WCW Monday Nitro - January 12th 1998 Live from Jacksonville, Florida Jerry Flynn vs Bill Goldberg Goldberg gets a monsterous pop when he comes out and at this time, it was just simple squash wins for Goldberg. This match starts off with kicks from Flynn, until Goldberg hits a spear and a Jackhammer to get the win. 3/4* Black Cat vs Marty Jannetty First of all, what kind of name is black Cat? Also, this is Jannettys debut in WCW and the match starts off with a clothesline from Cat and a dropkick from Jannetty. Cat also hits a flapjack and Jannetty rolls him up but only gets two. Jannetty hits a awsome superkick and Cat spikes him on his head with a DDT. Jannetty nails a spinebuster and a Rocker Dropper to get the win. Wish it was a bit shorter but towards the end of the match there was some decent stuff. *1/2 Dean Malenko vs Chris Benoit Am I pumped for this one or what! This match starts off with some truelly incredible technical wrestling and Malenko tries to get a quick win with a roll up but only got a two count. Malenko hits a drop toe hold and also hits a dropkick. Benoit conects with stiff strikes in the corner and Malenko hits a belly to back suplex. Malenko aplies a chinlock but Benoit gets out and hits a clothesline. Malenko hits a hip toss and holds on onto a armbar, but Benoit counters that into a electric chair! Benoit hits a snap suplex and Malenko hits a insane German Suplex and Benoit rolls him up for two. Out of no where Benoit aplies the Crossface to get the win. After the match Raven DDT's Benoit. Good match, would have liked ot to have gone a bit longer, but apart from that no complaints from me. ***1/4 WCW TV Championship - Booker T © vs Saturn Saturn is a member of the Flock and is a former WCW TV Champion and this match starts off with a clothesline from Booker and he also hits a superkick. Saturn gets his first bit of offense in with strikes and Booker rolls him up for a two count. Saturn hits a nice pump handle slam and a decent T-Bone suplex. Booker hits a running forearm and Saturn rolls him up and uses the ropes to get the win. Rick Martel comes out and tells the referee what happened and he restarts the match! Booker hits a scissors kick and a sidewalk slam. He hits the Harlem Hangover to get the win and retain his TV Championship. **1/4 Hugh Morrus vs Lex Luger Hugh Morris is Bill Demot in the WWE in case you didn't know and this match starts off with a very impressive spinning heel kick from Hugh and Luger hits a powerslam which was equally as impressive. Luger hits a belly to back suplex and two clotheslines. Luger also hits a running forearm and Hugh hits a clothesline of the second rope. Hugh misses a splash of the top and Luger aplies the Torture Rack to get the win. *1/2 Chris Jericho vs Steve "Mongo" Mcmichael You know you have a great episode of Nitro when Mongo is in a match! Mongo starts off by out powering the smaller Jericho and Jericho hits a dropkick of the second rope. Mongo hits a sidewalk slam and Jericho hits a huricanrana of the top rope! Mongo hits a belly to back suplex and Jericho works the leg which Mongo sells like, sorry he doesn't sell. Mongo straight away gets up and hits a tombstone piledriver to get the win. Out of all the moves to do when trying to sell the leg don't do a tombstone, god Mongo could well be one of the worst wrestlers of all time. * WCW Cruiserweight Championship - Rey Mysterio JR vs Juventud Guerrera © Before this match could begin Jericho beats down on Rey until Juventud makes the save and botches a springboard and lands straight onto his head, I couldn't stop laughing! Juventud hits the Juvi Driver and the 450 splash to get the win. * WCW Tag Team Championship - The Outsiders vs The Steiner Brothers © The main event of the show is a Tag Team Championship match between the two biggest teams in the company at the time. The match starts off with Scott Steiner hitting a double underhock slam and both Steiners hit a double suplex onto Kevin Nash. Rick conects with strikes in the corner and also hits a clothesline of the second rope. He also hits a powerslam and Nash hits a clothesline. Hall hits a chokeslam which was trying to intimidate The Giant who was facing Nash at Souled Out. Scott Steiner gets the hot tag and he hits a belly to belly suplex, but Hall stops him and hits a followay slam. Nash hits a sidewalk slam and gets a two count and Hall also hits a clothesline. The referee gets bumped and Randy Savage hits a elbow drop of the top and hits Steiner and Savage looks angry that he didn't hit Nash. Nash covers Steiner to get the win and become new WCW World Tag Team champions. The show closes with Nash and Savage argueing! ** Overal - 6/10 Apart from the poor Mongo match where he completly no selled, this was a very good show with at no point it felt like it was dragging. It was only one month later when that changed which was when they went from two hours to three hours. |
