I didn't want to start a thread just for this, but I guess Omega vs. Okada broke Dave Meltzer's star rating scale. I'm afraid to watch it based on the hype surrounding it, but I have it saved on my computer for when the buzz dies down and I can watch it without any outside influence.

I've heard the first 20 minutes are a little slow and then it gets crazy.

Time to set aside 9 hours to watch the newest "History of the Hardcore Title" DVD compilation. I could've sworn WWE did something like this before... oh wait...

To be fair, it was thrown together at random and only takes us into the Spring of 2001. We all know the division REALLY took off after that with RVD, Undertaker, and Bradshaw ruling the roost.

I'm sure I'm wrong, but this set might be the first time they featured a match from WWF Jakked on a compilation set. It's at least the first time I'm noticing the selection, and it also reminded me a storyline that went nowhere: Steve Blackman vs. the Head of Security, Jim Dotson (watch any show from the Attitude Era and you'll see him. Thick build, about 5'10", goatee). He passed away a little over a year ago at 49.

They actually wanted Jim Dotson to learn how to wrestle and do a little feud with Blackman, but he didn't go for it and wanted to stay in the security role.

Fun fact.

Also, when the Star Mags used to do their WCW vs. WWF Fantasy Booking issues, I always wanted to see them match Jim Dotson up against Doug Dillinger for a match.

Head of Security vs. Head of Security.

Another example of Meltzer completely violating the star rating system...

Quote:

4. Bushwhackers (Brian Wickens & Robert Miller) beat Iron Sheik (Hossein Khosrow Vaziri) & Nikolai Volkoff (Josip Peruzovic) in 8:42. The Bushwhackers are both in their mid-50s while Sheik is 61 and Volkoff is 52. Sheik could barely walk. The heels came out with a manager called Nikita Breshnikoff, who is actually Volkoff’s real-life roommate. Sheik twirled clubs that looked like they weighed about ten pounds each. This 140-pound guy brought the clubs to the ring. Sheik challenged Hulk Hogan and Bob Backlund. Snow vs. Bossman suddenly looked like Benoit vs. Otani. Volkoff hit Sheik with an object and Butch pinned him. Sheik & Volkoff teased a split after the match. -459.4 stars (absolute zero, this is the worst match I’ve ever rated in my life)

I'm glad I never have to watch that show ever again.

Who would give that match almost 9 minutes? God, WWF was the fucking worst in the 70s and 80s. Nothing like those random 20 minute matches with 2 jobbers on house shows.

I can't speak for the 70s as I didn't start watching until '83.

But I did sit through some jobber matches at the once a month MSG cards from '83 and
the next few years

First show I ever went to had a 20 minute draw between Tiger Chung Lee and Salvatore Bellomo
Though they hadn't reached jobberville yet as this was late '83

Jim Cornette said on his podcast that the idea behind giving two job/underneath guys a long opening match was to give the audience a chance to arrive, get in the building, get their food and drink, have a leak, and give the boys a chance to all get there, in case anyone was running late, before anything important happened. And it made every match after it seem bigger and better. And it gave scrubs a chance to polish their skills and work out all the kinks.

Don't get me wrong; long, heatless job matches suck. But there's a good reason for them.

The match I mentioned Chung lee vs bellomo was not the first match on the card

I had to google it, but it was Jose Luis Rivera vs Rene goulet

Didn't go 20 min

But as I said lee and bellomo didn't become jobbers until 84 after the expansion
Even Rivera won matches in '83

This was the iron sheik beating bob backlund for the belt show

If you check out some of the house show results from the 70s there are some real horror shows on the spot shows. Let me dig through a random year and I bet I can find some bad ones.
