerk BS announcement about "stair safety". Also, Troy Tulowitzki is like a 1974 Chevy Vega: shitty clutch. I keep wondering where he's getting his numbers and accolades from, because every time I see him (at a game or on TV), he's grounding out to the left side. |

Went to the Tigers/Red Sox game, tonight. Loved that Tim Wakefield was pitching. He cranked it all the way up to 66MPH, but would sometimes take a lil' something off at 65MPH. He ended up working 7 innings and getting the win. After the game, saw the lamest fireworks show in professional sporting events history. A fog had rolled in and, with the thick air, all the smoke lingered in the stadium. So you couldn't see any fireworks blasting. Oh, and Comerica Park is just SO damn adorable. Giant tiger statues everywhere. Tigers with lighted balls in the mouths as lamps. Even little tigers on the side of each aisle seat. The skyline view's not too bad, either. But I believe one of the tall buildings behind right field is completely vacant. It's about 30-40 stories, looks to be concrete and it's sealed off. Weird. |

I think our pal Sabres is a BlueJays fan-- no disrepect to him, but SkyDome/Rogers Centre sucks. It's like a souped-up version of Royals Stadium in the 80's. It's not a baseball "park" at all, it's a big utilitarian stadium. Although they do have the "World's Fastest Grounds Crew", who groom all of 50 square feet of dirt around the bases at the end of the 3rd and 6th. Plus they have the Unofficial MLB record for most urinals in a single men's room with 85. Had some Shitty Directions and ended up driving down Bloor St. in Toronto at noon on a Saturday. No left turns and the right lane is closed or full of parking at random times. It's also trying to be a Hippie Town, but half-assing it. I've been to some Hippie Towns like Austin or Boulder, where they have bike lanes, pedestrian walkways and other shit. Toronto's still trying to be a modern motor-driven town and the two concepts don't work well together. Pedestrians just walk anywhere, there are no bike lanes, public transportation (bought from Cleveland) clogs the city streets and it's basically Mass Confusion. I will never go back to Toronto unless it's for work or when long-range public teleportation is invented. OK, so I did pick up some World Series turf at the novelty stand. |

We're two months into the season, so let's say what are some of the biggest surprises of the 2011 season, so far... 1. With my own bias going first, the fact that both the Rays and Sawx are over .500 and within striking distance of the AL East lead. I honestly didn't think that was possible, considering their mutually terrible starts of 2-9 and 2-11. - The Epic Fail of the Minnesota Twins, thanks to a butt load of injuries to key contributers (cough:Mauer) and a sub-par rotation. - The Cardinals and Indians lead their Central divisions, both surprising for different reasons. The Cards are missing their #1 starter, and their old #1 only has one win so far this season, not to mention Pujols' slow start. The Indians, on the other hand, are supposed to be in a rebuiling phase, not dominating the division. - Ubaldo Jimenez, who was a bastard not to be reckoned with in 2010, didn't get his first win of the season until last week. - Jose Bautista wasn't a one year wonder. - The Pirates are, as of this post, 28-29, just a game under .500. You can do it! |

Along those lines, you have to consider Asdrubal Cabrera a surprise. I think he's pretty much the AL MVP to this point. |

The Twins have a five game win streak. W. T. F. I honestly couldn't name to you our roster. At least their hitting now, and Mijares and Caps each only fucked up once last night and didn't give up the game. |

As much as it pains me to say this, the Red Sox own the Yankees this season After tonight, Red Sox have won 6 of the 7 games played between them this year |

Watched some of that Yankees-Sox tilt, as well. Big Sloppi hitting that homer and instantly flipping his bat was funny... just cuz' I thought the ball had a chance to go foul. |

McCutchen Walk-off HR gets Bucs to .500 Like the commentators say in this clip: "After 60 games, they're 30-30". Wanted to post this, because it appears that only about 37 people saw it live. This gets me all chilly. Andrew McCutchen's probably my favorite player at the moment, so it's nice to see him hit a HR to get the Pirates to .500. Then it just makes me jizzy to see my man Clint Hurdle there, too. Am I being too much of a fan when I say: "if you're not hoping the Pirates make .500 this year, then you're not a baseball fan" ? |

I've been pulling for them since at least 2005. I think they have a legitimate shot this year. |

To paraphrase Donald Sutherland, I hope all them positive waves pay off, man. I wasn't a fan of any of these teams, but it made me happy to see the Rays, Brewers and Twins turn it around in the past decade. Rockies, too, but I had a much more personal stake in them. A Pirates turnaround would be amazing. I know the dead ghosts of my grandpappy, great gandpappy and great-great grandpappy would be thrilled. Plus I wouldn't feel like such a loser for going to see them in Bradenton all those years. Came back home in March 2007 and I was geeked because I had a sweet spot autographed ball from both McCutchen and Neil Walker. A friend told me: "let me know when you want a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to redeem those baseballs". |
