Not to be morbid, but at least he lived a full life. I remember Fuji for three things: (1) managing and (2) turning on Demolition and (3) his run as Yokozuna's manager. His in-ring career was pretty much done before I was born, and his greatest fame to the "Rock n' Wrestling" era was also before my time, his work in those ridiculous sketches with Don Muraco, like Fuji Vice and Fuji General. I never really liked him much as a performer, but as a manager, he had a distinct look, with the black suit, cane, and bowler hat (or maybe it's a derby, I don't know headwear well). After dumping Demolition in favor of the Powers of Pain, he just kind of hung around. Managed both versions of the Orient Express. Reformed his alliance with the expanded version of Demolition, and was the mouthpiece for the Berzerker. After Yokozuna's face turn, it seemed inevitable that Fuji's career was done, and sure enough, outside of a couple of appearances, Fuji's career ended in the Spring of 1996. He didn't appear again until the Hall of Fame induction in the mid 00's, and looked in poor health there. I'm honestly shocked he made it this long just going by his physical appearance a decade ago. In recent years, stories of his bizarre pranks/ribs have painted him in a different picture, but wrestlers doing fucked up things in the 70's and 80's is hardly new stuff. |
