Next time anyone makes fun of Lilian Garcia or any ring announcer other than the Fink, they need to hear this... whoever this guy is at SummerSlam '95 needs to be taken out of the building and shot. AWFUL. For the record, I just picked up the Slam Anthology (Vol. 2) for 3 bucks at a Goodwill and am watching the crap out of it. |

What a weird undercard for Slam '95: No Owen and Yokozuna (Tag Champions), no Bam Bam Bigelow, no Sycho Sid. Bulldog and Luger left off in non-wrestling roles for storyline purposes, and the sudden walk out of Jeff Jarrett and the Roadie weakened the roster further. Heck, not even savior Vega, hot off a KOTR run and semi-midcard push. We're left with the following... 1-2-3 Kid vs. Hakushi - No one is arguing quality, but there's no reason for this to be on the card, storyline wise. Real purpose: The card is pretty weak. Bob Holly vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley - More filler, and it's not very good. Smoking Gunns vs. The Brothers Blu - Surprisingly good, but again, major filler. Barry Horowitz vs. Skip - Not knocking quality, but this is what WWE had come to in 1995: Pushing Jobber Barry Horowitz a good 5-6 years too late, then turning him into a plucky Koko B. Ware level JTTS almost immediately afterwards. Alundra Blayze vs. Bertha Faye - An awful gimmick and an angle that fizzled out months earlier, but was put on hold due to plastic surgery for Blayze (boob AND nose job) Most puzzling of all is clumping all the filler together and all the important matches together at the end, without much of a breather. I guess they didn't anticipate having to "cool down" the crowd for Isaac Yankem DDS or Kama, the Supreme Fighting Machine. I don't mind using talent other than the same 8-10 people, but this is during the days of IYH. Use those for the random undercard guys. |

Putting together compilations for 1995 (yeah... I'm mentally disturbed) and something I didn't get: Yokozuna was taken off TV to get his weight under control. He comes back over 5 months later, FATTER. His reward is a WrestleMania payday and the Tag Team Titles. Meanwhile, Men on a Mission did a very convincing heel turn by whooping on the Gunns and their Manager, Oscar, and are left standing around with their dicks in their hands until someone thought "fuck the Tag Titles, Mabel should be headlining with the WWF Champion." |

The thing is, they still rebounded from it and did a huge number with Flair/Hart and stayed hot through 1998. It's really Nash that killed the company. |

As someone who just popped in here and there, Starrcade was such a huge deal. TV Guide had articles and full page previews for it, and I'm sure there was a huge ad for it in the paper that Sunday. I remember watching Nitro the next night (I never bought a WCW PPV after Fall Brawl '95), and was confused to what happened. Then they did a rematch, and ended the broadcast midmatch. Didn't watch WCW again until the Summer, for another hour, before I was turned off by the complete lack of guidance and respecting the viewers. Even at the age I was, I found it total bullshit to play these weird "ha, let's not show the finish" games. |

Just got back from training! Man I had to do 150 squats, 100 push ups and 100 sit ups. Took several bumps and no words can describe the pain and got to ref whilst the other trainees were doing there spots and got tips from a great trainer. |

I'm putting together more and more compilations for future reviews, and I'm up to the period where everything's a KOTR Qualifying Match (from 1995). Why, in kayfabe reasons, are the matches so lopsided in quality opponents? You have Undertaker vs. IC Champion Jeff Jarrett, British Bulldog vs. Owen Hart, and Lex Luger vs. Yokozuna in three, and then in others... Doink vs. The Roadie Bob Holly vs. Mantaur Duke Droese vs. Kama I'm barely leaving Razor Ramon vs. a Blu Twin, just because the "twins switching" gimmick gives them a kayfabe excuse to compete in a singles match. I'm shocked it took until 2001 for them to do a "previous winner wants to repeat" story (with Kurt Angle). |

The 1993 Qualifiers were kind of like that. You'd have two guys that should be in like Curt Hennig vs. Doink and then two guys that should be jobbing in a Qualifier like Duggan vs. Shango. |

1993 had a bit better balance, just because most matches were obvious results. No one was buying Tito, Backlund, Shango, Kamala, or Typhoon going over in their matches. Tatanka/Gonzales and Doink/Perfect were fair balance in positon on the card, but only the latter had a questionable outcome. I need a life if I'm really dissecting fake tournaments... but Tournaments are AWESOME! |

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wonder where they could go with the Roadie/Double J angle. I don't see potential for a long-term investment, but they put a heck of a lot of effort into the "With My Baby Tonight" video and making sure Jarrett's lip-sync'ing was dang-near perfect. It's a semi-catchy tune too, considering the cheesiness of WWE music and I have a near-strong hatred for Country music. |

Vince McMahon sure said "what a maneuver" a lot, at least in these episodes of Superstars from July '95. |

"Wotta' Maneuver" was usually preceded by "Hammering Away". I know Mad Dog mentioned it earlier, but IMO Vince McMahon got unbearable awful on commentary shortly after WrestleMania 6 in 1990. Got worse when Jesse left in July and he began working with babyface Roddy Piper on "Superstars". Vince was actually the better half of that duo. |

I thought he was still tolerable until 94, when more wrestlers are coming in with "modern" offense, a.k.a anything that isn't a chinlock, punch, or scoop-and-a-slam. Listening to Vince try and call PBP for Hakushi vs. The 1-2-3 Kid is some genuinely hilarious "over his head" commentary. Edit: Vince is ear-bleeding bad for all of 1996 and 97. Worse than Eric Bischoff and Steve McMichael as a team on Nitro. |

Ugh. The summer time blues, indeed. Just look at what I get to sift through, with little hope in sight. Either wrestling or in introductory vignettes... Blu Twins Makin' a Difference Fatu Man Mountain Rock Duke "the Dumpster" Droese Hunter Hearst Helmsley, a.k.a a sad ripoff of Lord Steven Regal Aldo Montoya Henry O. Godwinn (a.k.a HOG) Phantasio Skip jobbing to Barry Horowitz Rad Radford (a.k.a WWF's attempt to parody Grunge Rock) Isaac Yankem (pronounce YAN-kem, not YANK-um) |
