I've hit a snag, as they added NWA World Championship Wrestling from 1985-1987 to the Network. They're fantastic watches, even if the matches are shorter than current WWE TV matches |

Wow. That's awesome news. I'd love to get back into the late 1987 stuff, when they had a gigantic roster thanks to the UWF deal. I mean, isn't STING's first "NWA" match in there?! My only gripe is that I wish they'd fill out all the "vault" stuff, completely. Nitro, World Class, PTW, ECW, etc. At least SNME is there in its entirety. |

They just added a few shows from Smoky Mountain Wrestling and Mid-South today. Still hoping for old WWF Superstars and Wrestling Challenge shows. |

Also added a couple of AWA shows, too. Not as much as I would like, but it's still something |

I just got finished watching Nitro from 3-8-99 and wow was it a chore to sit through. the first 45 minutes were all angle/ppv hype videos and those spring break vignettes. |

With Riki Rachtman?! If memory serves me well, I think Nitro was 3 hours at that point...and the first hour was usually all hype and pre-recorded segments. Awful stuff, like Hogan and Nash meeting Torrie Wilson at a gun range, then the "Mrs. Robinson" angle that went nowhere. I think around this time was when my streak of weekly Nitro-watching died. My dad had to teach on Monday nights and our little "Nitro Parties" were no more. When we did have one, the show was terrible or boring. The Sting/DDP match is in there, somewhere. I think that holds up fairly well. |

The Main Event was Flair Vs Goldberg which went to a predictable no contest. Is it me or was the majority of Nitro's main event finishes either dq's or no contests? And to see Heenan so bland and totally not into it anymore was sad to see. You can hear it in his voice. One thing I hated about the NWO angle was that they turned Heenan babyface. such a dumb move but hey it's WCW what else is new. |

Heenan wasn't exactly a babyface on Nitro, it's just that he was always (and famously) anti-Hogan, so it made sense that he wasn't down with the nWo. Heenan and Hogan's history goes all the way back to the AWA. So Heenan didn't turn, he was just sticking to his guns. Besides, he took some pride in saying "I toldja' so" about Hogan. Heel commentator Larry Zbyszko was also against the nWo. Even heels like the Four Horsemen were suddenly against the big nWo threat in 1996... but they weren't babyfaces. Pretty sure they had a segment in 1996 where even Jimmy Hart and Big Bubba were talking about how terrible the nWo was. For awhile there, it was basically the entire ROSTER against Hogan, Nash, Hall, DiBiase, Vincent, The Giant and Syxx. When they started adding guys like Marcus Bagwell, IRS, Big Bubba and others around October '96, the nWo began to lose its luster and settled into a traditional heel stable. Yeah, the majority of Nitro main events ended in DQ's and such. I remember it became a running joke amongst the IWC back then. Somebody once mentioned that, due to the frequent run-ins, midcarders like Scott Norton, Konnan or even VINCENT had been involved in more main events than someone like Luger or Sting. |

I know it was Bischoff who wanted Heenan to tone down his humor and just be serious which was a major mistake. Your right though he did stick to his guns on Hogan. It was around 98 where you could tell he didn't want to be there anymore. He'd crack a joke here and here but nothing like how he was in the WWF. The NWO angle should of ended at Starrcade 97 when Sting won the belt. How I would of ended it would be Sting defeat Hogan cleanly by submission. Next night on Nitro Have the whole NWO attack Hogan and disband for good, then Have Hogan come back as the red & yellow sometime in 98. Instead of Bischoff Vs Flair at Starrcade 98 they could of had Hogan vs Bischoff. |

Speaking of Heenan clearly not caring anymore. If anyone's ever seen Superbrawl 1999, you can hear just how "I can't even" Bobby was at that point. He's either drunk or stoned out of his mind and blows easy setups, punchlines, and completely butchers his call of the first match's replay. Its awesomely terrible. Heenan was a big tree smoker. Believe it or not. So, its not outside of the realm of possibility for him to be completely baked and not caring at that point. |

How about Hog Wild 96 when Heenan was loaded out of his mind. You could tell by his slurred speech and such. By the Main Event which was Giant vs Hogan, He talked for the introductions then like the whole match he just gave up and went silent. |

Been going through Nitro from May/June 99 and I got some thoughts... I forgot all about Bischoff returning to the commentary booth for a brief time. Prior to all the NWO stuff, Bischoff wasn't a bad commentator imo. WCW is a Southern based company yet they had a storyline where it was Rap Vs Country and the Country guys were the heels. I can't stand Rap so I was behind the ''West Texas Rednecks''. Overall though what a mess of an angle. The Flair/Piper Stuff was a big waste of time. They fought over who was going to have ''control'' one month and the next month they're allies with Flair as President and Piper as Vice-President. Not to mention the whole Flair going to the '' Mental Ward''. They were really pushing Bagwell around this time as well. But of course WCW screws it up by putting all the focus on the older guys. As much as I love Flair/Piper, them having all the attention in 99 was ridiculous. I really didn't like Randy Savage's gimmick. All them furry coats, glitter etc. was just terrible. Looking back on it, it's a shame that was his last big run in wrestling(I don't count that very brief TNA run) |

Hilariously enough, no one booking WCW at the time understood that wrestling fans might not like Rap. The West Texas Rednecks were over HUGE because of the "I Hate Rap" music video. I think part of it had to do with the idea that WCW was no longer a Southern company, but a national one. Also, Kevin Nash had a lot of pull, and he apparently believes watching BET makes you "hip." But man, to this day there are at least 3 country radio stations to every rap station. Unless you live in a huge metropolis like LA or NY or Chicago. |

I think the (roughly) 30-minute in-ring birthday celebration by Master P and the "No Limit Soldiers" ruined any momentum that stable might've had. It started out as (unmasked) Rey Mysterio and Konnan, with some hip-hop friends. Rey and Konnan were quite over at the time, so they were trying to build off of that. But they gave too much time to Master P. Curt Hennig and Barry Windham hi-jacked DJ Ran's booth, playing "Rap is Crap" after Rey and Konnan won a match. So, Master P and roughly 10 other guys rush the booth, while Hennig and Windham leave. Master P kept screaming "hoo-dee-hoooo" and the whole stable suddenly seemed like a buncha' bullies or jerks. I'll admit, while not a hip-hop fan, I was on-board with the concept of the group, on paper. It was partially spun out of the popularity of the back-to-back Super Champion Broncos, who made the "No Limit Soldier" name popular (yes, that's why the modern Broncos sometimes still do the "Mile High Salute" after touchdowns). I also LOVED Rey, at the time, so I was thrilled to see him be the focus. But then it played out on TV...and it was awful. I think Rey and Konnan both got hurt, which didn't help at all. The Soldiers were left with "B.A" (Brad Armstrong) and a buncha' nobodies in camouflage. Swoll (Randy Thronton), 4x4, Chase Tatum and... some random dolts who nobody had seen before. Yeah, that stable will get over! Heh...2006 "The Marine" John Cena seemed like he would've been a good fit for the Soldiers. |
