While MLB does their slow-burn of announcing the award winners, the Phillies went out and re-signed Jim Thome for one year. I could see him backing up at 1B and doing Matt Stairs' old pinch-hit gimmick. Sorta' what Jason Giambi has been doing for the Rockies. Kinda' interesting, since it sounded like Thome was cruising towards retirement after hitting #600 this year. April 2012 is a long ways off, so while I always like seeing more Thome, I wouldn't be shocked if he decides to hang 'em up during Spring Training. |

That's a really stupid signing on the part of the Phillies. Thome is a DH at this point in his career. |

Looks like the Marlins' re-branding if underway, as this error message from MLB.com currently shows:
Notice that's it now "MIA" instead of "FLA". They're switching (back?) to "Miami Marlins" for their new stadium, plus getting a new uniform and identity overhaul. I said "back" because I could've swore they were originally called the "Miami Marlins" when they were awarded the expansion gig in 1991. But by 1992, I remember seeing "Florida" everywhere (first time was when a kid in my senior class began wearing their "F" hat, just to be a dick and counter everyone's new Rockies "CR" gear). Did I imagine the whole '91/Miami thing? Regardless, I always thought they shoulda' been "Miami" due to the alliteration. |

Now just move Miami to the American League, and in 2015, let's see if Back to the Future Part II predicts Chicago winning the World Series. Oh, and Kansas City traded Melky Cabrera to San Fran for a couple of pitchers. Woo. |

The Giants need to figure the offense stuff out and stop trying to grab anyone they think will hit .250 and score some runs. Melky seems like the classic one hit wonder kind of guy. I'm also eagering awaiting the first retarded signing for the Mets. |

Rumors today have Boston looking at Carlos Beltran. And the Royals are looking at Carlos Zambrano. |

All the Jose Reyes talk has got me to thinking. Why are GMs in 2011 still stupidly falling for the player that has the huge contract year? Reyes is a perfect example of this. He underachieves for 3 or 4 years despite massive hype as being the next big thing. Contract is up and he has a huge year. Carlos Beltran did the exact same thing and he never lived up to the deal he got. If I were a GM I think I would just pass on Reyes and let someone else take that risk. |

Good news Pirates fans!!! After letting Ryan Doumit walk, you now have Rod Barajas to take his place. Rest easy tonight knowing he'll be bring that massive .230 batting average to your team. |

Papelbon signs with the Phillies... I don't have to look at his stupid, open-mouthed "stare" anymore, at least not until a World Series. Makes me wonder who the Sawx will fill in the closer spot. Bard? Free agent pick-up? |

This Wilson Ramos kidnapping story is interesting. Apparently, "kidnapper" is a common day job in Venezuela. I remember Yorvit Torrealba's kids were kidnapped a few years ago, and the a-holes who did it taunted Torrealba about his bad stats. Anyways, it was mentioned on CNN's Anderson Cooper: 360, last night (hey, I was in the dentist chair and it was playing on the ceiling TV). Only thing is, throughout the entire segment they didn't mention Wilson Ramos' name. Just called him "a major league catcher" and showed pictures. Read More About It- at Yahoo! |

Ramos has been found, reportedly unharmed. It sucks thinking that in some parts of the world we still have people doing shit like this. What kind of thought process goes through the human mind to consider breaking into someones home, and taking them under gun point? It boggles the mind. Back to more pleasant topics, does anyone on earth believe the MARLINS are going to sign Reyes, Pujols, and Buehrle? I have a hard time imagining them picking up ONE of them, let alone any kind of shot at all three. This is the same team that had to cut their budgets year after year, and practically ignored the free agent market since 2004. New stadium, same old Marlins, until proven otherwise. |

I think they might get Reyes just because he's not going to live up to whatever contract he gets. They seem primed for that. |
