Watching the '08 Rumble Match for the first time... it's a bit surreal to see MICHAEL BUFFER doing intros for a WWE show. In a nice nod, his catchphrase is the perfect compliment to the match.

Going through the new Bret Hart "Dungeon Collection" DVD set. The one thing I can say I like more than anything is Bret commenting on each match/person he was working with for each selection, instead of bad narrative or questionable hosts doing it (Matt Striker and Maria on the Randy Savage DVD? ECK!).

That's not to say the matches aren't worth checking out, either. I've only skipped around, but there's a match against Dynamite Kid from the Cap' Centre, against Mr. Perfect from Maple Leaf Gardens Spring '89, a nice rarity against Andre the Giant from Italy in Spring '89, another random pull from MSG circa' January '92 against the Undertaker, and more.

Watching the match against Diesel from KOTR '94, and other than NOT being used to hearing "WWF" still, I forgot how much of a trainwreck Art Donovan was that night, but major, MAJOR kudos to Randy Savage being a professional, treating him with some respect, while Gorilla mostly ignored him.

Popped King of the Ring '93 in the player, and the only thing I can really say, other than "Bret Hart had 3 great matches", was that I'm glad they went with Bret vs. Perfect instead of the traditional face/heel match with an uncarriable Mr. Hughes. Reminds me of WM IV, when Savage vs. Steamboat II was an obvious choice for quality, but in that instance you don't want the new champion possibly being over-shadowed with a babyface reaction for the guy he has to go over.

Watching the Summerslam Spectacular special from 1993. Fun tidbit: I had this recorded on a tape along with SummerSlam, as a nice lead in, and watched the hell out of that tape more than any other in my collection. I remember watching it live, and the Steiners/Money Inc. Cage Match blew my mind, it was that awesome. It still holds up today, but unfortunately doesn't really get much press when it comes to great cage matches, especially with that sucky blue-bar cage.

The rest of the card features a surprisingly good match with Duggan/Yokozuna, another more surprisingly good 6-man tag with the Gunns/Tatanka against jobbers Brawler/Horowitz/Riggins, and even decent efforts out of Razor/Blake Beverly and Michaels/Backlund. In an era without Primetime Wrestling, local cards on MSG, or any other shows consisting of mostly features, these PPV specials were still pretty big deal to me in 1993. (See also: Survivor Series Showdown, March to WrestleMania)

Link to Rowe's recap of the show:

I for the life of me couldn't find it on da' site, but google linked me to it. Maybe the lack of sleep is getting to me.

Crap. It's under the old structure of Da' Site, when we still had the (worthless) "flashback" vs. "current" split. You'll also note that it's not under the "WWE" folder. There may be a few more like this that I need to recover and move-over.

Would this be best located under the "Prime Time Wrestling" folder, even though PTW had died in January '93?

I would say it would be best. "Other" would be a good secondary choice, but that seems more suitable for random stuff like compilations and Indy promotion PPV's.

We have the WWF/WWE "Miscellaneous" section, too:

So whatta' ya' think, sirs?

EDIT: Just did a YoutTube search for "All-American Wrestling". Egads! Make sure you include the term "WWF" to filter out some of the male-on-male stuff.

Totally forgot about that one. You know I'm bored or low on ideas to recap episodes of All-American Wrestling. :P

Ayumi Kurihara is retiring this year. Kind of stinks, she's been one of my favorites in the past year. She's retiring young, like Cindy Rogers a couple years ago.

Her retirement match is on August 4 in Tokyo. Her last appearance with Shimmer is April 6 for Shimmer 53 on iPPV.

Thought of something while publishing Scrooge's latest Prime Time review: during the usual PPV hype "Report" segments, Mean Gene would usually say something like: "call and order today! Don't be shut out!"

Did anybody ever get shut-out from ordering a PPV? He always made it sound like you had to order the event well in advance, otherwise there was a chance you wouldn't be able to see it for...whatever reason.

In all seriousness, was something like bandwidth ever a concern in the late 80's? Did cable companies only have so many "tickets" or slots to view a PPV event?

I remember never ordering the PPV until the night before. I think the charge didn't show up on your cable bill until the actual event date. Although for WrestleMania IV, I think we ordered it well over a month in advance; maybe as soon as it was announced. I remember we had an older cable box and had to go out to the office to get it exchanged, then ordered WMIV in-person. Sheesh.

I remember KOTR '96 not going through for us until 15 minutes before the PPV started, despite ordering it a week or so in advance (we missed half of the New Rockers/Body donnas epic classic on the Free For All!). Typically we ordered them as soon as the add appeared on the preview channel. I guess PPV technology ran the risk of blacking out, or just a scare tactic to make people order the show, incase they would have second doubts.

On top of Ayumi Kurihara retiring from Shimmer last weekend, Allison Danger is hanging up the boots this upcoming weekend after the Shimmer tapings.

While waiting, watched a random CWA (Memphis) show from 1978. Opening match had Wayne Ferris and Handsome Jimmy Valiant against two jobbers. After that, Lance Russell interviewed Valiant about how he's now "into the music business", because he just got back from MSG where he performed with Bob Seger.

This led to a video clip from Valiant singing...well, I guess his theme song. Talking about how he was raised by gypsies and is on the prowl for women.

Wrestlers doing "music videos" or having a musical connection didn't really get popular until World Class in the 80's, but Memphis usually seemed to be the leader in this type of fluff. Valiant was a terrible wrestler, but I can't think of anyone who seemed to be having more fun in the ring than him.

Hilarious moment; I just got blocked by the immortal Tony Schiavone, who is now a baseball play-by-play announcer for Tweeting this little gem at him;
