You were probably referring to this, but there are one or two televised matches where Lombardi's wearing a throwback Brooklyn Dodgers t-shirt, all ripped up. I guess those got too hard to find. |

It would be way easier to get those shirts these days. Everything is a T-shirt. I know a guy who can get us some Montreal Expos World Series Champions stuff, real cheap. :P |

The April 8th episode of Superstars is the first fresh TV content since Mania V (PTW was a "Shill Coliseum Video" special), and it surprises me how much footage from WrestleMania was used, notably for the three top singles programs, Hogan/Savage, Warrior/Rude, and Roberts/Andre. There's a taped interview during Hogan's celebration with Elizabeth that is crashed by Sensational Sherri, then Savage. Savage is about to deck her until Hogan makes the save, but then Sherri attacks him from behind and Savage lays him out with a chair shot to the chest. This feud MUST CONTINUE! Lanny Poffo is introduced via vignettes as "The Genius", a pompous know-it-all. Instead of reciting poems patting babyfaces on the back and occasionally running down heels, now it's the opposite. He's actually allowed to refer to himself as Lanny Poffo, but like every gimmick, he lost his name and was simply "The Genius" after a short while. See also: "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig. No Holds Barred is coming to theaters on June 6th. For two plus months, we would be treated to excessive teasers and clips of Hulk Hogan's starring role as a professional wrestler who is too loyal to jump ship to a rival network. The Twin Towers and Demolition are being paired up for a Tag Title feud, although without much reason other than "these guys are fighting, come buy tickets to see it." As a young kid who played with his action figures all the time, Demolition vs. the Towers was like a tag team dream match to me. Oh, and "Jive Soul Bro" still rules. As for a feud NO ONE wants to see... Big John Studd vs. Andre The Giant, roles reversed. Only one of their matches made it to TV (a stinker taped at the Boston Garden), and Studd would be gone by the end of May for reasons I'm unsure of. His replacement? Hillbilly Jim. They somehow found someone to have even worse matches with Andre than Studd was capable of. For whatever reasons, both the Hart Foundation and Powers of Pain seemed to be working a lot of singles matches during the fall and early summer (and occasionally working tags... against each other). Based on memory, that leaves the following to fill out the division: Demolition, the Rockers, the Bushwhackers, the Brain Busters, the Twin Towers, and the Rougeaus. Strike Force had just reformed and broken up, the Bolsheviks were inactive (Volkoff was gone for most of '89 because ???), and even the babyface bottom-feeder Young Stallions quietly broke up. It's easy to forget, but Rick Martel's heel run didn't instantly involve a transition into his "Model" gimmick. He's more of a generic heel managed by Slick of all people, until he started adopting the signature traits of his model gimmick in the Fall. |

SHAME for not mentioning the Ronnie Garvin/Greg Valentine program that kicked off and sold out arenas, nationwide. That was a very NWA-ish type of program and, while a little out of place in the WWF, was much better than expected. I had gotten sick of Valentine in 1989 and this was probably his best singles angle since Tito Santana. Yeah, I always pump it up a little bit. Also... ZEUS the Human Wrecking Machine is coming! I actually thought a lot of the NHB characters would be arriving, too. Namely Stan Hansen. Blue Blazer quietly disappears in June. I never knew until recently, but Poffo randomly turned heel a few weeks before debuting as "The Genius" on TV. No in-ring incident or physical attack on anybody. He just read his usual poem, worked in a reference to the Savage/Hogan program....and surprisingly backed Savage. He then refused to throw his frisbees and left the ring. I think it's a Boston show and it's funny to hear the fans suddenly boo the longtime crowd favorite. Completely different thing, but while running through Wikipedia for some WWF 1989 stuff, I ran into Lelani Kai's page. VERY shocked to see that she was only in her late 20's during her 80's WWF run. She looked much older. Judy Martin was only a few years her senior and she also looked like a hag in her early 50's. |

