I originally intended on posting this in my "Talk to Myself" topic, but figured it might create a little discussion, so why the hell not here? :P For those wondering, I'm still working my way through the 2001 World Series box set, and have already touched on a few things from it, but one player who stands out in particular has to be Curt Schilling. First, I would like to keep alive his comment before the World Series started that "Mystique and Aura" were a night-club act, when asked about that of Yankee Stadium. What an ass. As much of an ass I think Schilling is for his political views and his diarrhea mouth sometimes, I think he's one of the pitchers from my time watching baseball who scared the shit out of me every single time the Yankees played against his teams. When the late 90's Yankees played the Phillies in Interleague, I didn't want to see it because I knew we wouldn't win. When the 2001 World Series came, Schilling dominated. 2004 ALCS? The fucking bloody sock game. No other player, ever, has had that much of a long-lasting pure dominance over my team. Basically I'm saying as much as I think he needed to shut the hell up most of the time he opened his mouth, he was one of the best pitchers during the peak of his career. Edit: Also forgot to mention all Schilling's work with various foundations and charities over the years. It's stuff like that that always bugs me and doesn't get recognized, but you can't sell newspapers and online web subscriptions with news like "Schilling gives money" instead of "Schilling calls out Gary Thorne for being an idiot." |

Sorry, but I thought "mystique and aura" was a great line. If nothing else, it's such an "Anti-Bob Costas" comment. Schilling was sorta' like the Shannon Sharpe of baseball. Sharpe would say things about the other team to rile them up. Before Super Bowl 33, he was asked about the Atlanta Falcons' tight end, O.J. Santiago. The question was: "what's your opinion on Santiago"? Sharpe responded: "Benito? He's still playing?" Stuff that pisses you off if he's not on your team... but you think it's humorous if he's on your team. Sharpe brought his act back to Denver when he was with the Ravens. Same thing, but different team, and suddenly everyone thought he was a dick. But like Sharpe, Schilling could go out and back it up. That's the thing about Schilling, he was a competitor. Sure, at the end of the 2001 World Series, he got up there and said: "this will NOT be the last World Series trophy for Arizona". Turns out, it WAS... but you really can't blame Schilling for saying that at that particular time. If a pitcher with, say, the Royals had the same antics of Schilling, we would've forgotten all about him. The fact that Schilling ran his mouth off -- AND won --made him memorable. |

The Mystique and Aura comment was pure jerk-off and it was kind of humorous because, like you said, he knows how to ruffle feathers. I loved the sign in the crowd for Game 5 of that World Series "Mystique and Aura Appearing Nightly." Damn, that was a great World Series. Not that I like referencing Major League II, but you got me thinking to the scene with Bob Uecker talking about the new prima donna catcher the Indians signed, showing off and just being a complete jackass. He's like "it's funny how your opinion changes with the new uniform" then quietly says with hand over microphone "He's still a dick." |
