@WaltzIt - deal - especially easy for me, since I have no idea of the story. If it's like Demons souls, the story will probably be adequate if thin, and take a backseat to the gameplay itself.

@Tundra - I bought Demons Souls used for like $18 after having read all of the reviews and comments from people. Figured I wouldn't drop 'new game' money on it in case it ticked me off too much, but at $18 I could take a flyer on it and see what I thought. Even the guy working at Gamestop made a comment about how tough it was.

I played it, and really ate it up. Sure, I died some, but I logged a TON of time into the game. Hated some of the cheap deaths along the way, but got about 2/3 of the way through it. It was about the halfway point I was starting to get frustrated though. Fighting 2 bosses at once (the gargoyle guys), having black phantoms invading my area and killing me when I was nearly done with the zone a few times, getting knocked off of ledges from enemies that I couldn't see until I came around the corner - those were tough. Finally, and I don't recall what area I was in, but I got to a zone where even though I had spent at least 100 hrs on the game getting pretty much the best stats and armor I could to that point, I was getting 1 and 2 shotted from enemies hiding around corners that you had to know were there before hand or you'd die.

That, coupled with how easily you lost your souls/experience, finally did me in (and led to the um, forcefully slid controller - my son still doesn't let me live that one down). I think if you could keep your souls it wouldn't have bothered me so much, but I remember having lost hundreds of thousands of souls in a 2 day span to that area, just unable to progress well, and then losing souls. I finally beat that level, but by then I was so fed up with it, I quit playing - and I'm someone who usually beats the games he plays.

There was definitely an old-school vibe to it. It reminded me of the days I spent on older consoles trying to beat Ghosts and Goblins or beating Contra in a life - but I was spending more time annoyed than having fun, despite how cool that sense of discovery and victory was.

I loved the graphics, the music, the sound - the basic layout was cool, and the first half of the game I blew through pretty quickly, but that sense of "I just wasted the last two days playing this, because I just lost all of my souls again for the nTh time" just sort of did the game in for me.

Hmm, turned out to be a long post than intended, but there that is.

As for your off-topic: I have not picked that game up yet, but I plan to. I never played Ico or SotC and want to, so this seems the perfect excuse to do so sooner than later.

This is probably spoilers filled if you watch it, but IGN has a 24 hour livestream of Dark Souls being played here:

I massively recommend this, especially since it's under $10: http://www.digitallydownloaded.net/2011/09...ury-hg-ps3.html

It's a superb game. Really superb.

Was just reading that review this morning. Looks good - I just beat Heroes of Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes for my PS3 last night, got all of the trophies unlocked. did not get enough sleep, but good game if you like rpg/puzzle hybrids.

Watching that Dark Souls livestream a bit last night, watching a fight w/ a huge knight right now - looks good. Looks frustrating. Keep in mind, it's being played by a guy who's already beaten the game, and another guy who's writing their IGN guide for it. At hour 16, their death count is 40, boss kill count is 8, and they estimate that they are about 1/3 of the way through the game.

Dark Souls:

So I watched several hours of the Dark Souls 24 hour feed on IGN. Keep in mind, that 1 or 2 of these reviewers had already beaten the game and knew their way through it. By the end, they had died over 60 times, beaten 9 of the roughly 20+ bosses, and spent more than 2 of those hours on the same pair of bosses. Interesting quote from the review for those who are wondering about the question, is it harder than Demon Souls:

-----

There are times, though, when Dark Souls crosses the line from thrillingly challenging to straightforwardly sadistic. There are frog-like sewer-dwelling creatures that can Curse you with their attacks, instantly reducing your health bar to half its former size; the only way to get cured is to visit a healer hidden deep within a dangerous ghost-populated area that's a long, long journey away (or to buy an item from a vendor, if you've got enough souls).

Making your way through Dark Souls' death-trap world with half a health bar is hard enough, but the Curse effect stacks – so if you get caught again, you'll be down to a quarter of a health bar. A third time, you'll be down to an eighth. I know one Dark Souls player who lost something like 10 hours trying to make it to a healer when everything in the world could kill him with one hit. There's punishing, and then there's unfair.

