I cannot lie... I've never been that high on Steamboat. Yes, he was a good wrestler, but any time fantasy booking revolves around putting him in a better position, I just have to scoff a bit (this is mainly for late 80's/early 90's Steamboat).

I've mentioned before that, to me, Steamboat is probably the most frustrating wrestler of the 80's/90's, due to his random disappearances.

He was always sort of the "cool" wrestler-- his "Dragon" character wasn't a silly gimmick (at least in the 80's) unlike something like "The Barber" or Hillbilly Jim. So that was part of the appeal. He was upper-mid card and fans dug him based on his work. Closest thing I can think of is Chris Benoit in 1997-1998.

Fantasy bookers love Steamboat, which shows how detached from reality those scenarios really are. I remember one that had Sting vs. Steamboat headlining WM6... and the guy was serious about it. His teasing 1989 run as NWA Champ (with only a few matches) is what fantasy bookers point to. "See, he can be a top-level guy"! But Steamboat disappeared from the NWA, less than 6 months after he arrived (came in end of January 89; gone by July). Very frustrating.

I remember that Prime Time as I watched it a few months back (it's in my massive wrestling collection)and Gorilla was like our feature is Bam Bam Vs ''The fast food king'' King Kong Bundy. I'm like Bundy hasn't been on WWF TV since the SNME that aired in January that was taped in December 87!!

I loved Prime Time, but damn if some of the match selections weren't head scratchers, like when they would use footage at least 6 months old and presented it as new (and sometimes worse).

Prime Time is my favorite wrestling show ever but your absolutely right Scrooge with the match choices. If I recall the 12-31-90 show had a match between Snuka vs Macho King that was from late 89 itself. So your talking almost a whole year old. Regardless though the banter between Heenan and Monsoon will never get old.

When do you think Prime Time went downhill? To me it was February 91 when they changed the format to a studio with just Heenan and Monsoon to a studio with an audience. The show was never the same after that imo.

Steamboat is one of the bigger "what ifs" in wrestling. What if he hadn't asked for time off and been beaten by Honky Tonk Man? What if he'd stuck around in WCW and made his series with Ric Flair a quintology of matches? What if Steamboat had turned heel and worked against Hogan in the WWF or Sting in WCW? What if Steamboat hadn't taken the bump on his ass that misaligned his spine and forced him into early retirement? What if Steamboat was still wrestling in the mid-90's? Anyone else think Shane Douglas would have cast the line to Steamboat for a feud or a tag-team reunion in ECW? Where would Steamboat have wound up? The man, as a wrestler and an athlete, was a damn machine. His body was a precision honed instrument fed a steady diet of chicken and a carefully calorie balanced diet. He only had to quit because of one poor and unfortunate rough bump. Think about Steamboat in 1998. Would he have been in WWF's wrestling circus? Would he be the Light-Heavyweight "ambassador" for the company, being the guy who awarded the belt to its first winner? Would have have been in WCW, going gray, making seven figures a year and being spray painted on by the NWO every Monday night? Would he have torn down the house with Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Mysterio, Ultimo Dragon, Juventud, Billy Kidman and the like? Would he have joined the NWO, marking his first heel turn in American wrestling? Would he have been fed to Goldberg during Goldie's growing streak?

Who knows. Biggest "what if" in wrestling.

True. I don't even remember there being a time when Sting even teased leaving WCW. He was always a featured player and one of their bigger names and was usually treated as such. Also think, why would Sting jump and turn heel and be programmed against Steamboat?

Fantasy Booking typically doesn't include logic and well-thought-out plans in situations like that. Same for any moron who tries to fantasy book Warrior being the Black Scorpion and equally impossible nonsense.

That Black Scorpion angle man what a mess that was. Between that and Jim Herd wanting to shave Flair's head and give him a gladiator gimmick, I can see why he left for the WWF in the summer of 91.

To be fair, WCW did want Warrior to be The Black Scorpion, even going as far as to put out feelers to see if he'd be interested. He turned them down or essentially ignored them. One or the other. And the whole plan just fell through and became week-by-week nonsense as WCW struggled to plug the right guy in as the Black Scorpion "mastermind". Ric Flair was the only logical conclusion after a certain point.

I think Steamboat is great if he's your #3 face in a promotion. Had he stayed in the NWA past 89 being behind Flair and Sting would have been the perfect role for him. If he's your ace then you're in trouble.

I understand he was proud of his self worth, but the guy walked out in '88 because he wasn't being pushed, then he walked out on WCW shortly into a program with Luger because he was low-balled an offer and was being positioned as maybe the #3 face, and then he comes back to WWF doing the goofy Dragon gimmick and after giving notice refused to do any jobs on TV. I bring this up because he was praised as a saint who was always a great company man, while bashing the Hogan, Michaels, and Bret's of the world for their selfish acts. Still a hell of a worker when he was motivated.

Me personally was always a Steamboat fan mostly for his in-ring work. But that WWF return in the Spring of 91 was a waste imo. Like Scrooge said he had that goofy Dragon gimmick and just overall the whole run was pointless. The only meaningful match he had during that time was the 6 man tag at Summerslam. He then feuded with Skinner in the Fall, that went nowhere then he was gone before Survivor Series even though he was advertised for the event.
