What have you thought of the Dirty White Boy?

I think the biggest problem with early SMW is that the heels are just so much more compelling than the faces. You have DWB, Landell, Wright and the Bodies just doing these fucking great promos every week and then you have Lee, Horner and Gibson on the other side.

I agree... the heel side is so much more interesting, with DWB/Ron Wright (excellent chemistry), Cornette and the H. Bodies, a disgruntled Orndorff, Dutch Mantel picking fights with Brian Lee and being a classic but not overbearing color man, and now they've got Buddy Landel in the mix. Even the occasional Killer Kyle squash is interesting because of his mystique.

On the face side... yeah, not too exciting. Tim Horner and Robert Gibson are decent workers but horrible, HORRIBLE promos (and the best thing about Horner is his theme music), and Brian Lee has a lame catchphrase to go with a bland everything else. "Nitro" Danny Davis isn't too thrilling, either, and the Fantastics look a bit old for the gimmick.

Also, FYI. I'm pretty sure Terry Gordy had his stroke around the time period you're heading into so he disappears for awhile.

Jackie Fulton sucks honestly.

I've come to believe that Robert Gibson is mediocre as a talent and it really shows how awesome Ricky Morton was that he carried the Rock N Roll Express to the heights that he did.

The balance does get better though. There are eventually some WCW releases that show up and give the faces some good talkers.

One half of the brackets for Volunteer Slam is announced with Gibson/Golden and Horner/Orndorff, with Lee/Landel and DWB/Dy-no-mite in the other half. Based on card position, I can assume a finals of either Lee vs. Orndorff, otherwise we're getting the Dirty White Boy against Tim Horner or Robert Gibson. They can always do a double elimination to make Lee vs. White Boy the finals, I guess, thus eliminating the 3rd potential match of the tournament.

Smokey Mountain Wrestling was definitely a Southern "Wrasslin'" promotion like that; that being the weaker, less exciting babyfaces and the big, extravagant heels. Its all about white meat everyman types like Tim Horner trying to beat the bigger, richer, more athletic heels who are just such cocky pricks all the Southern 9-to-5'ers in the audience want to see the guy they identify with shut the asshole heel up.

Its classic Southern wrestling.

One episode is dedicated entirely to the Tag Tournament so it's fast forward material until the semi finals between the Maulers and Fantastics.

Feels like they're teasing a split between Dutch and Carl Stiles.

Killer Kyle is giving off some Big Bubba vibes. I can see him as am enforcer for a main event heel.

I do wish I "get" tthe southern face appeal, but I don't. I'm having more fun cheering Cornette and Ron Wright.

We get an impromptu match between the Fantastics and Heavenly Bodies over a pretty good "momma" joke from Cornette (she wasn't lonesome while your daddy was drunk, as long as you had 30 minutes to kill and 10 bucks to spend.") 2 weeks before the scheduled Title Tournament Finals at Volunteer Slam.

Hey Scrooge, I'm rewatching the UWF Blackjack Brawl here and I'm seeing a match you didn't cover in your review;

Two big muscle heads, that look like they're straight out of a WCW Power Plant class circa-1998- The Irish Assassin vs. Sampson. And yeah, the match sucks.

Also, Sampson is supposedly replacing Hercules. So, they got a guy from the Christian Bible to replace a deity from Ancient Greece. Funny stuff.

Also, Tyler Mane vs. Steve "The Wild Thing" Ray for the "MGM Grand Championship". Sabretooth can be champion of a casino?

Those two matches were between the match before them and the terrible women's match.

Its on Youtube if you want to watch it.

Somehow you just made Blackjack Brawl worse by revealing these hidden "gems". Ugh. I'm not rewatching that show unless I go back to drinking alcohol.

He said in an interview somewhere that he wanted to build around Brad Armstrong but WCW wouldn't let him go until much letter. You'll see as it progresses that he settles for Brian Lee but doesn't have much faith in him. Once the fall of 1992 approaches it feels like he really starts getting the talent he wants.

As an aside, common theme of SMW is Cornette mishandles his faces.

Halfway through the Volunteer Slam. The only surprise to me was booking Orndorff/Horner to go that long and NOT go with the Draw, despite the classic signs of pointing it out like announcing X-amount of minutes left over and over. With a Semi's of Lee/White Boy and Orndorff/Gibson, it's obvious it'll be Lee over Orndorff in the Finals.

"The Party Patrol" gets a title shot against the Heavenly Bodies based on... losing in the 1st round of the Tournament? I know they had to do without the Fantastics because of other commitments and need a break between the Semi's and the Finals, but maybe they could've given the underdog team of Nitro Danny Davis and Joey Maggs a rematch since they pushed Maggs was working the semi-finals selling the neck after taking a piledriver from Orndorff a week or so earlier.

I'm a bit disappointed by the ending of the Tournament Finals, but I guess you can't have the babyface go over three top heels clean in one night.

And this is the point where SMW starts hitting it's stride.

Tim Horner's poor-sport antics continues (see Rip Rogers' hour-long squat challenge). Buddy Landel wins an 18-Man Mountain Mayhem Battle Royal (a.k.a Royal Rumble) and $5,000, so Horner cries foul that he eliminated Landel and got powder thrown in his face (in a no DQ Match), so Bullet Bob gives in to his crying and books a match with the money on the line. Landel loses, so he rightfully lays Horner out, rips up the check, and shoves it down his throat.

Dirty White Boy with an awesomely sleazy heel move, hiding behind the pleading of Ron Wright and his "medical condition" to avoid an in-ring confrontation with Brian Lee, moments after putting the verbal beatdown on him and promising pain and suffering.

Cornette has a gift for Jackie Fulton for when his in-ring career is ended by the Heavenly Bodies: A "Will Work For Food" sign.
