Went ahead and resubscribed to WWE Classics on Demand, after about 5-years since last having the service. For $8, I can think of worse ways to spend it.

Oh my God, I'm watching WWE On Demand, and specifically, the 11-9-98 episode of Raw. I didn't realize the WWF logo wasn't blurred out, and when I heard Jim Ross say "WWF" I almost crapped myself. FINALLY, the letter F is allowed! I'm sorry, I couldn't resist bragging about marking over a fucking letter.

They still do a little smoke n' mirrors with the on-screen graphics that used to say "WWF" at times. If you look closely, you can see some constrained pixels where something like "WWF Tag Team Champions" has been simplified to just "Tag Team Champions".

I may be repeating myself, maybe... but reading over Scrooge's new "Mania" review, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan may have been the biggest asshole babyface. Stuff like: "I love the USA and hate anybody who doesn't" and his usual "get outta' my way" to the referees.

He was tolerable in 1988 when most of his interviews talked about his good eye and he'd just "hooo" and punctuate everything with "tough guy". But from his stupid feud with Dino Bravo and on, he was primarily a jerk.

You know... I don't care what anybody says. The NWO Wolfpac was a great idea and its a shame it didn't lead anywhere.

Think about it; a babyface NWO, made up of NWO Hollywood's elite guys, one of WCW's best solo guys, and Sting. There's so much built in drama and character work that could have come from a group with Kevin Nash as the leader. Somebody who, since his first appearence in the company in 1996, was playing second-fiddle to Hogan, playing his lackey and his "enforcer", before finally getting fed up with winning belts for Hogan and practically wrestling his matches for him and breaking off and doing the "NWO" concept better, hipper, and more badass than Hogan could ever manage.

And then you've got Lex Luger, somebody who, time after time, had been dragged through the mud, beaten half to death, and screwed over by the numbers game of NWO Hollywood finally finding allies powerful enough to make a stand.

And Sting. Well, Sting's the most interesting case. Here's a guy who's been adamantly anti-NWO since its inception, finally, finally realizing he can't do it alone. Fighting both NWO factions is a war on two fronts. A war one man can't win. So, he joins the Wolfpac hoping it'll be the winning side. The "lesser of two evils", as it were.

And Konnan. He's by far the easiest. He's a former Hollywood guy, kicked to the curb and beaten down. The black and white have run roughshod over him. Now, he's going to use his silver tongue and hip-hop inspired promos to infuse the Wolfpac with a hip, fresh feeling, turning the fans to their side.

Now, take those four guys. The elite. Four pieces of a powerful quartet. The Wolfpac are a gang. Blood in, blood out. But, they're not backfighters. They're not cheaters. They're going to take NWO Hollywood apart. Because who knows Hogan better than Nash? Who knows Hogan better than the guy that convinced him to turn in the first place?

Its really the easiest setup in the world. WCW, however, in their infinite wisdom, never took it to its natural conclusion.

Wolfpac vs. Hollywood could've been hot. With a ton of branching storylines and feuds that would've resulted. With "WCW management" holding Goldberg on the leash, waiting for the faction war to grow too out of hand. With Ric Flair and the Horseman watching the NWO vs. NWO war, decrying The Wolfpac for "trying to be too cool. Its not about cool, its about kicking Hogan's ass." leading to things down the line.

So many potential ideas. And a natural endpoint to the entire NWO thing at some point.

The Wolfpac was WCW's "out". Their reset button. And they did nothing with it in the long run.

Just saying.

See, Sting's the issue. The "lesser of two evils" thing really hurt him. Big main event guy; hates all things NWO, but then slips down the card and feuds over the tag team straps with the Giant.

I can see where that was kind of a big deal, though. The Giant was still very much a big deal and main eventer at the time. For that matter, so were Nash and Hall when they had the straps in 1997.

Another thing that hurt was the branding of the Wolfpac-- same NWO stuff, just with red. Drop all "NWO" references and just go with "Wolfpac". Their creative department sorta' came up with a Wolfpac icon; a fairly detailed wolf's head with red and black. Use that, not the red NWO logo.I guess WCW was so in love with their merchandise sales (which admittedly, were a big part of the NWO) and thought red NWO stuff would be like printing money.

