These aren't going to be match reviews so much as me working through the AJPW TV starting in 1984. I'm not very far in so we're going to pick up at the end of February 1984 and work our way through the TV as I get the time and acquire it. I will try to provide context to guys card placement when I can as well. |

2/25/1984 This week's celebrity sighting... Sheena Easton! Los Guerreros d. Mitsuhara Misawa and Shiro Koshinaka Clipped to hell but really fun from what they showed. It's really weird seeing Misawa playing a lower level junior heavyweight here. Misawa and Koshinaka hit some nice offense including a double dropkick. The Guerreros finish them off with relative little effort. Nothing match. This is just build up for Chavo Guerrero as he has a big title match with Mighty Inoue coming up. Bruiser Brody d. Ashura Hara Hara was 59-29-8 in 1984 so we're looking at a mid-carder here. This is just a maiming as Brody beats the shit out of Hara. They roll out to the floor and Hara tries to piledrive Brody onto the cement and that doesn't go very well. Brody piledrives Hara onto the floor. Blade job and Brody finishes him with a jumping knee drop. Decent enough match. Jumbo Tsuruta and Genichiro Tenryu d. Super Destroyers We're brawling immediately. This is the Destroyers first TV appearance in the two months I've been watching. But we just switched tours a few episodes ago so new gaijin talent has been filtering in. There's a spot where one of the Destroyers gets his leg caught on the top rope and is just hanging by his leg. It looks absolutely brutal. This was a fun match with Jumbo/Tenryu dominating most of the match but the Destroyers getting just enough offense to make it interesting. I'd probably call it ***1/4. Bruiser Brody and Super Destroyer #2 d. Giant Baba and Takashi Ishikawa Mark this down, Brody will pin Ishikawa here. As far as I've seen with Ishikawa on TV is they like to team him with Baba or Tenryu so they can eat a loss to Gaijin talent. In 1984 he was 48-47-16. Baba and Brody going at it gets a monster reaction from the crowd. Ishikawa works the majority of the match. Baba saves Ishikawa from a piledriver but Super Destroyer comes in and keeps him out of the ring while Brody finishes Ishikawa off with a body slam and the jumping knee drop. Okay tag match. An overall solid set of bouts this week. Next time out we have a Special TV event with the following matches: AWA World Heavyweight and NWA International Title Match: Special Referee: Terry Funk Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Nick Bockwinkel NWA United National Title Match: Ricky Steamboat vs. Genichiro Tenryu NWA International Junior Heavyweight Title Match: Chavo Guerrero © vs. Mighty Inoue |

2/25/1984 Special I'm guessing this is a prime time special or something. 3 big title matches here and our show theme music is the Star Wars disco theme. I'm not even kidding. NWA International Junior Heavyweight Title Match: Chavo Guerrero © d. Mighty Inoue We join this one in progress. This has some really good heat from the crowd. Guerrero gets Inoue in a surfboard and then locks on a figure four leglock. Inoue fights the move for a really long time and even manages to flip it over at one point but Guerrero regains control and Inoue is forced to tap out. The little bit they showed was fun. I'm pretty sure they'll have a rematch pop up here in another episode or two where Inoue wins the belt. NWA United National Title Match: Genichiro Tenryu d. Ricky Steamboat The title belt is vacant here because David Von Erich won the belt and died a few days later. They have a brief ceremony to honor David with the participants before the match kicks off. Lot of mat work here. Honestly, this match has the trappings of a good match but it's just lacking a key element to bring it all together. I'd probably slap *** on this and call it a day. NWA International Champion Jumbo Tsuruta gets interviewed before his main event match with Nick Bockwinkel. Main Event: NWA International Title and AWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Special Referee: Terry Funk Jumbo Tsuruta d. Nick Bockwinkel Funk is sporting a pink ruffled shirt. No seriously... Anyways, this is how you base a match around matwork and make it interesting. Bockwinkel controls the match on the ground and both men are always doing something to keep the action going. Jumbo is always trying to fight his way out and Bockwinkel is always trying to clinch the hold in even more or jawing at Funk. The thing I really love about this match is every single move is a struggle. It feels like every move hit is a small victory for the guy that did the move. Jumbo catches Bockwinkel with a german suplex to win the AWA Title. This is a really good match if you ever want to watch it on Youtube. I'd probably go ****1/4 for this. |
