My goal for 2012 is to watch ECW by the truckloads. I bought some of the tv sets and I'm going to be starting from the Eastern Championship Wrestling days. I might submit reviews to the main site. |

You're doing this...voluntarily?! I've never seen the "Eastern" stuff, so I'm excited for that. I used to be intrigued by ECW from their 95-98 boom period, but I can't stand it nowadays. What I've seen from 1996 and on just seems formulaic. ECW-formulaic, but formulaic nonetheless. |

Eastern is interesting. You have a lot of what would become the ECW mainstays like the Sandman and Tommy Dreamer hanging around with standard baby face gimmicks. You have some old timers like Snuka and Muraco hanging around. Tito Santana comes in and wins the belt while under a WWF contract. Hawk comes in for a solo run. Terry Funk and Eddie Gilbert have a really good feud. And that's really just 1993. The tv is going to be in April of 1993 so there's a good year and 4 months of Eastern before Douglas tosses the NWA World Title. |

I've only read about the 1993 stuff with Eddie Gilbert booking Snuka, Muraco, etc. The 'Rise & Fall of ECW' DVD makes it sound like ECW opened in 1993 and Public Enemy carried them until 1995. I think they might've shown a quick clip of Jimmy Snuka walking to the ring, but that was about it. When I first started watching ECW in early 1995, Tommy Dreamer had just shed his suspenders. They'd still show older highlights, with the suspenders. Add in his silly name, and I got the sense that he had been in a "pretty boy tag team" or something. |

The tv started in April of 1993 but they had been around for a year at that point and had some sort of television before this. Public Enemy doesn't show up until later in 1993. I would say Funk vs. Gilbert carried the company through most of 1993. |

Snuka was really the main draw of the shows until later in 1993. If you watch older stuff, he factors in heavily to the television. Dreamer was doing a pretty boy gimmick. The Sandman was doing a surfer gimmick complete with surfboard. Sabu was pretty cool as they would bring him out in a straight jacket on a gurney and he'd just act like a total whackjob. |

Was thumbing through old issues of WWF Magazine, and came across something quite unusual in the September '93 issue. Unusual because, at the time, WWF Magazine was almost entirely done in kayfabe. One of the articles is a two page spread, entirely in plain text sans one very small picture, running down Billy Graham for his lawsuits and steroids scandals during the early 90's. It's pretty tastelessly written, noting him as "washed up" and paid to fail at everything he did after his hip surgery replacement. It's mean spirited, and while some points made are valid, the hateful smear is just too much to really read with any serious thought. Edit: You know kayfabe is out the window when they refer to Graham by his real name. OOOOOH!!! |

That does sounds vicious. This was around the time of the steroid trials, so I'm guessing they wanted to bury or insult him in some way. |

One of the choice paragraphs from the article... "Who then is Billy Graham? Our investigation (necessitated by his lawsuit) has revealed that he is a High school dropout and has never held a real job. He has a well-documented past of tax liens as well as non-support orders for the two children he left behind when he married for the fifth time. " Then it goes on about his steroid abuse from 1966 to 1989 and Dr. Zahorian for a while. Here's another... "When Graham improved (from hip replacement surgery), he tried to wrestle for about six months and was not very good at it. When he could no longer wrestle, he was paid to be a manager. When he couldn't manage, he was tried as a color commentator. When he couldn't do that, there was nothing else to try, and his last affiliation with Titan ceased. In sum, Vince McMahon paid to help Graham have his operation and carried him for three years." |

Probably stemmed from the Phil Donahue shows which had Vince and Graham as guests: YouTube- Donahue- March 1992 Typical "cheesy gotcha lawyer" techniques that Vince likes to use when he gets frustrated or nervous (like his HBO appearance with Bob Costas in the late 90's). |

Talking about the WWF circa 1993 and all the unusual booking decisions got me thinking about Randy Savage. I don't think Savage many in-ring appearances during the time after WrestleMania IX and Survivor Series, but one of the house show programs I recall, and found out was taped for severa Coliseum Videos, was matches of him against GIANT GONZALEZ. I found this odd, for 2 reasons... 1. Giant Gonzalez's only real claim to fame in the WWF was the program with Undertaker that seemingly went on forever, and seemed unlikely to do a tour of matches against someone else. That is until one might recall that, very briefly, the Undertaker was put in a mini-program with Mr. Hughes, before the latter was released, and Gonzalez was reshuffled in. 2. The "big scary monster" opponent never seemed like it fit with Randy Savage. It felt more like a Hulk Hogan thing. Savage made it a habit of wrestling matches where he seemed to get whooped for 99% before the big comeback, but I never really associated him as the monster killer. |

Agreed. Although to examine it a bit, the only real "monster" he had to contend with as a face was One Man Gang/Akeem. He had some obligatory matches against Andre in the fall of 1988, which sorta' had the same formula: Savage gets beat on, limps around, Liz looks concerned, Savage comes back to win (usually by DQ or countout). I don't think he had any "monster" title defenses in 1992. Sayyyyy... his 1992 run is something that doesn't get a lot of pub, aside from his big win against Flair. That might be worth tracking down and examining. |

Weird, but during Savage's 1992 reign, he went around the country beating Ric Flair in rematches. The only other opponents he defended against were IRS, Da' Mountie, Shawn Michaels (all in the Spring), Kamala and Repo Man (around June). |
