I just watched that birthday party for Master P. on the 6-21-99 Nitro. It was in New Orleans of all places and you can tell the crowd just didn't care at all about them as expected in a city like that. Hennig came out(now remember he's the ''heel'' in this storyline) to give him a cowboy hat as a present and they just tore it up and threw cake in his face. They came off like jerks and and the real heels in the feud. And to think they paid Master P. a shit ton of money for the few appearances he made during the Summer of 99. If you ask me it was a really big waste of money and tv time. The following week though they aired the ''Rap Is Crap'' music video and 17 years later it still put's a smile on my face. |

I'm into the fall of 99 here's a few thoughts... The Berlyn gimmick had potential imo. But when fans chant ''Alex Wright'' during your debut, you know it's doomed to fail. Benoit was tearing up the midcard but of course since we're talking WCW, he never got to the main event scene. Vincent joining the West Texas Rednecks as ''Curly Bob''. Random and Pointless And what was the point of Sting's heel turn? talk about unnecessary |

Benoit gets to the main event scene in late '99 and is set-up for a run against Bret Hart (WCW champ and nWo 2000 kingpin). While it was a tournament, he was the final match against Hart (for the title) at "WCW Mayhem" in November. His final WCW match was a PPV main event at "WCW Souled out" in January 2000, when he won the championship. So two PPV matches for the WCW Championship within a little over two months certainly qualifies him as "main event". In between Mayhem and Souled out, he wrestled Jeff Jarrett for the US title. That was the one cool thing about the Vince Russo/Ed Ferrara takeover: Benoit was elevated almost immediately. "Curly Bill" was played off of Vincent's mild resemblance to Cleavon Little in "Blazing Saddles". Yeah, Sting's heel turn was unnecessary. They were trying to mix things up, but it obviously wasn't a great idea. Didn't he end up as the driver of the mysterious "White Hummer"? |

Yeah that's true but Benoit was ready months before that but WCW was putting all the attention on the older guys which was the norm for them. I'm glad though he atleast had a small run in the World Title picture by late 99/00 but I can definitely see why he left for the WWF after Souled Out. I honestly forget who was behind the hummer as I haven't watched these Nitro's since they aired. I believe though they revealed who it was around April 2000. I can't wait to relive Nitro from 2000 as it's the definition of train wreck tv. |

Benoit was probably ready in mid-1998... but there was one huge problem with pushing him, then: Goldberg. |

To be fair, at least they never fed Benoit to Goldberg. Actually, feel free to correct me, but I don't remember ever hearing about or seeing Goldberg beating Benoit, Malenko, or Eddie Guerrero during his streak. Somehow even with well over 170 legit streak matches, they managed to stay away from him. Also, Benoit was set up for a main event run when he tapped out Sid for the belt. Sullivan found out Benoit was jumping to the WWF, though, and told Sid to make sure his foot was under the bottom rope when he was put in the Crossface. Otherwise, it seemed like a Benoit/Sid feud for the title would have been the path going forward. Imagine that. |

Yeah no doubt about that. Same can be said about Jericho. In the fall of 98 they were building a feud between him and Goldberg but in the end they never had a tv or ppv match. Jericho would go off into meaningless feuds after that until he left. Back on to the 99 Nitro's I forgot all about Brian Adams portraying the demon gimmick in the beginning. It looked like he was going to have a feud with Vampiro but they just dropped it. Who can forget the infamous Demon vs Vampiro graveyard match at BATB 2000? Wrestlecrap at it's finest. |

I remember seeing Jericho/Scott Steiner for Steiner's TV Title with both men playing heels after the aborted Jericho/Goldberg feud, and seeing Jericho in that match showing a few great moments of babyface fire before getting cut off. He was double teamed and Bagwell interfered constantly and even threw a soda in Jericho's face. It would have been the perfect match to turn Jericho face, or even start a turn. Have him fight off Steiner, nail Buff with the springboard dropkick and maneuver Steiner into something and cinch up a pin for three. Post match he gets beaten down and put in the Steiner Recliner and *boom* instant face turn and a solid feud moving forward. Instead he just walked out and took a count-out loss. |

Yeah it's a damn shame how they dropped the ball with him in the end. You could tell in those last few months he just gave up and wanted desperately to leave. If i'm not mistaken at Slamboree 99 he was used only in that '' WCW Online Center'' with Madden and them. talk about a demotion. |

Yeah, Benoit was never fed to Goldberg. I wasn't implying that he should've, just that you couldn't have pushed Benoit in the summer of 1998, because everybody wanted Goldberg up there. So for that reason, it would've been a bad time to push Benoit. Besides, in the summer of 1998, Benoit had that pretty cool program with Booker T; culminating in the "best of 7" series and Benoit standing up to the nWo. Honestly, I thought WCW was still rolling strong until the end of 1998. They could never recover from the FPOD and Goldberg's loss. Jericho's "Spinal Tap" skit on Goldberg's usual pre-match antics was hilarious. "Hullo Cleveland"...and then he takes a wrong turn and runs into Wrath. I remember he had some heat-less program with Bobby Duncum, Jr in late 1998. I think the fans and locker room alike knew that he was being mis-used. |

The Jericho/Duncum Jr. feud was just a filler thing over the TV title. They had a match at World War 3 1998 where Jericho blatantly and I blatantly is just like "I can't even" and literally walks Duncum Jr. through every spot and just calls shit in full view of the camera. |

Jericho was misused for sure I refuse to say anything good about Benoit because of what that scumbag did Guerrero Wasn't misused in WCW. He upped his mic skills in WWF and then was pushed to the world title accordingly |

I remember that Jericho/Duncum feud during the dying days of TV Title. when Rick Steiner won it in 99 that was pretty much the end of it. During a Nitro hyping up Road Wild of that year, Goldberg challenged Steiner but never even acknowledged the title. That speaks volumes there |

Late- 1999 Rick Steiner had bad matches with Chris Benoit. That probably says everything that needs to be said about Rick. From all reports, Rick had a big boat, liked hunting, and made good barbecue and that was why Eric Bischoff liked him and held him in such high esteem. Steiner was stiff in the ring, occasionally a little sloppy, and never sold shit for any of the younger guys. He's definitely one of the more unspoken about veterans who really hurt WCW's midcard in the 90's. Rick was pretty much a glass ceiling who would bark at you and wouldn't sell. Oh, and remember his shitty "MMA"-style offense and how he, Scott Steiner, and Tank Abbott had that big "shoot fight" circle jerk feud for a bit? Absolutely awful. |

Oh yeah that was really bad. Tank Abbott being in WCW was a complete waste of time. Although I will say I enjoyed when he beat the shit out of Mark Madden on a Nitro in 2000. Back to the Steiners, how about that Rick vs Sting match at GAB 99? That was really hard to watch. The editing of it with the dogs was just terrible all around. On top of that they didn't even show the pin. They just cut to the announcers who were trying to sell it as this serious situation which makes it even more embarrassing. then they cut to the Steiners saying WCW was to scared to show it or something along those lines. When WCW went into the abyss, they never looked back. Just one bad angle after another. |