One of the mid-game bosses, meanwhile, emits corrosive bile that swiftly degrades your equipment if you get stuck in its flow, potentially leaving you standing naked in front of a hideous dragon with a broken sword. There's no way to repair weapons and armor once they've been completely destroyed, so it's possible to lose all your best gear in this battle. Similarly, there are areas in the mid-section of the game where the main challenge isn't overcoming the skinless poisonous demons that live there, but struggling not to get knocked off narrow, precarious ledges by their attacks.

<and later>

I simply can't unreservedly recommend that you buy it. It's not a game that you play to relax. It doesn't care in the slightest about whether you're enjoying yourself, and it doesn't give a fig for your notions of entertainment or your mental well-being. If you just play games for fun, this isn't for you, and no amount of insistence on my part is going to change that.

-------
That said, the reviewer gave it a 9 out of 10, and the room of players during the 24 hour feed seemed like they were having a good time - most of the time - though they were quite frustrated at times as well. This pretty much reinforces my notion of it - something I'll play on the cheap in several months when I can find it discounted, but not something I'll be buying right now as I eye games like White Knight 2, Halo Anniversary and Skyrim. What are your thoughts?

Today I had purchased myself 4 games. 2 of those games I had bought blindly; meaning I bought the games while knowing nothing about them. These blind purchases were BlazBlue: Continuum Shift and Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight. I haven't tried these games yet.

I also bought Demon's Souls and Transformers: War for Cybertron. Both seem enjoyable so far.

Oh lawdy. This Mobile Suit game is terribad so far. The controls make it seem like it was going to be a tank combat game, but the developers decided halfway to make it into a mecha game. The framerate seems to halve whenever there is another mobile suit on screen. There may be a silver lining to all this so I will continue playing.

Haven't played Mobile Suit - recently picked up Blazblue myself, but haven't had a chance to play it yet. Demon's Souls and Transformers were both very cool in my opinion, though Demon Souls is one of the few games to make me cry uncle and give up before beating it, once I hit about the 2/3 mark. I found the first half pretty easy, but after that? not so much so. :)

Ouch :(

Have you considered the Gundam Warriors game? I enjoyed that one, though I'm not the biggest Gundam fan.

Are you referring to that Dynasty Warriors game? I've played that one before and liked it. I think I'll buy that some time.

Yeah, sorry, the proper title is Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3 (for the newest in the series).

I thought that that was a lot of fun, and as an outsider to the Gundam franchise, there seemed to be a lot of good quality fan service in the game.

It'll tide you over until Warriors: One Piece. That game should be nuts fun :D

Target in Sight...I really wanted to play that game, yet I keep hearing horrible things about it. I'll probably get it anyways, but still...

Iobham, have you played any of the PS2 Gundam games? I saw Encounters in Space and Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam at GS, which I now have to shop at, and I was wondering if maybe you had played either of them, or if not, maybe you could point me in the direction of a good one?

Let me know what you think. I liked the first game, but got ticked at it too. One of my co-workers and 2 of my online friends have picked it up, but it's one of those titles I prolly won't pick up right away, but may break down and get it once it's a bit cheaper.

So, after 6 hours? To use a classic Friends reference, I'm going to stick this game in the freezer.

I wish I could help you with that, but I haven't owned a PS2... I suppose you could just search gundam on metacritic or something to get a general idea of what is mostly liked or not.

Any more specifics on why you feel that way? hehe.

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are the only two games where I've had to stop and take a deep breath before I go and explore somewhere. They're intimidating.

I'm playing through the game with two different characters (one for review, ie I'm trying to power through the main game, the other for me, picking up trophies and exploring more). And even when I know what's around the corner, I'm still shaking in my boots.

THAT SAID, now I'm a few bosses in with one of those characters, I think this game is easier than Demon's Souls. Much easier, if I'm being honest. From Software ran out of surprises and tricks in the first game, and now this is just a polished rehash of the original game. It's better, but I'm not suffering random deaths this time.

Are you sure you can't pen it down to you being slightly better at this sort of game after having finished Demon's Souls?

Entirely possible, yes, I agree. I am constantly shocked by the progress I am able to make in this game, though.

I assume that someone who didn't agonize for hour after hour on Demon's souls would still struggle plenty ;)