There's so much going on in April I had to cut off. :P The next disc kicks off with the Valentine/Garvin program. Garvin got a fluke victory, so Valentine offers his career for a rematch, and cheats to win. Garvin spends the rest of the Spring and some of the Summer as a "no nonsense" referee, until screwing Valentine over and being reinstated. I'm a bit surprised they milked this thing until the Royal Rumble the following year, but it wasn't bad. Brutus Beefcake starts calling Sherri "Scary Sherri" and has his mullet cut off for it. NOT THE MULLET! No worries white-trash haircut lovers, the mullet gradually grew back. Danny Davis' in-ring career is over, as he's been reinstated by Jack Tunney on a probationary basis. This came out of nowhere, as he literally went from a bottom of the barrel JTTS one week back to being a referee the next. (the end of one taping cycle and the beginning of another being the reason... and it was a few weeks between, so slight inaccuracy there on my behalf) Jake Roberts is scheduled to face Ted Dibiase on Superstars, but Dibiase is playing deathly ill, so Virgil takes his place. Jake dominates, but Dibiase shows up fine and puts a hurting on Jake Roberts, taking him out of action until the Fall. No idea if it was to give him legit time off for an injury, or another drug suspension. Edit: Jake shows up a few weeks later on Superstars for a Brother Love segment... I didn't think he made any appearances after the attack from Dibiase. Seems like suspension might be the right answer after all. |

Picking up in Mid-May... Jim Duggan defeats Haku for the quasi-title of "King." This seemed to come out of nowhere. Haku had been King for almost a year at this point, but never actually defended the crown since it wasn't a real title. Then he puts it on the line and loses it to Duggan. I wonder if the plan all along was to put the crown on Savage for his "Macho King" run, justifying things a bit, but that still gives us about 4 months of Duggan prancing around with the crown and cape and lessens Haku's importance on the heel side of the midcard. I never paid too much attention until just now (a Challenge feature with Valentine and Honky), but why did Demolition start wearing chaps with their entrance attire? The studded masks and vests were cool, but the chaps kind of gave them a less bad-ass vibe. Ronnie Garvin is already running amuck as the take-no-crap special enforcer referee. Courtesy of the Update segment on Superstars, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka is back, having made a surprise appearance at WrestleMania V right as the scheduled match of Garvin vs. Bravo is about to take place. This was definitely an odd way to reintroduce someone to the audience. Not a vignette, not a squash, just being introduced during a match he has nothing to do with, and then just disappearing moments later as if he was never there. The Roueaus and Rockers kick-off a program based on the Rockers having terrible theme music with lyrics (it's quite bad). The funny thing about this beat-down is that they target Michaels' throat, and to sell the beating, he started working house show matches with a bandage around his neck. One of the most comical uses of bandages I've ever seen to sell an ass-kicking. |

Watching the May episode of SNME... Sherri is making one of her first appearances at ringside as Savage's manager, and it's almost an unwatchable match because the story is that she is more than willing to interfere... A LOT, making this the most blind referee possible. It feels like Savage's match quality takes a dip at this point... coincidence? OH, and Savage is now 2-0 against Hart Foundation members on SNME. Zeus finally makes his presence felt physically, "brutally" assaulting Hogan before his Cage Match with the Big Boss Man. Zeus had appeared before, but this was his first physical altercation, and it was really, REALLY bad. Imagine if Vince went ahead and put him in singles matches. I haven't really mentioned much about the Brain Busters, and that's something worth commenting on. Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard were still prominently featured as their days in JCP winded down (being associates of the World Champ always helps), but in the WWF... I wouldn't say they were treated bad (they did lose some house show matches to the BUSHWHACKERS), but they just fell somewhere in the middle. Their stay was short, but we got some good matches from them against WWF mainstays like the Hart Foundation, Demolition, and Rockers, so it was a good year for wrestling quality. Not much to say about Jim Duggan vs. Rick Rude other than it wasn't the usual awful match expected out of Duggan, and the show closes with Snuka squashing Boris Zhukov in about 90-seconds. |

