The WWF was pretty bad in 1998. WCW had issues but there was a greater wealth of good workers there whole the WWF roster was really thin. |

I just watched a really good Glacier/Chris Addams match from WCW Saturday night on YouTube the other night. I guess it was technically a rematch, as the previous episode saw both men get counted out off of duel/dual super kicks. And get this; Chris Addams actually freaking won! I never knew Addams, jobber that he was, ever beat a "name" guy in his run there. |

So, I just started compiling a list for when I do my Top 10 matches of the year in about two months. If I were to post the list right now, it seems like kind of a sad list. Now there are a few key events and matches that I've heard a lot of buzz for that I haven't seen yet (like the 4-way from Destination X, a couple of ROH iPPVs) but there is very little net buzz for much of anything this year. Do any of you have suggestions for some great matches that I might have missed? |

Adams actually picked up more wins than you would think. He was part of that Regal stable in 1999. |

Yeah. Never knew he had some decent wins in WCW. Best I remember was a reversed decision (win by DQ) against Macho Man on "Thunder" in January 1998 or so. I think Adams was in a low-leel program with Glacier because Glacier bragged that he had the best reverse-thrust kick with his "Cryonic Kick". Eventually, (Perry) Saturn got involved as well. Probably culminated in a match on "Thunder" around March '98. Yay. Kinda' lame, because Adams really did have the best "Super-kick", but this was probably 10 years past his prime. It was weird how Adams was feuding with Regal in the late summer of 1997 (on "Saturday Night"), then for no real reason joined up with Regal around February 1999. I remember he came to the ring as Regal's partner and said to the camera: "I HATE the USA". I kinda' face-palmed myself at that point, remembering his old World Class Union Jack/Stars n' Stripes ring attire. |

Looking back at the WVW Roster from the late 90's, it was like the breeding ground of wrestlers past their usefulness prime. Guys like Jim Neidhart, Marty Jannetty, Chris Adams, Barry Darsow, the Armstrongs (the list can go on and on), but one always stuck out as odd having around. JOHN FREAKIN NORD. [doHTML]<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/mvTjFkxqbnk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>[/doHTML] WCW had to be scraping the bottom to have everyone possible under contract, considering Nord practically vanished once his stint in WWF ended at the beginning of 1993. |

Nord was probably one of the weirdest moves they made. I think he was gone in about a month. Such a mystery why that t-shirt he was wearing never caught on! "If You don't Like Me... (see back)" "There's Something Wrong With You". Not only is it cheesy, but the "(see back)" instruction is frickin' hilarious. Sayyyyy... wouldn't it be something like that were to pop-up in the old DWS STORE?! Anyways, I remember WCW made a semi-big deal about all these "newcomers" (scrap pile pick-ups) at Starcade '97. They also brought back Greg Valentine, who had been there about a year earlier. Rick Martel was the only one of the bunch who really did anything. He got into an angle with Booker T and eventually won the TV title. Then he got injured and disappeared around late May. Marty Jannetty's appearance cracked me up. He was wearing the same late 80's "Rockers" gear, then later switched to some weird-looking light blue neon get-up. He wrestled one of Raven's flunkies on Thunder and the announcers made a big deal of how "odd" Raven's Flock looked and dressed. They wore flannel and ripped jeans... just like 75% of the crowd! If someone on the street was dressed like Raven it would've been no big deal. But if someone was wearing blue neon like Jannetty, I would've thought they were "odd". I'm guessing they picked them all up to pad out the roster for the additional 3 hours of programming they debuted at the time. |

Jannetty's neon tights and haircut made him look even goofier than the same recycled Rockers tights and poofy 80's hair band. The only "memorable" WCW moment for him was being Jericho's opponent in the match before Jericho recited his list of 1,004 holds. Edit: I completely forgot about Martel's comeback, and didn't even know they dug up Valentine for another run. I found it odd to see him on an episode of Nitro near the end of 1996, smack in the middle of when the nWo wasn't completely watered down. |

You could probably toss the British Bulldog and Jim Neidhart in this bunch. They arrived at the same time, but their connection with Bret Hart wasn't played up too much. Ric Flair got in Neidhart's face to build up a match against Bret at "Souled Out" that year, but after that both guys were left to flounder. Although Bulldog was involved in one of my favorite Thunder moments with Mongo McMichael. "Hey boy, what're you doin? Drinkin' coffee? You don't drink coffee when a MAN's talkin' to ya!'!" *slap* |

The only time I remember watching Neidhart and Bulldog in WCW (1998) was a pretty pointless and incredibly sucky opener at the Fall Brawl PPV. I keep forgetting that Neidhart hung around in WCW in 1993 for a few months, but mostly the B-shows, while Davey Boy got main event pushes against Vader and Sid. I want to say that WCW had Mike Enos and Wayne Bloom under contract at some point, but for the life of me can't remember specifically when. Typical undercard space fillers for the company. |

Was thining of Battle Royal's and Royal Rumble matches, and how over time the predictable nature of main event status performers always winning killed the "anyone can win factor." I remember back in 2005(?) when a WWE Title Match was held under Battle Royal rules, but was changed by McMahon because "Stevie Richards might've won", and the Final Four ended up including Richards. I was like "woah, he's STILL in there?!" before finally seeing him eliminated. It was a breath of fresh air to see something like that, but why not give a lower-on-the-card guy a big win like that, just for the sake of establishing that anyone CAN win, not just "anyone who typically main events the weekly programs." |

When I was still somewhat mark-ish in 2001, I remember reading a column on WrestleLine, where a writer went off about something similar. He mentioned it would've been interesting if Perry Saturn had won the Royal Rumble that year and received the WrestleMania title shot. He spelled out a fantasy scenario, which was pretty realistic. Even included the fact that if Saturn's push wasn't well-received by fans, then his shot could be taken away via some stipulation match; either on RAW or the February PPV. |

I'm surprised WWE has never really gone all Rocky on us with their Rumble winners, yet they constantly recycle "Going the distance" for winning. The underdog storyline is a pretty hard one to fuck up. I don't have the complete list of winners over the years, but I'm sure names like "Orton, Cena, and Edge" have won them. |
