Luger was just a "WCW guy" and I think that was the problem. He just never connected with WWF fans. Watching the 1989 NWA has really changed my views on Luger though. He's fucking awesome as a heel in 1989. |

Watching the Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels Greatest Rivals DVD, and 2-minutes in, I just can't stand how the name "World Wrestling Federation" is no longer mentioned by name. The narration says "WWE" while a screen with the words "WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION" are prominently featured. |

I watched the Vader vs. Kane match from right before Wrestlemania in 1998. Wow, that was a solid match and the crowd was going apeshit every time Vader started making his comebacks. He went for the Vaderbomb and the crowd just popped huge. |

Despite his jobbing to everything walking, I still was digging Vader in '98. I had no hopes for him to get a serious push at any point from the Fall of '97 on, but still held out hope he wouldn't lose every match. :P I'd comment on the "Kane being over, big time" factor, but my obvious bias might cloud my memory... but Kane was red hot at that point, too. |

The match is on Youtube and is pretty good. The crowd was red hot for the match too. This isn't the mask vs. mask match from Over the Edge I'm talking about though. |

That mask vs. mask stip' from Over The Edge was a pretty dumb idea. 1. A lot of fans have seen Vader unmask himself countless times in WCW (I know, I know... WWF Universe) and his "scars" from the wrench shot at No way Out (of Texas) were non-existant, and 2. Kane wasn't losing to Vader, no matter what. This was my 13 year old versions reasoning, too. It was a lame, throw-away stipulation, when "Grudge Match" was all it needed. Sifting through my WWE DVD's, and popped in Disc 2 of the World Title Set... other than excessive recycling bugging me, I was watching Warrior/Hogan, and got to thinking: Warrior is damn near gassed just from his entrance, and still had to work a 25-minute match. I wonder if anyone thought at WM VII "hey, this guy better not do that again for this match with Savage", since that had far more action than the WM VI match with Hogan. |

I completely forgot how dumb the Double J character was when he first debuted... an aspiring country singer, using the WWF to springboard his music career, and rebrand the WWF the "Double J-F"? Not to mention his outfits that made him look more like a clown than Doink. Who'da thunk all he needed for heat was Brian Armstrong interfering in his matches? |

Thoughts on the Bret/Shawn Rivals DVD... Documentary/Interview: Was as entertaining as I hoped it would be, but it felt like it could've been a little longer. A good chunk of time was obviously devoted to the Montreal incident, of course. When it came down to the "shoot comments", it seems like Bret came across more of a jerk than Shawn, at least the way they recall it. Among other things, Bret said Shawn's parents should be ashamed to have him as their son, which I guess spawned the "Sunny days" comments in retaliation. Shawn seemed personally upset about it, to which Bret was like "it was just an angle", then when Shawn started responding, Bret was all "well, that was personal and he shouldn't have said it." You can tell when they were talking about some of their issues from 1997, it was a little uncomfortable. Shawn kept talking about how all he wanted was Bret to give him the pat on the back he wanted, and Bret was kind of being the stuborn jackass about things, and kept twisting it into a "well, he wouldn't put me over, and that's all I wanted." In short, I feel like this swayed me a bit towards feeling for Shawn, even though professionally, he knew he was a jerk. Bret told a story of Shawn saying he only wanted to work with his friends, to which Shawn replied "I don't remember saying it, but knowing how I was then, I probably did." Extras: Rockers vs. Hart Foundation - From 11/89 MSG card. It's a good match, but I just couldn't get into too much. Bret vs. Shawn - From 2/90 episode of Challenge. It's a 5-minute DDQ feature. Cool for rarities sake. Rockers vs. Hart Foundation - From 3/30/91 WWF/SWS card. Didn't watch. Ladder Match for the IC Title - From the Smack'em Whack'em Coliseum Video. It's still a pretty good match, with more on psychology than using the ladder as a weapon for intense bumps. Random IC Title Match - Pulled from another ColiseumVideo, I think Invasion of the Bodyslammers. Had a B.S. finish. **-ish stuff. Survivor Series '92 Title Match - Pretty good, but a little dull at times. Sorry for the abreviated comments, but a lot of these I've recapped before. Cage Match - Pulled from a Coliseum Video that I can't recall. Uninspired stuff for the most part, with pretty bad commentary from Monsoon and Johnny Polo. **-ish again. Ironman Match from WrestleMania XII - I honestly don't think it's an all-time classic/5-star match, but it's a better match than I usually give it credit for. The structure is well paced with smooth transitions, and the continuity of the neck/back work from Bret from start to finish, along with some great spots peppered throughout, makes it probably the second-best WWF match of 1996. I could've gone for a few falls though, or at least have Bret slap the sharpshooter on during OT, and having Shawn find a way to escape. |

