Breaking away from the compilation set building (Spoiler: 1995 is a really bad year), I'm searching YouTube for whatever catches my eye, and one very long video is a collection of promos that build up to the Punk/Cena MITB Match. It got me thinking how there's been a mostly untapped market for a DVD set: We got it with Bret and Michaels, and then they did the one with the Rock and Cena, but dammit, I would drop the $25 for a DVD that is all the Cena/Punk matches (MITB '11, Slam '11, NOTC '12, and the 2-25-13 Raw) and a bunch of promos that built them up. It's a shame they never got to steal the show at WrestleMania. |

I got a Roku box this past weekend and there's a program Plex on there. Basically you can put video files into a folder on your PC and then watch it on your TV. I downloaded pretty much the entire run of WCW TV from 1997. Nitro, Main Event, Saturday Night and Worldwide are all on there. I don't have WCW Pro unfortunately. |

Watching all these weekly NWA-TNA PPV's reminds me how desperate I was for an alternative to WWE in 2002. You had the WWA running the occasional PPV until the spring of 2003, using pretty much the same talent available, and promoting their shows poorly. I recall them advertising Randy Savage for a PPV, only for him to back out a week or so before, and the substitute main event was something like Road Dogg vs. Brian Christopher. MLW was based out of Florida and had a weekly TV show (Underground TV) on the Sunshine Network (later Sun-Sports) at a late night hour in the middle of the week. They would hold a big card, air 2-3 matches a week, and repeat. Had an ECW feel, but lighter on the violence. Sun-Sports/Sunshine Network also had a deal that aired stuff from IWA Puerto Rico (or something along those lines), with Savio Vega as "the Boss." They would splice in public domain World Class matches into the show, among other stuff from the early-mid 90's that no one else wanted to own. |

I completely forgot how into I was with K-Krush's transformation into "The Truth" and winning the NWA Title from Ken Shamrock. |

It's kind of amazing to go back to. He starts off as kind of a afterthought mid-carder, he cuts a couple of great promos, just catches fire with the crowds and the company was smart enough to get behind him and push him. Funny how that can work out some times. Boy, was Shamrock a bust as champion though. |

He's awful. I know you can't make Jarrett the Champ at Day 1 without screaming for his head, but their options as far as babyfaces are concerned were weak: Shamrock, recently-released from WWE Scott Hall, or... uh... that's it, for "names" they kept around for more than 1 shot appearances. Brian Christopher? Even with daddy's bloodline and being in the south, he just spent 2-3 years as a JTTS in a comedy tag team, with a few months sandwiched in there of a serious push. Five weeks in, and the only people I've really cared about were Styles, Lynn, Christopher, Low Ki, and K-Krush. Jarrett's been tolerable, but the writing/booking for each show is head-scratching bad. |

They really tread water until Raven and D'Lo Brown get released in 2003 and give them some legit heavyweight talent. |

By the time Killings gets the NWA Title, the company is practically in the shitter, with serious budget cuts and even weaker roster. Bringing in an out of shape Road Dogg (sorry, B.G. James) and pushing Curt Hennig despite clearly having problems with substance abuse just made it worse. |

All I really remember of that time frame is the X-Division. I couldn't tell you much about the "World" title scene. And I got every PPV starting week six (or so... the one with Ki vs. Red). |

Week #6 does feature Low-Ki vs. Amazing Red in the opening match. I was getting my bashing ready for Red (I kinda' don't care for him), and then they have a pretty good, near 3-star match. Oh well, maybe next week. It's been fun watching James Storm and Chris Harris evolve as a tag team. They go from being randomly thrown together at the last minute, to bickering over Storm's choice of character ("buckaroo bullshit"), and eventually into becoming AMW. I can see why so many people were calling Sonny Siaki a second-rate Rock: The physique and constantly referring to himself in third person, except he does it with so little energy that he might as well be doing an impression of Don Muraco filming Fuji General. Speaking of Siaki, it's amazing to see how many careers went nowhere or ended for guys we saw on a regular basis in the first year or so of TNA. |

Red was really good until he suffered that knee injury in 2003 and came back too early from it. I always felt that David Young was really under appreciated. He wasn't amazing but he was a super solid guy in the ring. |

Young's problem was being put in the ring with the wrong people. They seemed to push him into X-Division matches, but he worked a standard heavyweight style. He wasn't bad, just horribly miscast. He was capable of an occasional high spot, but after watching Styles and Low Ki blow you out of the fucking water, it looked boring and weak. |

Two more names from TNA's past I was surprised faded away from wrestling, at least in an active role: Simon Diamond and Johnny Swinger. Diamond was a bit up there in age, but damn if you could tell (about 35 at the time of TNA's start), and he was solid worker and with decent mic' skills. Swinger's WWE run was so forgettable I think he wasn't included in the 1st edition of the WWE Encyclopedia (as Tony Parisi, working exclusively on Heat in the Fall/Winter of 2005-06). |

Say what you will about Don West's lack of wrestling knowledge, at least in the early days, but man does the dude know how to sell something. Unfortunately his excitement lead to an excellent name calling blunder. Who the fuck is Ricky The Steamboat Dragon? |
