I never noticed... but Roddy Piper has made a LOT of appearances at WrestleMania in odd, random, and sometimes pointless roles. X: Special Referee. Surprise. XI: Special Referee, again a Surprise XII: Subbed in for Ramon vs. Goldust XIX - Runs in during Hogan vs. McMahon, turns heel... because he was already a face? I don't know, it made little sense 21: Piper's Pit with Austin and Carlito 25: The Legends vs. Jericho Shit Tried talking his way into WM 30. Don't know much about WM's 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, or 29. Maybe he was at some of those, too. |

Add WM5 and WM7 to the list: -WM5- The long, drawn-out, un-funny "Piper's Pit", which did not signal the Pit's return as many had hoped -WM7- Virgil's corner man. I'll give him a pass on that one, since his presence helped sell that angle. |

Looks like he also did a terrible backstage appearance at WM 27, but stuff like that is forgivable. He didn't steal the spotlight in the ring in that case, or milk a segment for too long when it wasn't going anywhere to begin with. |

The WM5 "Pit" sequence may have been one of the lowlights of the first 10 Manias. I know WWE always likes to pull out a quick clip of Piper with the fire extinguisher, but I remember being incredibly psyched for it...then the whole thing tanking before all 3 guys made it to the ring. It was so predictable and it didn't help that it was about 75% Brother Love. At least two separate sequences would've been the way to go. If it had been a "modern" Mania, then having recurring backstage Piper segments and (maybe) two in-ring Pits would've been the formula. Saw a warm-up they did for the WM 5 "Pit", live at a local house show about two weeks prior. I think it was officially Piper's return to a WWF ring as he did essentially the same sequence with Brother Love. Piper had his works boots on (literally) and it ended with them bouncing the ropes and Piper hip-tossing Love. We knew it was a warm-up for WM5 and expected a feud with Love to officially start at the event. Like a new round of "Flower Shop" vs. "Piper's Pit". Then Piper just disappeared after WM5 and wasn't seen until he became co-host of Prime Time in June. As much as I dig Piper, he's had a LOT of stinkers in his career. His Nitro try-out "family" was a fun concept and sounded great on paper, but it had poor execution. |

So it took 9 years but I finally got into a TEW diary big time. I bought TEW 2013 and downloaded a 1983 mod. Playing as Mid-Atlantic and really having fun with it. |

I'm sitting through WCW shows from 1990-91. I made a topic or post a long time ago about bad hometowns and how WCW did it frequently, but two I'm shocked never happened: Z-Man (Tom Zenk) was never introduced from Z-World, and Candyman Brad Armstrong (with candy cane tights and boots) wasn't from Candy Land or Land of Sugar and Sweetness. It's WCW... it could've happened. |

Honestly, I thought they billed him from "Hershey, PA" at one point. I think he had been doing the Candyman gimmick earlier. Like 1988-1989. |

That sounds too normal for WCW. I don't recall much of Brad's stuff from those years so I can't comment, but it's borderline ridiculous by the end of 1990: red and white striped tights, candy cane emblems on his boots, AND throwing candy out to the fans. It's a harmless gimmick for a JTTS that I enjoy poking fun at, but I bet workrate fans at the time who laughed at the goofy WWF were pissing a fit over how increasingly cartoonish WCW was getting with gimmicks, especially giving someone with Brad's abilities (he couldn't talk, but he could work his ass off) such a lame make-over. |

I vaguely remembering watching the NWA World Championship Wrestling (Sunday) show on TBS and they were trying to build up a "Candyman" Brad Armstrong vs. Chris Champion feud, in the late summer of 1988. I remember the R&R Express vs. the Sheepherders was another program they were pushing, so that time seems about right. I thought there had to be some pun or reference-I-didn't-get with "Candyman", but to this day it still makes no sense to me. They could've just as well dubbed him "the Bartender" or "The Flight Attendant" and it would've made just as much sense. Actually, in retrospect, those two nicknames would've worked well! I guess NWA's reasoning was that the gimmick bar had been set pretty low with Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake. |

TEW (forget what it stands for) was Adam Ryland's spiritual sequel game to EWR, which initially cost money to download, but was much more involved. I tried out the free sample once, and while I was impressed with it, felt content to stick with my EWR games. |

I popped in the DVD of Backlash '04 out of protest to WWE's white-washing things on the Network, and because I wanted to watch it on the big screen in the living room... and I guess I didn't expect to feel this way, but the crowd's reaction and the visual of Benoit's family in the front row just ripped my heart out. It sucks. |

... KIM KARDASHIAN was a guest "host" at a WrestleMania?! And yet she's still more likeable than Mr. Kennedy. How the fuck is that possible?! |

Finally converted my '92 Royal Rumble VHS tape to DVD, yesterday. Even though it's over 20 years old, the VHS still delivers a better quality than the DVD. But, the DVD takes up less room, the VHS will eventually wear out, blah blah. And I can always watch it in high-quality on the WWE Network. I'm curious if the show ending montage, set to the tune of RUSH's "Where my Thing" is included in the Network version, though. Anyways, this is still by far my favorite Rumble. Yet I realized that the end segment was kind of a let-down. Rick Martel and Roddy Piper are hugging....when Sid Justice suddenly walks from behind and dumps them over. Then he catches Randy Savage in the corner and basically pushes him over. 3 rather lame eliminations from a good batch of finalists. I get that the main idea was to set-up the Hogan/Justice eliminations and feud..and that's fine. That sequence still works. I never noticed that Flair (or maybe it was Sid) blew Sid's elimination at first. Flair appears to grab Sid's trunks, then loses his grip. He tries again and it works. Both had to modify the spot on the fly. It's a very quick sequence and it still works because Hogan was pulling Sid out of the ring at the same time. I always love Mr. Perfect's post-match celebration with Flair and Heenan. "We hate to be the kind of guys who said: we toldja' so, but.. " (with Heenan, in unison): "WE TOLDJA' SO!!" I used that line in the smart-ass remarks of my teenaged days for about a year. |
