I ran across a nice map making site, Cartographers Guild. Started fiddling around with GIMP and mapmaking yesterday and this is my very first map! There are no deserts or swamps on the map since I still haven't figured out how to make them look nice-ish. The map has 55 provinces (51+4). Suitable for a 4-5 game. I'll most likely be making new maps soon. So if you like these kind of maps please let me know what size map I should make new, 8-12 I guess, 100-150 provinces? Map link down bellow; Green Haven

Nice! I was planning to make a "ring map" myself. If I was to improve anything regarding the look of your map, I'd tone down the slightly garish tone of the green somewhat. (and perhaps the water's tone a bit too) I am not sure what you can do with GIMP, as I only use Photoshop and Illustrator, but maybe you could use a blending layer on top of the whole map to slightly tone it. I have not tested the map in game, but it seems nice for a 3-4 player game. |

Seconding deathjester. Looks interesting. It's a matter of preferences of course, but I'd also go for a more yellow-brownish green for the grass and somewhat desaturated water. I like the little sites you put in and the wesnothish ships at the ports. What would be nice would be some way to make the mountains appear less apruptly and something that made the riverbanks more defined. Maybe just a darker color along the banks. |

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The mountains are actually quite terrible and clip art-y, at least to me. Didn't know how to make them in GIMP when I started on this map, but now I do. Anyway, I've been making another map for a while now. Sparsely have time now to work on it atm, so it will be a while before I'm done, but as soon as I'm done with it I'll try to fix this one. It may look nice(ish), but it's lacking swamps, wastelands and proper mountains. In case anyone is interested I'm making a team game map with a light vs dark, death vs life theme. The south side of the map will be a barren wasteland; decaying land, trees, etc, and the north will be quite the opposite of course. There will also be a small central in between area probably. I plan to organize a game on it once I'm done. |
