Building an AC-based tank - what class?

So, I've been thinking of TRing my bard as an AC-based intimitank at some point, and wondering what class I'm best to use for it. The obvious choices are fighter or paladin, but which to go? Or might a multiclass build work best? Each obviously has its own advantages and disadvantages, so - what do you think? What class or class mix should I be looking at, and why? Answers on a postcard...

I know Fopo ( @burrbaby on twitter) has a fighter/monk with a ranger past life and he has been tanking many raids. I understand until cap most of his gear was not too special... But now at cap he is looking for/ gathered a few epics.

I also think next month or so when it is TR time for me again he will be TRing in to a Helf.

I've been thingking of doign something similar for a while. I have a weak DPS character that has a bunch of Tank gear. From what I've seen the biggest factor for your "tank build" is how you want to play your tank.

I'll have to check again on what "build style" is best for what type of play. These are the popular "build types" I am considering.

18 Fighter/2 Monk
18 Fighter/2 Rogue <--(AkA. Rock Candy)
18 Paladin/2 Monk
12 Fighter/8 Monk <--(AkA. God Hand)

I was thinking *maybe* 18 monk, 2 fighter. It would have much better saves, if you could get the intimidate up and go dwarf/WF you would have good health survival.

I would wonder what the final intimidate is, if not 18 fighter/2 monk. Evasion is huge.

Edit: My idea came from the official forum here: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=204862

There was a suggestion of a 12/6/2 build. I like monks because their overall survival. But if you are die hard s&b, high ac then nothing will beat a fighter.

I haven't put much time into the idea, but I've been thinking about 12 Monk/8 Fighter. You can go dark path for ToD and Water Stride, you get Abundant Step and Evasion, and(I think) Power Surge from Kensi(now that I'm posting this it sounds like a DPS build.....may not fit here....), you can probably get decent Threat generation of you go Warforged.

I think it would be able to get a decent Intim and AC depending on how it's built, and may be able to fill many rolls in different raids. I'll have to work arround with the character planner for a bit.

There aren't any end caps that are great for tanking so there isn't much reason not to multiclass a tank.

For Intim you can got Fighter, Paladin, or Monk (with one of the others to get intim as a class skill) Shintao grants intim bonuses as does way of the badger so it has all the right tools.

I do like fighter a lot for the bountiful feats which lets you make a tank that can switch gears and go DPS pretty easily. Fighter 12 is a good start, using defender. From there you can bring in monk for evasion and wis with no armor, or you can go paladin for better saves, or both.

I guess further to my initial post I should mention that I'm still f2p, so I don't have access to monk, wf or halves.

In that case I think the best bet for you would be one of the following:

Pure Fighter
Pure Paladin
18 Fighter/2 Rogue
18 Paladin/2 Rogue

Add the 2 Rogue splash if you're looking for evasion, add paladin to that for a usefull reflex save. I like Defender of Siberys over Stalwart Defender cause it has the ability to get a much higher healing amp(I beleive it gets a +200% amp clickie at lvl18, lasts one minute I think).

But both DoS and SD have the capability of focusing in Threat Generation, AC, and Intimidate. LIke Sig said, Fighter has better flexability to be able to switch between DPS or Tank given the situation, not to mention the excessive feats.

So the choice between Fighter or Paladin is mainly a preferance on play style rather than which is better for the given job, because they are both equally suitable to be AC-Intim Tanks.

Fighter:
Flexability to switch between DPS and Tank, More Feats...

Paladin:
Self-Healing, Healing Amp, Self-Buffing...

Well Nim, if we are rating them I'd probably go:

Pure Fighter (for extremly high intim, s&b) - hardcore AC, blocking, Intim

18/2 Monk OR Pure paladin - look at the all the pro's and con's, and then it comes down to preference

12/6/2 Paladin, monk, rogue

18/2 Fighter OR Paladin 18, Rogue 2

I agree...

I wasn't trying to rate them in any order though. Just trying to put my opinion of the best options available to Entimix. As he previously stated that he is F2P and doesn't have Monk available, so I excluded the monk variants.

Yeah, I just saw that. I believe monk is a class that should be unlocked...but without it I still stick to my guns.

S&B fighter is the nastiest type of tank.
