Hi,

I'm trying Dominions 3 because it was heavily recommended to me and now I'm trying to get into a MP game after a couple of singleplayer matches.

I got pointed to this forums and every thread is just buttloads of overwhelming info, I don't know where to start and there's no stickies explaining anything.

HALP!

PS: Just to come clean, I can't afford the real game yet so if someone can point me some retailer that's not 50$ or a 10-days download I'd be grateful -.-

Crapnel is the only legal method to acquire a new copy, and they're rather troglodyte when it comes to pricing. If you can pick up a used copy on Amazon or w/e then it should be cheaper, but otherwise you're pretty SOL.

Shrapnel does at least have very frequent sales, there should be at least one more sale before the end of the year.

As for information, it would help if we knew what you were looking for. The shrapnel forums have some stickies that are helpful for new players, and the wiki is an excellent resource. If you have something specific in mind that you need answers about, feel free to ask.

Thanks, I'll wait 'til I get a job or something, because eBay is not to be trusted.

I don't have doubts per-se, I just want to try to get into a game but most threads here are full of acronyms and jargon and I don't quite understand much, or feel like I'm playing the big leagues so I just close the tab :P Just a bit of "how this forum works".

About the game itself I don't have many doubts and I know where to look up.

Ebay really isn't that bad at all. Just make sure to check the sellers reviews before buying or bidding on something.

Shrapel sales are bullshit. A game of the age and niche of Dom3 should be 10-20 euros (or equal amount of usd or a few pounds less) at most. The Shrapnel price is imo high for even fresh release of what's essentially an indie game.

That said I'd claim the game is worth even the full Shrapnel price for many of the people in this forum.

I'll manage, but still, someone can please explain "how the forum works".

I mean, I go and jump in any thread I can get into, I kind-of-try-to understand what the game is about...install related mods (there's this one everyone has? TBP?) and then how do you PBEM?

how the forum works? like click on a thread with an interesting title and read it? the forum has sections, mods, multiplayer, maps, etc, so whatever aspect you are interested in has a section.

if you want to see how to play a certain nation, i suggest you read some guides. there are a few here, such as in my signature, more on the wiki, and a ton on crapnel, the mod most people here use is CBM, you can find it in the mod subforum.

PBEM is played through llamaserver (llamaserver.net is the webpage) but basically llamabeast has set up an excellent server for people to use for free, which automatically receives and processes turns then sends them out to players email.

Dominions 3 is one of those games where you should actually read the manual through. If I can't afford or want to pay for a game I'll pirate it, don't know how you feel about that though. But if were you I'd pirate dominions now and buy it later. Don't mention that on shrapnel though, it'll get you banned.

Some random stuff:

PBEM, as mentioned above is play by email. And it's really the dominating method used here. It works such that you get your turn file sent in an email, manually put it in your savegame folder, do your turn, and send the 2h file back to the server. Almost all games use llamaserver.net, made by llamabeast, which is very very good.

Communication and diplomacy between players is typically done via the game thread in combination with the #dominions irc channel on gamesurge. Or sometimes by PM or email, but this forum has a sucky pm system so that's more common on shrapnel. The ingame messaging system sucks in a number of ways, mainly because you have to wait for turns to respond, then another turn for the answer and so on, so is seldom used.

If you're a new player and want's coaching, my best advice is to fire up the irc channel while playing. You'll get immediate answers to any question there, along with cusswords and glee, but it's all in good spirit.

The strategy index on shrapnel contains a lot of great nation guides, even if some are outdated you'll learn a lot by reading them.

Questions about playing the game are better asked here than on shrapnel, because we are much better players. :P And that is done in the lords of war section.

The cesspit is for talking general bullshit, typically it's Maerlande ranting about shrapnel and newbies on shrapnel. Do not let yourself be offended by Maerlande.

The main mod to get into is the CBM mod, almost all MP games use it. This mod changes the game to make more strategies viable, remove unnecessary micromanagement and broken mechanics, and balance nations.

SC means supercombattant, a unit powerful enough to take on armies and provinces by itself. SC builds are a constant theme of discussion. Typically you learn which chassis to outfit with synergising magic items. Very important in endgame. SC can also refer to a type of physically powerful god that can expand by itself.

Rainbow means a pretender with lots, but low, magic paths. Typically one of the human pretenders. Used for site searching, researching and breaking into paths the nation does not have. The last being very crucial in MP.

A "thug" is a step down from SC. Typically a lower summon with magic items or an especially tough national commander with items. thugs are crucial in MP midgame for raiding undefended provinces.

There is a point in the MP game where normal troops become useless compared to summons and elite units. Unless you can leverage some synergy with army buffs and battle magic. There is no way you can prevail with just normal troops.

Encumbrance and fatigue is extremely important to understand and keep track of in this game. A very large percent of battles where newbies can't understand why they lost the answer is because of fatigue. Leveraging fatigue increasing effects can kill entire armies when used in conjuction with 0 encumbrance units like undead. Thugs and SC:s needs to be kept at 0 fatigue to survive, generally speaking.

etc etc...

You'll catch up, just ask anything you wonder about.

This sentence is a logical fallacy.

Ain't no secret to these forums, just common sense.

I guess the only confusing part is really the way multiplayer games work. You announce you want to make one, people say they'll join, then you make it and you all play in it over the course of weeks/months. That's what 99% of the threads in the MP forum are - games.

There's quite a heavy modification bias on this forum because I made it primarily as a place to set up my own mods. But really you could play dom3 forever without ever using any mods. They are just the cherry on top.
I mod for free and fun. But if you want to tip me for work I've done, you can do so through PayPal to rabbitoflegend@gmail.com
