Gilbert seemed like a pretty big deal for the NWA going into 1989. Luger had flamed out, Dusty was gone, Nikita was gone, Bigelow wasn't exactly full-time, so the only other big face was Stinger. But as soon as Steamboat returned, Gilbert kinda' got lost in the shuffle.

Gilbert was really mis-cast in the NWA. He was okay as the underdog babyface but that's not what he's good at.

You also had Junkyard Dog, Michael Hayes, Rick Steiner, Midnight Express and Dick Murdoch running around as faces. Hayes might be the most boring face ever though.

The Road Warriors are also in the midst of their failed heel run. Very failed heel run.

I had heard about Gilbert for a year or so, as this sneaky guy who threw fire and hung out with Missy Hyatt in UWF or wherever. First time I saw him was on a TBS weekend show, where he cut an interview basically kissing the collective tushies of every babyface on the roster. Saying how "Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert is here to help".

I remember a fan in the studio yelling: "where's Missy Hyatt?" Think she came in, later on, around the time Scott Steiner joined their little clique and the Steiner Brothers officially became a team. So by the summer, Gilbert was basically the guy who came to the ring accompanied by a set of tits.

--Speaking of Missy, I've watched two episodes of "WCW Worldwide" from 1993 and she seems to be doing an angle where she's a crazed Ric Flair groupie. Ooookay.

As far as mis-cast, I'd say the Midnight Express as faces is another. Stan Lane and Cornette maybe... but not as a team with Eaton.

Michael Hayes had been a top face in World Class exactly a year earlier. But it was more because he was up against the Freebirds and hanging out with Kerry that made him such. Hayes had been a face in World Class before, but his late 87 into 88 run had some novelty appeal. He helped get Steve "Do It To It" Cox over (nickname and all)... a guy who basically vanished after his team with Hayes died down. It proved that there were certain angles or characters that could only get over in the Sportatorium.

The Midnights really didn't change their act too much. They're still who they are, they're just getting cheers instead of boos. They don't seem groveling like other faces do.

More NWA.

Michael Hayes vs. Russian Assassin #2 was a surprisingly watchable and fun match.

I watched/transferred the original PPV broadcast of SummerSlam '88, last night. I had forgotten that Macho Man and Hogan actually had matching togs for the main event. Both even had "Mega Powers" on the back of their trunks.

Liz's de-skirting rocked my world at 14, but now Hot Chix in wrestling have become so commonplace that it's no big deal. Back then, the appeal was that the prim and proper cute chick had suddenly gone "bad girl". I was half-expecting that to be her gimmick and that all future Macho Man/Liz matches to involve some sort of garment removal from her. But they didn't go that route.

I compare it to Stacy Keibler in 2000. When she first hiked up her pants, let her hair down and got all slutty, it was kinda' hot. But she instantly started doing that EVERY frickin' week until 2005 or so, and it got old really quick.

Just another reminder that women can...gasp...keep their clothes on and still be hot.

Planning to sit down, this afternoon, and watch WrestleMania... umm, whatever last year's version was numbered.

Yup...27 it is. Although, tell that to the announcers. It's just "WrestleMania" (no numbers) to them.

First 6 minutes were nothing but The Rock standing at the entrance ramp, listening to cheers.

Alberto Del Rio reminds me a little bit of Ric Flair. Just a little bit.

One of my lasting memories of Wrestlemania 27 is Rock's stupid-ass grin in the opening segment. Also, John Morrison's shit-eating grin after winning a match he was never tagged in to.

One of my lasting memories of Wrestlemania 27 is the audience waiting for The Rock to interfere.

Read something, somewhere, from a fan who was at WrestleMania IV (1988 title tourney). He said that the ring announcer never mentioned who won the big Hogan-Andre rematch in the second round. Most fans in the audience thought that Andre had been disqualified and that Hogan had advanced; when both had been DQ'd.

The crowd didn't know about the double DQ until Ted DiBiase came down for his semi-final match and the announcement was made. DiBiase seemed to get a lot of heat and boos (well, as much as that lame crowd could manage), so that makes sense.

Steamboat's family man act really is lame. It doesn't make you want to root for him at all.

Gilbert got taken out hard on a episode or two ago. Windham held him face down on the cement and Flair dropped a knee to the back of his head. Nice touch of brutality.

The build for Chi-Town is kind of weird as they've really only built Steamboat/Flair and Varsity/Roadies. Luger and Windham have been advertised for the show but they haven't interacted at all.

As much as people claim Steamboat would've been an awful heel, he sure did have a mean streak with his vengeance act he did WITH EVERY FEUD EVER. If he can throw referee's down and beat the crap out of someone to the point of Disqualification, he could've been a heel.

Who wants to play a game of "worst period of someone's career"? I was thinking about the Undertaker, and how awful, even as a mark, I found his "Biker Taker / American Badass" to be unbareable, and his matches mostly unwatchable. I guess he "freshend" up when he turned heel by the end of 2001, but then he became the "This Is My Yard" douche, and that was more annoying than sucky.
