Charlie Minn was God awful no doubt about that. No wonder he only lasted like what maybe 6 months?

Joe Fowler is another WTF were they thinking hires. I felt bad for Heenan when he got paired up with him on All American for a few months after Mean Gene left.

I forgot all about Joe Fowler. Vince looking for cheap replacements when it came to the non-wrestling performers was a huge flop for a while. Throw in Stephanie Wiand while we're at it, but at least she had a personality, even if it was "annoying female version of Todd."

Fowler was a weather man here in Philly many years ago prior to that WWF stint. I remember all of a sudden seeing him on a wrestling show and I'm like why did they hire a weather guy?

From time to time I see him on those infomercials early in the morning hours hyping up Christmas lights and pressure cookers.

I was taken by surprise when I randomly saw him on the pressure cooker commercial. I was like "Hey, it's JOW FOWLER... My God, he sucked."

In one of my 1990 Flashbacks, I mentioned enjoying seeing established guys in the enhancement role, like Buddy Rose, Mike Sharpe, Pez Whatley, etc. etc.

Well, by the turn of 1995, they didn't have the best roster depth to have the same type of scenario. Yeah, guys like the Brawler and Mike Sharpe were still getting occasional work, but now a lot of the fun is seeing the enhancement guys who would become the pushed talent down the road. Among others, I've spied both Hardy brothers, Kanyon, The Mean Street Posse's Joey Abs, and Gangrel/Vampire Warrior (under the "Black Phantom" mask).

It still amazes me how the TV format didn't change until WCW practically forced their hand with head-to-head competition. Even with declining house show numbers, loss of syndication in large markets, and a weaker roster than ever before, they're still clinging to the "mostly squash matches on syndication, one "feature" match on Raw except in rare occasions" formula and sticking with hyping the live events. Maybe this works when the product is at least somewhat a draw, but by 1995? No, nobody wants to see squash matches from Kwang, Well Dunn, and Aldo Montoya every week.

I think Scotty Riggs had an appearance as Lex Luger's flag boy during his King of the Ring qualifying match against Yokozuna on Raw.

Making reference again to my Flashbacks, but in the spring of 1990, the WWF could tape their syndication shows from places like the Cow Palace, a location that could seat 10-15,000, depending on how business is.

Fast forward to the turn of the new year for 1995, and they're taping from the High School in Liberty, NY with a bit over 1,000 in attendance. Liberty was a short-drive from where I lived at the time (Monticello, NY), and had nothing going for it. Did I mention they taped back-to-back days for not just Challenge (which was a nothing show by this point), but Monday Night Raw?! Seeing the WWF guys working a "arena" that seats as much, if not less, than the ECW arena, is just a real downer. This isn't like taping at the Manhattan Center, a cool location with unique look. TV usually makes the arena look bigger than it really is, but watching these shows from Liberty? Yeah, it looks small and ugly on TV. Imagine how small it would be being there in person. I guess I'm looking forward to touching up on the WWF's decline of the 90's when the Flashbacks get to that point. The last time I compiled these sets I skipped a lot of the fluff, but the fluff just showcases the lack of depth way more than I remembered.

Hearing Gorilla Monsoon still calling the action in '95 just seems out of place, and they had almost nothing but babyface announcers. You had JR and Todd Pettingill mixing like oil and frozen yogurt on the Action Zone, Vince McMahon more and more out of touch with the in-ring product (Whatamanuever being uttered more and more every week), and of course, Gorilla Monsoon doing the same routine he did for a decade-plus, but with guys he had no chemistry with, like Ted Dibiase.

That's kind of what's always jarring about early Raw. They were kind of trying a new thing but still running the same format as they were in 1987. It really just amazes me that they didn't seriously overhaul their shit until 1996/1997.

The early episodes of Raw (I'd say most of '93) featured some big moments and angles, making it must see, but then it got lazy and fell into the standard syndication formula of a lot of squashes, a feature, and taping a shit ton at once. The entire hour doesn't need to be an all-star episode, but when an episode of Raw is nothing and a shitty Mabel vs. Bam Bam match, the format lost its way.
