I love variety, and love how deep WCW rosters were at times, but at the same time, how much can casual WCW fans/marks care for the foreign imports like a Nagata or the majority of Cruiserweights? It's not like WCW Really gave reasons, either. So many names passed through in only a few years, and it's hard to remember any of it. |

Didn't WCW have a working relationship with Japan for years? That explains a lot of the Japanese guys they got in for a cup of coffee. They even had Japan's NWO guys in for a few shows, on and off. As a matter of fact, there's a match on YouTube with the NWO branded Great Muta jobbing to The Giant in sub 5 minutes. Also, funny story. I was watching the 1995 edition of World War 3 once and my buddy came over to look. He said, because of all the bright outfits and cartoony characters at the time, that the 1995 WW3 match looked like a "confetti factory exploded". That made me laugh. |

In the official "WCW Era" (post-JCP, 1988 on), they did indeed have a working relationship with Japan. Which is why Jushin Liger would occasionally appear, among others. Plus the Road Warriors had been going over to Japan for significant amounts of time, back in the 80's. There's an episode of Thunder from early 1998, where a whole load of NWO Japanese dudes pop-up. Along with their "good guy" opponents. Like the guy who had the Japanese character for "Dog" spray-painted on his back. Tenzan was an nWo guy and hung around with the US nWo for about a week, at the time. Save from winded explanations from Mike Tenay, there was no real rhyme (or build-up) to their arrival. I guess they strategy was: "we don't need to properly introduce them, we'll just have Tenay talk about them on commentary". They kept doing stuff like this even up through 2000. Liger appeared randomly on "Thunder" in January 2000, plus Masa Hiro Chono and Super J (nWo Sting/Cobra) appeared as "Team 2000" in late '99. They'd also get Tenay to fill us in on the lucha guys, too. Like his explanation of Super Calo's dress code, or the correct pronunciation and description of "Ultimo Dragon" vs. "Ultimate Dragon". A few times, it's acceptable, but "The Tenay Introduction" was used way too often by WCW in the Nitro days. It was especially tough, because as a fan, you never knew who was going to stick around. Some guys like Ultimo Dragon, Yuji Nagata and even Tokyo Magnum stuck around. But guys like Muta, Chono, Gedo and Yuji Yasuraoka would come and go with no build-up or explanation. |

WCW had a roster of probably 100 guys at the time. WWF probably had 60 or so back then |

The only cruiserweights of Mexican descent that they pushed were Rey Misterio, Eddie Guerrero, Juventud Gurrera and Psychosis. Konnan and La Parka Were heavyweights. Guys like Super Calo, Halloween/Ciclope, Hector Garza, Lizmark Jr, Silver King, El Dandy and the Villanos were basically jobbers. I'm sure there a couple of others I am missing But overall with other cruiserweights like Malenko, Jericho, Alex Wright, Disco Inferno, Kidman, the division was pretty solid. |

Tokyo Magnum... That dude was great. I loved his run as Disco Inferno and Alex Wright's little gopher. Disco and Wright had a "Philadelphia By Way of Sturgis, South Dakota Street Fight" with The Public Enemy at Road Wild 1998 and Magnum constantly tried interfering and hurting himself in increasingly painful ways. Funny shit. Also, completely random thought; It seemed pretty rare back in the day to see WCW's bigger name guys work with any cruiserweights. Understandable, because WCW made cruiserweights into their own division. They tended to stick to wrestling each other. But, there's one completely random, oddball match I need to find again. On WCW Worldwide, Randy Savage wrestled Ultimo Dragon in a winning effort, but not before giving Ultimo a pretty solid bit of offense. Its really weird. Probably the only time those two ever worked each other in a wrestling match. |