Other issues were the injuries and arrival of Warrior. Warrior tried to form his own "anti-NWO", albeit more literally. Sting then got injured around August and that was that.

Then you toss in Goldberg's push and title run-- suddenly the NWO Wolfpac looked like an afterthought. Throw in Roddy Piper, who still had some sort of beef and was being booked in PPV events against the NWO in the spring of 1998. There were also rumors that the Horsemen were going to re-form around March 1998... but dropped when WCW and Ric Flair had their issues (it was all rumors, but I believe the plans were for Flair, Luger, Benoit and Goldberg. Or maybe it was Mongo instead of Benoit. I'm serious).

So I agree that the "Wolfpac" was an interesting idea. But it should've happened months earlier. Like I said earlier (I think), fans were expecting Hall, Nash and Syxx to split off and form the Wolfpac around Fall 1997.

Organizing my DVD collection, and of all the WWE produced sets I have, I can easily say "why do I still have the RVD set?" I'm not that big of an RVD fan, or ECW, and I think the only match that got more than a play or two is the one with Jeff Hardy. I don't remember when exactly this set came out (2004?), but I don't remember liking it all too much, then, either.

I'd say there was still a sense of novelty and intrigue to DVD collections until about 2006 or so. Regardless of who the subject was. I remember badly wanting the WWE "Jake the Snake: Pick Your Poison" DVD for awhile. Before the abundance of quality YouTube stuff and WWE 24/7 (Classics).

I was excited to get the Bret Hart and Ric Flair DVD's that came out, then. Watched the Flair set once, and haven't since. I didn't even finish the Bret Hart DVD and ending up selling it on Half.com, early last year.

Still have "Rise and Fall of ECW", "nWo Back in Black" and "Hulk STILL Rules" taking up space.

I do recall picking up every DVD that came out round that time. I think the LOD, Jake Roberts, Self-Destruction of Warrior and Stars of the 80's all came out within a short time, and getting them all just as fast. Haven't seen too much play time, especially that Roberts set. The documentary is OK, if not really depressing, but the extras are a lazy collection of random.

Finished watching the 11-9-98 episode of Raw on Classics On Demand. Other than the typical "lots of 2-minute matches" and backstage segments, I forgot how into the whole angle surrounding the McMahons, the Rock, Mankind, and Austin I was. Vince fires Austin, Shane turns on his father to hire Austin back, Rock gets over as a face, so Vince takes it out on him, Mankind is the dumbass who believes in Vince backing him as the next champion... and it all turns out to be a big swerve with the McMahon's and Rock working everyone. One of the few times a Russo swerve actually made sense.

I just feel the need to point out one thing to Mr. Scrooge McSuck about his Marty Jannetty article; You missed a MAJOR match from Jannetty's WCW run. Marty Jannetty and Chris Addams vs. Hugh Morrus and The Barbarian. How dare you ignore this epic encounter of WCW's best and brightest? Shame on you.

Also, you missed a match in your Mr. Perfect piece too. For a brief time Mr. Perfect and the Bossman were kind of a thrown together team. They jobbed to the APA in a shockingly solid little match on Jakked/Mettal/Jackyd/Mehtal/Jackked/MehTaL - whatever the hell it was called at the time.

Just thought I'd let you know.

I do remember that Jannetty tag match on an old comp tape I had... I think it was from an episode of Saturday Night. Got to love WCW's randomly thrown together teams. Jannetty and Adams? Thats almost as random as Adams and 2 Cold Scorpio.

I thought I remembered Jannetty involved in a lame angle against the flock, along with Rick Martel and Booker T, in January-February 1998. Not really an official angle, as I think it just involved Jannetty doing a run-in to fight off the flock, after they tried to do a beat-down on Martel or Booker.

They tried all kinds of lame shit to get the flock over. I think they had a 3-way "feud" between Saturn, Chris Adams and Glacier over who had the best super-kick. Played out on Thunder of course.

As much as I hated Raven and the flock, I thought Saturn was pretty bad-ass and the only guy in that group I liked to watch.

With Adams it probably was. I remember Saturn doing a pre-recorded promo about Glacier's "Cryonic Kick", sometime around February-March 1998. The part I distinctly remember is that Saturn had hair, which was from late '97 into about midway through '98.

I think the entire promo was less than 20 seconds.
