Watching Hogan/Quake from SummerSlam '90, and it's so hard to watch, knowing that Earthquake was an established enough threat to be a good challenger to the Ultimate Warrior, but instead Warrior got a re-hashed, half-assed program with Rick Rude instead, while Hogan feuded with the new monster... tsk tsk tsk.

Wasn't that Hogan's thing, anyway?

It was, but Hogan was supposed to be the #2 behind Warrior as the new Champion and symbol of a new era... so he gets the #1 heel, and only serious threat for a main event run, while Warrior got Rude, who was jobbing to Roddy Piper for the last half of 1989 and never really did something to warrant his push. It made Warrior's title run boring, and by that program ended, Warrior was doing 6-man main events with LOD/Demolition while Hogan continued working with Earthquake throughout the year.

It would've made more sense, but I can picture Hogan complaining backstage he didn't get the program with the biggest guy, even if he's not champ.

Maria wins gold!

Quote:

Former WWE Diva Maria Kanellis had her first match since leaving WWE last night at the Family Wrestling Entertainment show in New York. She defeated TNA Knockout Tara in the first round of a tournament to crown the first-ever FWE Women's Champion. Maria later defeated TNA Knockout Winter to become the first champion.

Worthless Royal Rumble tidbit: Jacques Rougeau wrestled at 5 Rumble PPV's, and never in the Rumble Match:

6-Man in '89
opening tag in '90
filler vs. Koko in '91
IC Title vs. Piper in '92
Tag Titles in '94

I used to think Razor Ramon (Scott Hall, not fakey in '97) had the most appearances without being in the Rumble Match itself, 4 shows in a row, and part of the IC Title Match in three of them, but watching all the old Rumble PPV's made me catch Rougeau's non-rumble match resume'.

Huh, interesting. As a kid, I thought about Razor Ramon not being in the Rumble. I wouldn't have thought about Rougeau.

I've long said that the WWF using Born in the USA for Rotundo and Windham was a pretty dumb idea, because the actual message of the song is looking down on us for looking down on our vietnam veterans, but I now must include whoever was in charge of the sound department in Bill Watt's UWF on the last of "stupid retarded moron's who just pick a song based on the title.

I don't know if it was assigned to anyone in particular, but I've seen it used for a handful of babyfaces.

I had a...gasp.."real world discussion" with someone about "Born in the USA" and how it wasn't patriotic. He said: "it depends on how you look at it" and countered that the fact that it's pointing out the disillusionment, (potentially) addressing the problem about vets and having the right to talk about it is just another part of the US.

OK... but I say that's a very big stretch. It's almost like saying ANY radio track by a US artist is patriotic, just because it talks about American subjects. Stretch it to the point of absurdity and yes, even Katy Perry or that hip-hop song that rips off Paul Abdul would be "patriotic".

So, to swing it back to rasslin', what would be a good patriotic song for a pro-USA babyface? Maybe "Small Town" from John (Cougar) Mellencamp?

Actually, considering it was the 80's, I'd nominate "(You Can Still) Rock in America" by Night Ranger. It's about two teenagers sneaking out to "rock it, rock it". Remember, kids, "rock" usually means "fuck" in 80's music. Aside from the chorus, the song isn't exactly patriotic. But hey, going out and screwing while screaming "America" is better than talking about a vet in a dead-end town remembering his dead buddy.

(I think I once mentioned that I played "Rock in America" on my boombox as the "closing credits/victory song" for the little GI Joe scenarios of my youth).

I'll nominate the song in Rocky IV that James Brown does (Living in America?)... it's not great, but it's up-tempo, loud, and pro-america from start to end.

Ah! You mean the one that I added last night over in our "DWB Music Video of the Day" thread?!

Yeah, that works, too. Plus James Brown is pretty bad-ass, just on general principle.

Bought the Bobby Heenan DVD for (kind of) cheap...

The documentary is as disappointing as you can get. It's less than an hour long, barely has a cohesive structure, and just seems like a collection of videos they used on Confidential and other DVD's to fill this one out. Seeing clips from PTW and other shows were good for a few laughs, but I expected much, much more.

One of the fun bonus features is of his daughter telling stories about being a plant in the crowd, and we see clips of her being "bullied" by Big Bully Busick.

I started watching 1989 NWA Television last week.

Week 1 was a recap of 1988.

Week 2 had Barry Windham defending the U.S. Title against Eddie Gilbert and Rick Steiner defending the Television Title against Mike Rotunda. Both matches ended in DQs. The Windham/Gilbert one really pissed me off. It ran about 12 minutes, was okay and they ended it right as it was getting really good. Argh...

Gilbert also challenged Flair/Windham to a tag team match next week and has a mystery partner. Gee... I wonder who that is...