Jarrett had a really shitty gimmick but he made it work. And if you go back to that awesome Michaels/Jarrett match, it was Jarrett leading the match the whole way. |

Have had an itch to watch some fancam shows. Most of the shows I have access to are WWF cards from 1994, but figured to do short comments on the ones I can find myself to sit through. WWF @ San Jose, CA - January 14th, 1994 (Missing I.R.S. vs. Bob Backlund, don't know if it was actually recorded or not. Also, I recognize the ring announcer as the one that worked for the American Wrestling Federation... I really should finish the last 5 episodes of that DVD set.) 1. The Bushwhackers vs. The Headshrinkers - Starts JIP, with the 'Shrinkers working the heat segment. Watchable, considering it's the Bushwhackers, but I have two complaints: 1. When Butch tries to save Luke from a beating outside the ring, WHY THROW HIM BACK INTO THE RING, IN THE HEADSHRINKERS CORNER?! 2. When Fatu is cheating from the apron "behind the referee's back", the referee is clearly looking in his direction while trying to sell an argument from Samu. 2. The 1-2-3 Kid vs. Diesel - Very fun, energetic big man/small man match. Diesel gave the Kid a considerable amount of offense before crushing him like a bug and winning with the snake eyes/whatever the move is where he drops the guy face-first onto a turnbuckle pad. 3. Bret Hart vs. Double J - Lost interest about halfway through. A lot of resting, and really felt flat. There's a bullshit finish, too, because Bret Hart couldn't get a pinfall victory over a guy scheduled for a program with Doink. Went nearly 20-minutes, too. 4. Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels - Ladder Match, and while obviously nowhere near the quality of the WrestleMania X match, this one was pretty good, with a little too much "everyone play dead"towards the last 5 minutes. The ladder was smaller than usual, so their was minimal amounts of both men climbing at the same time. I could always do without Shawn having his ass exposed. 5. Randy Savage vs. Crush - Falls Count Anywhere, with the 60-seconds to return to the ring stipulation added. Savage gets a quick fall in the ring and pushes Crush to the floor, but Crush wakes up. Crush wins a couple of falls, but Savage makes it back in. Then after about 10-minutes, it starts to drag, and hits a dead spot with a bearhug. Crush finally pins Savage in the aisle, and a assist from Ludvig Borga helps him defeat Savage. 6. Lex Luger & Tatanka vs. Yokozuna & Ludvig Borga - Really not good. It's watchable, but it's a poor main event when Tatanka is the best worker in the ring with four men. |

I think Luger is probably a slightly better worker than Tatanka. |

I've been watching a lot of old tv lately. I need to do some arena shows or switch to Raw. I think I've watched almost all squash matches or tv level main events all year thus far. |

I've been watching 1985 Championship Wrestling and it's the Boston version of the show. So they run promos for the Boston Garden all the time. It's a lot of fun. |

I would consider Lex Luger, pre-WWF, a good enough worker to work at the level of his opponent, but boy did he get lazy in the WWF, so mediocre-at-best Tatanka wins out for me. Then heel-Tatanka was even worse than unmotivated/lazy Luger, so it all balanced out by the end of '94. :P |
