Next week Ricky Steamboat defends the IC belt against Butch Reed. That might potentially be good.

UWF fun with the 2nd week of TV... pushing Col. DeBeers' white supremacy gimmick by refusing to let a black man be the referee for his match, heel Dan Spivey being cheered over goofy good-guy Brian Blair, "Davey" Meltzer gets beat on again, this time by Cactus Jack, and Chief Jay Strongbow Jr. will be making his debut. It's definitely not Mark Young, so it's some scrub playing pretend, like he's a member of the Ascension or something. Next week has Dr. Death vs. Paul Orndorff as a feature, so that should be fun.

Abrams is actually pretending that this Chief Jay Strongbow isn't a Junior, but the REAL DEAL. And he's awful. This might be the worst squash match I've ever seen on TV. Col. DeBeers feud with the black referee looks like great TV in comparison.

Is it the Strongbow brother that showed up in World Class?

Only footage of his I can find on YouTube are UWF and California Championship Wrestling. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a Cali local that Abrams figured would work for a cheap bait-and-switch spot. A further google search reveals almost nothing, other than he worked on the pacific coast in the late 80's.

I don't know what the emotion is I should be feeling, but I'm in a weird mood to watch a bunch of UWF, GWF, and IWCCW stuff. Seriously, I couldn't have been THAT big of a wrestling fan to like all these 3rd rate promotions... and no, AWF is forever off that list after sitting through 24 episodes of hell.

The GWF can be good if it's the really early stuff.

Basically the Eddie Gilbert era and before they ran out of funds and started only using cheap and/or local talent.

Looking ahead in the UWF, I'll probably just stop after the
Beach Brawl PPV, with tapings becoming very erratic and featuring mostly low-level names. I might do a highlight recap of the bundle of 10+ episodes that I have that follow Beach Brawl, but they make Fake Strongbow look decent.

One of these years I'm going to get all the Memphis footage and watch from 1979 till it closes in 1997.

Scrooge,

You should consider SMW. It starts slow but it's a lot of fun as a promotion. I know the whole run is out there in one thing.

There's a ton of SMW stuff on Youtube. If you want to see Evil Russians vs. Cowboys in the mid-90's having boring, but realistic and intelligently booked matches, SMW is your show.

Over in the Fantasy Booking folder, I started booking my own version of SMW, based in 2004, kind of based on the same idea (smart, consistent booking and black and white heels and faces) but modernizing the roster.
What "World of Warcraft" players see when they're not playing.....

I did see a lot of SMW available on YT, and have slowly begun to download and burn shows to DVD format. Growing up in New York and with standard cable, the only way I knew SMW was through WWF's occasional comment, and in the Apter mags.

To change things up for the day, I'm popping in the first of many, many, many SMW TV discs. The thing that stands out the most to me from watching the 1st episode is the commentary: Bob Caudle and Dutch Mantell keep me interesting in watching with calm PBP and explanations of what we're seeing without the need to shout over each other or try and make themselves the stars. It makes even a so-so match like Brian Lee vs. Barry Horowitz or Killer Kyle vs. Robert Gibson seem like a good idea. I know Cornette is way behind the times these days, but damn could he cut a hell of a promo.
