The title says it all. How much Dev time was wasted to, 1. Re-skin a couple of hats (in MS Paint) 2. Rename a couple of Pie-rats from 3 Barrel 3. Rehash some map tiles to make a new area 4. Reuse the Mabar code to drive it 5. Improve the Auto-Exploit Ban Stick to ban everyone who ever played DDO when someone misclicks in the timed event (OK 5 is just divination based on past Turbine performance) 6. Ban some spells cause its too difficult to adjust the event to cope? 7. Cause endless agro by once again allowing kill thieving? So when do we get actual content? I take it your not too stoked for the birthday event then ![]() How much time? Probably not all that much compared to the work going on for update 9 which is likely why its got a fair bit of recycled content instead of brand new art. We get new content in update 9. When is update 9? Probably when it passes testing. And after that update 10 and 11 etc... which are probably also being worked on as I type. DDO has a pretty long dev cycle on updates and Turbine usually has 3 or so in the pipeline at any given time. Also, re-using materials is't always bad, so long as new elements are added to the mix. For me, the only thing that makes this not new content is that its only in game some of the time. But for most other purposes its content... stuff to do, stuff to get. What spells are banned by the way? I'm not sure what you are referring to there. Anyhow, I know these events don't appeal to everyone but I rather like them in limited doses. One of the things that makes DDO a good game is it has a lot of different types of things to do but that always means not everyone will like all the elements it offers. Hopefully mod 9 will be more to your liking. ![]() |

Over all I like the event. I don't mind the bits that felt recycled. In fact some people were really loving the through back. And were telling stories about the old days to some of the newer players in my group. There are a few small things that I don't like. 1, It seemed whoever first agroed the mobs while farming for maps was the person/party that earned any thing for the kill. Even if all they did was agro and run by. It would be nice to know drops might go to any one that aided in the kill. 2, I know a lot of my runs involved group members map farming with guy A, then switching to guy B just before we got ready to enter the cove. 3, Some of the red names just had stupid amounts of HP. 4, Lastly it felt watching the kobolds that some times they got hung up for no real reason. Running from one torch to the next and back again. Those first few torches around that ramp really caused some problems from time to time. But we were always was able to get our 100, and at least some over. Once I thought we were about to get the 200 extra but we lost production at some point. Those negatives said a few positives. It was fast to get the cove open. Some times waiting for the Dragon to open up took hours. And often one guy would check out the count for everyone else that was running other content for that last blast of turnings. There is a nice window for running the cove. If you had to go afk when the map count was low. Odds are good that you will make it in at least one run. And groups that are on the ball, can get two. That was really nice. The items look nice, and will take more then an hour to farm the top end stuff. Oh and did any of you get any of those treasure maps? That was a nice little perk. Oh and since it is a public area, your Pendent of Time works while map farming, just a little tip from the Defense Guild. |

I was excited until i saw that my characters that have been here since pre-order and the first week get the same hat as the character i made last month. I think that part is lame. |

More miffed that it could have been better.
Its a public area, so some spells don't work.
It seems only damage counts for who gets what. Support classes in parties get a much lower total of coins. Distributing the loot evenly to party members might be better. Also the @$#!ing Egg hunt is back in the market. Welcome to 'haste me' tells from random players (if you even look like a caster) Edited by Dustwalker, Feb 25 2011, 07:47 AM.

I played as a dps roll, an caster roll and a support roll out in the public area. And To tell you the truth the drop rate is just not great. Maybe that will change now that the 400 is caped and full Pale master. But once you get into the cove, the gem drops are fairly high. And cashing in a few diamonds is worth hours of hunting coins at the island. Faster your party clears mobs the more gems you will farm. And nothing helps dps more then a good support player. |

Of course all this pales compared to the insane amounts of plat being gathered by people selling the dowsing rods in the pawn shop in Atraxia. |

Ahh, well we are on the same page for that. I'd like more spells for public areas, especially wall/BB. Summons I can live without. I though the worst part of the event was the bugged loot distribution in the rest, but in the end that didn't matter much. The egg hunt I don't much care for either, which is odd because I like jumping on stuff quite a bit, I guess I just like my jumping free form. I don't mind that they do it, I just ignore it, but it is my least favorite of their "special" things.Having done the b-day action... I loved it. Really it was a ton of fun for a week or so and I avoided over doing it and did some traditional XP questing as well. The cove is easily one of my favorite quests in game and I love that I can do it at different levels. Edited by sigtrent, Mar 3 2011, 02:45 PM.

It is actually quite different in so many ways. 1) the crafting system is very different, for starters, you can buy tier 1 of any item of any level right off the bat, no need to buy the lowest level and build it up. It also allowed you to pick which abilities you wanted to put on your hat (this is probably a big hint at what is to come, see Fernando's letter). 2) The second part of the event kept the same party together in the same instance. 3) The second part of the event had a really awesome tech, which let you pick what level you wanted to do the quest on. Again another huge hint at what is to come, so again please see Fernando's letter. 4) The second part of the Event, was unlike anything they have ever done with a quest before.
What quest and area doesn't do that in any game. There are only so may tile sets available, and it takes a lot of time to develop new ones. SO YES, they will be reused a lot AND IT IS CALLED GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICES!
Some spells were not banned. Smuggler's Rest IS A PUBLIC INSTANCE! Persistant AOE spells are not allowed in Public areas. And no, Firewall and Blade Barrier are not the end all, be all of spell selection. This was actual content testing on a huge scale. If the new tech that they introduced with this event had failed, then some really cool stuff that Fernado hinted at in his letter would a lot farther off than it probably is. And while I would have loved to have seen some new quests, spells, PrEs and the like added, I'm ok with is for the 5th Brithday event content release. hell, I'm not ok with it I'm delighted with it. It was a huge throw back to the games initial release and successfully laid the ground work for things I'm immensely excited for in the future. This event was no small undertaking for the Developers. This is especially true considering how much work/productivity they have lost this winter due ot the incredibly harsh winter Massachusetts has faced this year. Sohats off to the Developers and everyone at Turbine for not only a jobwell done, for the time and dedication to make this celebration a huge success and a ton of fun. |
