I've always been an underdog supporter. When the Rays FINALLY got their 1st winning season, it was a magical experience. Losing a World Series didn't suck because for a while it never seemed possible to be there. |

On june 1st, the Twins were 16 1/2 games out. Today, they are nine games out. Not bad for a AAA team. |

The Angels released Scott Kazmir, who posted a 17.00 ERA during 5 starts of a minor league rehab assignment. Kaz's career had been spiraling for the last couple of seasons. Sad to see someone once so dominate turn into... well, a junk heap guy "earning" 14 million this year to do nothing. I loved Kaz, and it's a shame to see his career fade so fast. |

Unfortunately that happens with alot of pitchers before they hit 30. A few very good/great years and washed up by the time they are 30 Look at Chien-Ming Wang Look at Dontrelle Willis And going back to the 90s look at Jim Abbott |

Dontrelle is definitely the closest in the situation now that I think about it. He went from ace to what the fuck overnight it seemed. Wang was bit by injury bugs and is still trying to make it with the Nats, but it's been, what, 3 years since he's been in the majors? |

On a MUCH milder scale, you could add Jason Jennings to that list. Strangely enough, I pulled out an old promo jersey tee-shirt of the guy, to wear to the gym yesterday. He wasn't exactly an "ace", but definitely a capable starter who could potentially win you about 12 games a year. The local media made him out to be Nolan Ryan and was in an uproar when he was traded to Houston. I supported the trade, but damn did his career go south in a hurry. Same deal with Jeff Francis. Had his "breakthrough" in '07, but broke something along the way and is now eating innings with the Royals. |

I feel good about my pre-season pick of the Brewers winning the NL Central. With St. Louis slowing down, it looks like it's their division the rest of the way. Although Pittsburgh is only 4 games back:) Check this sentence: "it's June 21 and the Pittsburgh Pirates are only 4 games back". |

The Rays should've traded B.J. Upton when they had the chance at the beginning of the year. He's predictably batting barely over .200, he hits the occasional home run, and his defense in CF ranges from spectacular to lazy. We could easily mend an outfield together with Joyce, Zobrist, Fuld, Damon, and Ruggiano, plus Desmond Jennings waiting in the wings. Upton is a lazy waste of space, and I will say this until the day he leaves St. Pete. |

Jim Riggleman gets the Washington Nationals playing well, then promptly resigns since they don't want to extend his contract. I don't understand it. Get your team playing well and end the season by contending (or at least with a winning record), THEN you'd have some extra ammo when it comes to negotiating your contract. Instead, he leaves right as things get interesting, because JIM RIGGLEMAN has such a sparkling resume'. |

I don't remember Jason Jennings but I do know Jeff Francis. Do you guys think Dice-K fits in this conversation? Two very good years and then the last 3 years have been mostly crappy partly because of injuries. |

I think he's a different monster. Seriously over-hyped international "superstar" that dominated what was basically Quad-A baseball. He could throw 12 different pitches, none of them with excellent command, he could find the strike zone, after throwing 30 pitches an inning, and he was good when in trouble, usually because he walked the bases loaded. I won't bother with his attitude and "personal problems" when it came to his work out routine. He had a good year and a half, because people had to adjust to him. Then they did. And it was painfully obvious how mediocre he really was. Edit: Still waiting for that "Gyro Ball" that was going to make him pitch consecutive no-hitters, by the way. In short, he's just another in the list of "one year wonder" international pick-ups. I won't be surprised if Aroldis Chapman is the next victim. He throws 105 mph... and that's it. And he can't really pitch in consecutive games, unless you want a serious drop-off in velocity. And his manager is a notorious arm killer (trademark to Cubs fans). |

Alex Fernandez is another one who fits this I double checked and he retired at 32, but he was basically done in the Marlins WS winning season of 1997 Was very good with the White Sox for several years before that Steve Avery Awesome with the Braves for several years in the early 90s.......He wound up playing until he was 29 in 1999, but he was basically done by 1994. 3 awesome seasons, a few injured seasons with the Braves. Then tried to continue with the Red Sox and Reds Retired and tried a comeback on 2003 with the Tigers, but failed He was 47-22 from 1991-1993 (I googled that) and he went downhill quickly age 24 I think this is the best example of someone washed up by 26 |

He was never an ace level guy. He would pitch ace level baseball for about 12 games and then fall off the face of the Earth. Even when he was supposedly good you could tell he never had the kind of stamina you needed to survive a 34 start schedule in the Majors. |

The term "ace" is thrown around loosely (cough:NY ChienMing Wang), but he had a couple of outstanding seasons which could label him as the Marlins ace at the time, but I do agree, he would have a great year, then follow with an average year. Then the average year turned into a nightmare. |

Even his supposed great years were overrated. He would carry into say around this time of year with a great looking 1.30 ERA and everyone would be on the bandwagon. Then you wouldn't hear about him for the rest of the year and find out he finished with like a 3.50 ERA after falling of in the second half of the year. Looking at his stats now and 2005 was pretty much it for a great year he had. His WHIP was low. He won 22 games and he had a 2.63. ERA. Wang... he only got hype because he was the best pitcher on a couple of Yankee squads that had absolute garbage for starters. |
