I didn't either. I always assumed he go let go in that culling where guys like Eaton got let go. It says that it was an accident and he got run over by Juvy and Psicosis. This is new information to me too. |

I googled it. Seems like it was in the parking lot and Juvi was the driver |

I don't know why I'm thinking about it, but I had Survivor Series 96 on my mind. It might be the first card where I was smartening up. 1. The Free For All 8-Man was a bunch of bad gimmicks, and it was obvious why most of them were in the spot they were. 2. Doug Furnas and Phil LaFon win their match. They didn't get the biggest push like I expected, but at least got one PPV title match before a serious car accident sidelined them for a while. 3. Rocky Maivia debuts and wins his match. He seemed like Vince was in love with him. I expected him to get an unbeaten streak like an Alex Wright (young and decent looking dude) 4. Flash Funk debuts and doesn't win. I wasn't expecting much moving forward and wasn't surprised when he was a go-nowhere undercard guy. 5. Bret pins Austin basically ripping off the finish from Mania 8, and I clearly noticed and called attention. Maybe that's not being "smart", but noticing a recycled finish, no matter how good, should count. 6. Undertaker vs. Mankind. Again. As a youngster, I really hated their matches except for the Boiler Room Brawl, which I now consider their worst. Go figure. |

I was always a fan of Furnas and LaFon. To this day I'm surprised they never got a run with the WWF belts considering they pushed them hard during late 96/early 97. |

They had a pretty strong run in All Japan. Furnas was also fun whenever he would pop up in SMW between tours. |

They also had a cup of coffee as ECW tag champs right after the WWF run. Overall solid team no matter what promotion they were in. |

I think they would have been perfect for WCW around 1993 or 1994. 1996-1997 would have been a bad time for them. I think Can-Ams vs. Faces of Fear would have provided some fun matches though. |

After typing up my last Prime Time October '86 recap, decided to seek out some more late 1986 WWF stuff. Watched some "Superstars" and "Challenge" episodes from October and November. -Weird how Captain Lou manages his "retirement" match, twice. On "Superstars", he managed the Machines (Super and Big), who lost to Big John Studd and King Kong Bundy, cleanly. On the same weekend, over on "Challenge", he managed the British Bulldogs to a win over the Dream Team. After that match, he has a champagne shower in a locker room celebration. There were rumors that Albano did something inappropriate, backstage. I've heard something about either Shane McMahon or Stephanie being involved, but don't really care about specifics. Anyways, what adds meat to these rumors is that Albano's retirement is kinda' downplayed on "Superstars"... Vince's show. After losing, Vince says something: "his career did not end as expected. He'll be a legend". Then it abruptly cuts to the next segment (I think it was a Honky Tonk "Vote of Confidence" promo). So just like that, Albano's gone. Over on Gorilla's show, the B-show "Challenge", he gets a somewhat more proper send-off. -The Can-Am Connection debuts and the ladies (and maybe some guys) are instantly into them. Tom Zenk is billed as "Tom Zinc", too. -The "King" gimmick for Harley Race really seems to piss off fans. -Honky's "Vote of Confidence" stuff is funny. "I'll still kiss babies and shake hands..but make sure you wash 'em, first, because ya'll stink. The Honky Tonk Man likes to stay clean". -Quick Piper's Pit, where Piper's seconded by all the WWF officials. Hulk Hogan's the guest and he makes peace with Piper by thanking him for ending the Flower Shop. They don't shake hands, but it's basically giving Piper the Hulkster Seal of Approval. -They seemed to have more of an effort to give out one or two "feature matches" on the weekend shows, at least initially. |

I can't put my finger on it, but Vince sounds WAY worse calling matches in late '95 than he did just a couple of years earlier. Best I can tell, it's a combination of 1.) lack of over talent, 2.) lack of "audio sweetening, and 3.) so-so chemistry with Lawler and J.R, and 4.) not knowing any of the moves. Whatamanuever isused frequently unless it's a hoss match, and even then he can't call a belly-to-belly suplex properly for Mabel. |

Vince gradually gets worse over time. If you watch the stuff from the late 70s, he's great calling matches by himself for MSG. I think he felt he needed to punch it up more and more as time progressed. His 1995 is overcompensation for how awful the product is. Albano does pop up a few months later during the Andre saga on Piper's Pit. But he wasn't active in wrestling until the UWF kicked off in 1991. The featured matches kind of come and go into 1987. Usually if you get a mildly interesting match you know Danny Davis is going to ref it and fuck it all up. Speaking of which, holy shit did that angle drag on way too long. You kind of start living for the Saturday Night's Main Events to break up the drag that Superstars and Wrestling Challenge become after awhile. It's easy to knock out a bunch of episodes in a row but it can sure be boring. |

The bulldogs match was his final match as a wrestler He teamed with them against the dream team and Johnny V (dream team's manager) I remember it well. Cause the bulldogs crushed valiant at the end Albania was never tagged in until the end to get the pin on Johnny V The reason I remember was my dad was still watching wrestling at this point And he laughed cause Albano hooked the leg when getting the pin. Cause he certainly didn't need to |

Ahhh! Due to Lou's extremely low participation, I mis-remembered it as simply Bulldogs vs. Dream Team (no Lou or Johnny V). So in that case, he had two "retirement" matches. One as a manager and one as a wrestler. That makes perfect sense. Thanks. |

Furnas and LaFon were pushed hard, right of the gate, and I remember there was a lot of fan buzz about them on the old "WWF on AOL". It seems like they would've been the team to knock-off Owen and Bulldog, who were tag champs at the time. Or, at least have a somewhat high-profile feud with them. They were building the Owen/Bulldog dissension angle in early 1997, so it would've fit. Furnas/LaFon seemed to fizzle out in early 1997, though (for the reasons you mentioned). Then the Hart Foundation angle came up and the whole Bulldog/Owen thing was scrapped. |
