Cruel and Unusual Cartographer
|
Decided to try a different technique this time. I think it looks nicer, but it will probably be more confusing to play because the mountains aren't anything like as clear. I've also been learning about Voronoi diagrams, which makes things a whole lot easier. As requested after the last one, it's smaller, and wraparound. Still quite a lot of water, but the water effects in this one were pretty, so I couldn't help myself ![]() Edit: Now updated with non-crappy mountains Map here. Preview:

Crap, I knew I forgot something ![]() 144 provinces - 105 land, 32 in the big ocean, and 7 in various lakes. I figured probably 8-12 players. |

Looks good, but like you say the mountains aren't very distinct,... also seems like there would be a lack of choke points. |

Really nice, and the water effects are great. The only thing non-glowing feedback I'd give is, possibly because of the way the shading is, the shallow water keeps on looking, to my eye, like it is raising above the water, like a glacial mountain or something, rather than getting lower. Not anything that ruins the appeal of the map, but a minor thing that, at least for me, tricks the eye in a possibly unintended way. (Particularly noticeable in the bay in the NW quadrant.) But, I mean, again, that's tiny, and I really like the style. Very subtle and nice to look at. |

Looks pretty nice, and as a wraparound it will likely find a bit of usage. Although I just tried to download it, and the filedropper site isn't having any of it, and just sends me on an infinite loop back to the download page (with no error message) when I try to grab it (which I tend to find often happens when download sites are struggling with capacity) But it does seem very happy and enthusiastic for me to create a free account, which I am really tempted to do, but sadly Gandalf has only very recently used up my shit tolerance quota for the month, so I'll have to wait a while now for all the exciting opportunities in life that a free filedropper account would present me with (I'll try again to download it later) |

That was fast! I think my feedback on this one would be "beautiful but blotchy". It kind of looks like there are clouds overhead and some patches of the map are in sunlight, while others are in shadow. I guess you used some kind of filter which blotchified the map to make it look less uniform, but I'm not sure about the end result. Also a bit worried about choke points, like Sombre said. It would be great if you could harden up the mountains in some places, and ideally have them running along province borders and preventing movement between the provinces they separate. But it is a really attractive new graphical style for maps. I think this one will definitely see some use. |

I've managed to get the file now and checked it out. The map seems pretty good, although I will echo the calls that the mountain provinces are hard to pick out from the image file alone. Also, the following is a potential* list of missing province connections that I found on a quick check. 6-9 128-116 137-125 168-155 9-13 21-45 134-148 144-140 51-60 93-91 * I say potential, as they are only missing connections in the strict sense that they are bordering provinces that suggest a connection from the image file, but might not be meant to be connected for some other reason. |

OK, I think I'm going to spend a while reworking this one. I want to get rid of the really tiny borders, and see if I can do something to fix the mountains. Blotchiness you're probably stuck with ![]() edit: Didn't take that long after all. Preview:

Ooh, that looks very nice. Do the mountains affect the province connections? |

Yep, the mountains block travel - most of them, anyway. it's still a little ambiguous in places, but I can live with that. Turns out I screwed up the tutorial I was following, and missed the part where it says "delete most of your mountains or your map will look like shit". Oops. I really like the result now, and I'll probably use this style again in the future. Next one is going to be very different though. This version has 132 land provinces, 32 sea and 7 lake. The numbers above were wrong - I though I started with a 12x12 grid, but it must have been 13x13. Download. |

Hmm. I said this looks nice. Then I saw it in game. It's gorgeous! Really eye-pleasing in-game. Great work. I don't know 'bout all these other guys here, but if you want to do any of those huge maps, I'd be using it. I like those epic SP or friendly MP games. |

Link not working for me either. I really want this map! Could you pretty please make it available in some other way? |