FWIW, the Brain Busters were my "1989 Tag Team of the Year", awarded by my then-16 year old self. I hated the Rockers, but the Busters performed well in their matches with them. Their Demolition matches were great, as far as I'm concerned. They closed a house show I went to, in September 1989 (the "Main Event" was Warrior vs Andre). One item I'll never sell is my "WWF Program" from that show, with "Heenan's Brain Busters Bag the Belts" on the cover. When they came in, in October 1988, I expected them to flop as they were "too boring and old". Sorry, but at the time, I really didn't like the Four Horsemen V2.0 that ran the NWA in 1988. When the Busters upset Demolition for the titles, I was not only shocked, but impressed. From that point on, I kinda' understood the whole appeal of Heel Champs and they became one of my favorites. I was even a little bummed when they lost the straps back to Demolition. |

All that being said, its a shame The Brainbuster thing kind of shoehorned Arn Anderson into being a tag-team guy. I mean, he and Tully were great together, but watching his WCW singles stuff gave me some new appreciation for Arn. Everything the guy does, down to the most minute detail is incredible, nasty and believable. Arn was like the ugly, fat old dude at the end of the bar that everybody knew not to mess with. He didn't say much and even when he did, it wasn't especially clever or articulate, but he'd eat you alive in a fight. And then WCW tried to recapture The Brainbusters glory by putting Arn with Bobby Eaton, who he, frankly, never really clicked with. It was an attempt at a super-team even if WCW wouldn't acknowledge it. And then, even worse was Arn's run with Larry Zybysko. By 1993 Larry's style had been antiquated by 1973. Watching Larry get heat was like watching paint dry. Not fun. If anything else, in 1993, I would have had Paul Orndorff ditch his big, useless lug of a partner (no, not Paul Roma - that's not until about 1995), The Neutralizer and bring in Arn Anderson as his partner. Give Paul a loose association with the 4-Horseman as a "backup" member or something. |

I politely disagree. Arn had a decent singles run as TV Champion with three separate reigns in 1990, 1991 and 1995. Each reign was six months or more. So I don't think he was typecast as a tag team guy after the WWF. I know you said "kind of"... I'd also say that when Arn spoke, he WAS articulate and clever. He kinda' reminded me of Mike Singletary, who would also cut interviews with his glasses on. Made both of them look studious, but you knew they were big bad tushy-kickers. Sure, Arn would never be a world title/main event guy, but he was perfectly fine in the role he had. |

I still think Arn Anderson would have been the perfect old-school "rasslin'" heel ECW could have used in about 1997/1998. When Eric Bischoff fired Ric Flair for going to his son's wrestling tournament and skipping a Thunder taping in '97, Arn was retired. Just imagine if Arn hadn't been retired. I'd have had ECW scoop him up in a heartbeat when he left WCW during the Flair controversy. There's no way ECW could have afforded Ric Flair, but Arn fit the ECW hardcore style pretty well. Hell, keep Brian Pillman there instead of letting him go to the WWF and have them team up. But now I'm just fantasy booking. |

I'm watching random episodes of WWF Metal from 1999-2000 since its a lot of undercard stuff I've never seen before. There's a match between Taka Michinoku and Crash Holly on the 1-8-2000 episode that is worth giving a look. It only runs about 6-minutes long, but its random matches like this that are always fun to look back on. Stuff nobody remembers even happening because of a poor time slot and just being a throw-away show for random undercard matches. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2dqelo_w...-8th-2000_sport |

I took a break from wrestling for hockey season. But I'm back at it now. I picked up Superstars and Wrestling Challenge post Mania 3. About a month in and Steamboat has barely appeared after his big win. Duggan has been getting a big push and has frankly been the weekly highlight of some otherwise boring TV. I've elected to skip Primetime for this project. If any of you are interested. There is a program called Plex. It let's you create a mini server on your PC and then let's you watch it on TV. It's nice since I got all of the WWF TV from 1986-1995 on a hard drive. |

As much as I like Prime Time, it adds almost nothing to the weekly product when it comes to advancing storylines, other than the occasional banter and even that is usually just secondary to Gorilla and Heenan making fun of each other. There's always the occasional good feature match, but other than that, sticking with Superstars and Challenge seems like the right call for not dragging things along. |