Ultimo vs. Savage sounds like an extremely rare match-up. I can remember Lex Luger taking on La Parka, once, circa 1997. Total squash and I figured it was because La Parka was one of the larger "cruiserweights". You're right--for the most part the cruiserweights (lucha and Japanese guys) seemed to stay away from the WCW big names. They could have been a completely separate promotion. It seemed only Dean Malenko and Rey Mysterio had the magic hall pass that enabled them to criss-cross divisions. Syxx did it for a little bit in 1997. Jericho seemed to mix it up with both divisions, too. Kinda' annoyed some fans, because it was like: "why should we care about Lizmark Jr vs. El Dandy"? I always thought that one reason Rey became so popular was because of his "dart" segment with Kevin Nash in the early days of the nWo. I know that's a huge reason I became a fan of his. He was probably the first "cruiserweight crossover star" for WCW. Eddy Guerrero came in mixing it up with the big names (I remember he wrestled Flair on Nito in late 95 or early 96), so I don't really count him. |

Don't forget Benoit in that group of cruisers who mixed it up with bigger names. Well, at least WCW wanted people to think he was a cruiser, but the lines were always sort of blurred with him. WCW magazine ran an article regarding midcard guys "who were the future of the company" and what they said about Benoit as a weakness was "he can't decide if he's a cruiserweight or a heavyweight." So, somebody there seemed to realize it. |

Watched the original Royal Rumble (Rumble match only) again, last week. It's different from the ensuing Rumbles, because the match doesn't really get going until the ring fills up around #8. From the last 10 spots, it's just an ongoing battle royal, with about 8-12 guys in the ring at any given time. It's crazy how the crowd gets riled whenever anybody gets hoisted onto the ropes for a possible elimination. -The first 6 spots or so are basically "the EVIL Hart Foundation vs. the Heroic Tito Santana". Harts vs. Strike Force was just about to get stale at this point -Danny Davis still had a lot of heat, as there's a big pop when he's eliminated -Don Muraco does a pretty good job as the #3 babyface in the mix (I'd score Hacksaw as #2) -#1 babyface in the match was probably Jake Roberts, who was insanely over. "DDT" gets chanted a lot -Never noticed that the managers were allowed at ringside |

Edge and Beth Phoenix just had a baby girl together, so congratulations to them. I knew Phoenix was helping Edge recover from neck surgery, I didn't know if their relationship went any farther, but I guess this news answers that question. |

Can't believe I'm feeling nostalgic watching WrestleMania XIX. This was probably the height of my displeasure with WWE at the time, because I distinctly remember not enjoying the show watching it live. I'm pretty sure I was more into the weekly NWA-TNA PPV's at the time than the WWE product, and who can blame me? Triple H telling Booker T "people like him aren't good enough to be Champion?" Hogan vs. Vince as the headlining match (look at the DVD cover)? The MILLER LIGHT CAT FIGHT GIRLS bumping Kane, RVD, and Lance Storm to the Sunday Night Heat match? Maybe I'll do a quickie recap, after all. |

So, I've been watching some old school WCW shows from 1991/1992 on The Network. Its been working fairly well so far. One funny thing, though. There was a tag team match with Dustin Rhodes and Barry Whendam wrestling some combination of The Dangerous Alliance. Dustin hit a spring back flying elbow out of the corner during a comeback sequence that really surprised me. It surprised me, because Dustin had never really used that move before or after. That is, until his current run. He busted the same move out during a comeback sequence against The Outlaws or Rybaxel or someone now in a more recent match. Its amazing to think that Dustin actually is actually, in his middle-40's is busting out moves he barely used when he was in his 20's. Dustin's comeback might be the best return in recent memory. Also, watching old-school WCW has given me a real appreciation for Steve Williams and Terry Gordy. I just watched the Great American Bash '92 where Williams and Gordy had a couple solid matches with Ricky Steamboat and Nikita Koloff and Dustin and Whendam. I dug both matches, but Steamboat and Koloff really felt like an extended 20-minute squash. The match with Dustin and Barry felt like a good old fashioned, smash mouth style Southern tag-team match. Four tough guys, all ex-football players, beating the shit out of each other. Pretty awesome stuff. I'm up to Halloween Havoc '92 now. With the Steve Williams/ Steve Austin dream team, Ron Simmons defending his title against, of all people, The Barbarian, Vader squashing Nikita Koloff, and Sting vs. Jake Roberts in the infamous coal miner's glove match. WCW was an awesome, work rate-centric promotion in the 90's - but hey, they can't all be winners. |
