Harmon Killebrew passed away today at age 74

He was a Twins player and made it to the HOF
Played 3 different positions: LF, 1B and 3B

He has esophageal cancer. I remember hearing on Sports Center last week that he released a statement he was going into hospice care and his cancer progressed to the point where there was nothing else that could be done

I never saw him play as he retired in 1975 (I started watching baseball in 1977), and even though he did live to 74, cancer is such a killer that this is sad

RIP Harmon Killebrew

I just read the story about him entering a hospice late last week. I was hoping he would hang for a bit longer. Nice guy and a great player. He's honored with the Twins, but I know the Nationals also honor him in some way as well (since he started his career when the Twins were still the DC Nationals/Senators).

My "Killer" story: during the Opening Week of 2001 I was driving down the interstate and randomly saw a spa/hot tub store with a big banner that read: "Meet Harmon Killebrew" and the date. The next day I took my lunch hour to drive over there and, with about 5 other guys, got to chat with him for awhile. I asked him about Fort Myers, since I had just visited the Twins' Spring Training site. He joked that he was proud to have a parking lot "street" named after him, there. Went back to the office and told my boss: "hey, I met Harmon Killebrew over my lunch hour" and he was floored.

Nice story. If you ever make it to the Mall Of America, the road immediately to the west of it is Killebrew Drive, right where Met Staidum used to be.

Luckily, (under the circumstances), the Twins where scheduled to play in Arizona tonight, so the Twins organization charted a couple of buses for twins members to make it to the funeral this morning. Gardenhire, Mauer, Morneau and Cuddeyer are some of the pallbearers.

RIP, Mr. Killebrew.
