I dunno, Rico's spot calling at Survivor Series 2002 was way more funny: COME ON JEFF, GOD DAMMIT! I'm grown to dislike cage matches more and more as years pass. I'm talking "escape rules" kind, where a 20-minute match is milked with nothing but big spot, slow climb, big spot, slow climb, and repeat over and over. Makes me long for the days of, say, Magnum TA vs. Tully Blanchard, where the cage was just to keep them in and others out and let the two of them beat the shit out of each other. |

The only cage match, recently, that I really liked was Kofi Kingston vs. The Big Show from RAW. Good work and perfect for what it was. Big Show looked like an invincible monster (even kicking out of Kofi's finisher) and Kofi looked like a great plucky, underdog. Good stuff all around. |

See, I think "escape rules" cage matches work best when the cage is part of the match. Otherwise, just add a stipulation of "no one can leave the ring" and save yourself the trouble of building a cage. There are some crappy matches where the cage is only used to ram somebody into it*, and then an anticlimactic climb. I'm remembering Warrior vs. Rude at SummerSlam 1990 as an example where you watch and say: "why the cage"? Hogan vs Bundy at WrestleMania II was another. In those cases, it's like they thought: "hmm, we need a stipulation to sell tickets....uhhh... CAGE!" * I kinda' hate how a simple whip-to-the-ropes suddenly becomes: "guy LEAPS into cage, head-first". It's the same move that results in a rebound from the ropes in any other match. |

If the cage is used wisely, then it's fine for me, but it seems there's too much belief in "hanging on the cage for half the match" to fill time. I don't need a 20-minute match when half of it is someone having their leg over the top. I'm trying to think of cage matches I really enjoyed, and am pressed to think of much (From WWF) other than Steiners/Money Inc. from the summer of '93, Bret/Owen from SummerSlam '94, and Kane/X-Pac from Armageddon '99. The latter of three was over-booked as hell, but kept it action filled and at 11-12 minutes. |

The January 1987 SNME cager with Hogan and Orndorff was a pretty good use of the cage. They had done their regular match all over since the summer of '86, so it was a good way to spice up a familiar encounter. I remember seeing a Batista-Chris Jericho cage match for One of the WWE Titles on RAW, sometime in the past 3 years. Around November or December. Had a decent ending...I think. Someone can confirm/deny for me. |

WCW had a really fun cage match between Diamond Dallas Page and Raven. A "Bowelry Cage Deathmatch" which was basically just a cage match with a bunch of weapons and "plunder" for the two to use. But it was a solid match, between two strong mid-card guys on pay-per-view, and two guys with good chemistry at that rate. Fun stuff. I really should go watch it again sometime. |

Finished off the rest of my Survivor Series 1990 tape; all the extra crap that aired on TV, afterwards. Had the entire November 1990 "Main Event", with Warrior's best title defense against DiBiase. For Warrior, it's a great match, only ruined by the outside shenanigans of Sherri and Macho King. It also hurt that it really didn't seem like DiBiase had a prayer of winning. Tape also had the Texas Tornado-Mr Perfect IC title switch from "Superstars". Bummer that Honky Tonk Man is on commentary and doesn't mention being the "Greatest Intercontinental Champion of All Time". It's a very choreographed match and it's something of a shame that Tornado-DiBiase wasn't given a full program. Would've been kinda' neat to see Von Erich/DiBiase in the WWF. It would've been huge in Mid-South or World Class about 5 years earlier. It was over and forgotten within about 3 weeks for the Virgil thing. The tape ends with Koko B. Ware vs. Tito Santana from MSG. That's worth tracking down, not just for the novelty of face vs face, but it's actually an entertaining match. |

That show also had Dean Malenko disguised as Ciclope winning a cruiserweight battle royal and then beating Jericho for the belt. Some huge heat there. |

Looking it up: Slamboree is the show, from May 1998. I LOVED that angle and feud! Jericho continually finding loopholes to screw over Malenko. Great stuff and it really made Jericho into the character he became known for. Half of it was Jericho developing his charisma, but it wouldn't have worked without Malenko. It seems Malenko is kinda' forgotten, nowadays, but damn he was awesome. He's definitely a favorite of mine. Here's the ending of the battle royale and the resulting match. Amazing how Malenko blows the roof off the place without saying a word [doHTML]<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Dpm_KbxyLTI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>[/doHTML] |

WWE Classics on Demand is focusing on the "Attitude era" lately. Tried watching Backlash '99, but my God is it boring/shit. HHH/X-Pac is a dull mess, Undertaker/Shamrock is a horrible clash in styles, and the undercard is feh. Godfather/Goldust as the IC Title Match? Pass. |

Is the Attitude era WWF logo still blurred out on WWE Classics? I didn't mind stuff like the ceiling "Superstars" banner being blurred on old 80's stuff, but having every turnbuckle blurred on the late 90's stuff made it unwatchable to me. A guy would be whipped to the corner and disappear in a blurry cloud. |

Unless it's a DVD release rehashed, the logo and phrase "WWF" are no longer blurred out and censored. All is right in the world... now if WWE can pay for rights to music they don't own. |

Most of WWF Judgment Day 2000 is available on the Classics on Demand. I say most because, predictably, Benoit vs. Jericho has been edited out for "obvious" reasons. In short, the entire show is pretty good, probably the best PPV's from a match quality POV of it's era. The only match I really wanted to make comments on was the Ironman Match between Rock and HHH. I typically am not a fan of Ironman matches. Bret/Shawn from WM 12 has taken me years to build a taste for, but it's not something I can watch without a good 4-5 years between viewings. This one between Rock/HHH... same thing. Different reasons. The pacing is surprisingly fast, but at that expense is excessive breaks of brawling around the ring. I did love that by the halfway mark it was something like 1-1 or 2-1, but then successive falls became the norm, with clever booking decisions. Even Undertaker's return at the end still makes me mark out, even if the timing fell apart for the final fall. |
